Can someone choose to be homosexual?
i have spurred a debate in my philosphy class:
Can somebody wake up one morning and be like, alright, I've had it. I'm gonna be gay for now on.
Some people say, no way its genetics. Others think everybody is subconsciously bisexual, though most have the sexual preference of the opposite sex
Personally, I believe it can be done. I've been thinking about it a lot lately because after the last couple mental breakdowns I've had due to guys, I've basically kind of had it with them all. I want so badly to not be attracted to guys, though that could never happen. However, maybe if I open my mind to the world of women, I could find some love there that I had never even imagined?
what do you guys think

Re: Can someone choose to be homosexual?
There shouldn't even be a debate. You can't choose your sexual preference any more than you can choose your eye colour. Did you choose to be a heterosexual? No.
Although I think of sexuality of more of a spectrum rather than black and white gay or straight. Most people are on the heterosexual end of the spectrum, some are on the homosexual end, and a small amount fall inbetween and would be considered bisexual. The reason you feel like you can chose to love women is because of the spectrum; you're on the heterosexual end, but a little further in, so you are open to the thought of being with a woman.

Re: Can someone choose to be homosexual?
People can be culturally conditioned to bisexuality, yet the likelihood of a decidedly straight person being able to change their sexual orientation through force of will seems almost impossible.
You are right though, most people are born with the potential towards some sort of bisexuality, but most people still heavily lean towards one side, and society then conditions them the rest of the way to be exclusively heterosexual or homosexual.
In short though, if you are straight, you are going to be trying to override a great deal of hormones and a lifetime of cultural conditioning, and I doubt you're up for the job.

Re: Can someone choose to be homosexual?
I believe the current idea is that most people aren't in fact clearly on one extreme side, but most people are towards hetero side. Obviously this would vary greatly based on location/culture/etc.
Sure, I think you could wake up one day and decide to do a lot of gay things, but if you weren't really enjoying it you'd just be forcing yourself to do it and you wouldn't really be gay. Though you could probably learn to like it, or something. Meh.

Re: Can someone choose to be homosexual?
You can choose which gender you want to have sex with, obviously. But you usually (I can't think of an example where it's happened, but I'm sure it has)can't choose who or what gender you're attracted to.
