That she actually complimented his eyes probably means she is interested (at least in a politeness/courtesy sense) enough to make a "bland and generic compliment."

Find things you like about yourself. Work on those things, make them more solid, more pronounced.

Find things you don't like about yourself, and find ways to change them.

Insecure about your appearance? Get some new clothes, got to a gym. If you're low on cash, go to a thrift store a couple times a week, you'll probably find a gem or two per trip.. and start running, do pushups, situps, find people to work out with.

Insecure about how you interact with people? Go socialize more, even if it's painful at first, you'll warm up to it. It'll get easier.

There's no magic fix.
