about god
noone can prove a god exists
noone can prove a god doesnt exist
why cant some of us accept this simple fact: we dont, and never will know the answers. ever
why cant we just accept this simple truth and live in peace?

Re: about god
...because that'd just be stupid? Its like that really hot girl at your school. You've never seen her naked (and probably never will) but, you don't just look at her and say "wow shes beautiful". No, you wonder about how nice her tits must feel and what that fabulous ass can do. Humans are never content with not knowing. I guess only ignorant people are content with leaving the unknown exactly that. Ignorance is bliss.

Re: about god
It is just irrational to take a stance of ignorance when there is absolutely no reason to believe 'x'. Again, as I have to repeat over and over, a supernatural entity is non-falsifiable. Stating that there is no proof that god does NOT exist is just blatantly inane. How could there possibly be evidence that something does NOT exist, other than pointing out that there is no instance of such a being in existence?
The theist's premise of god's existence is that it is supernatural. In this, they are assuming the existence of some supernatural plane of existence. The onus is on them, for they believe in this off-the-wall plane of existence, not the atheist.
The agnostic's problem is in thinking we can possibly produce evidence of the NON-EXISTENCE of a being and therefore, the burden of proof is equally on the atheist's shoulders.

Humans strive to understand, to know, which is why it is hard to accept that we cannot. In fact, you will never know anything more then you already do.
We don't live in peace because to justify our own beliefs as being truth we feel that other, somewhat different beliefs, must be false. Some feel that one of the 'truths' must be destroyed, that they cannot both be true, and out of fear cling on to their own while attacking the others.

That kind of dangerous thinking is what leads to blissful ignorance.
I'll pass on the bliss and take learning FTW.

Theists will not live in peace as long as there are rational human beings in the world. As long as people say:
"Where is God?"
"Don't think this is real"
"There is not a single itty bitty shred of evidence for God so how can you assume he exists?"
And finally...."Okay so you think he exists...why do you want that to affect me a non-believer?"
As soon as the antiquitated, unprovable, illogical, fantasies of un-educated tribal people who lived thousands of years ago CEASES affecting me, will be the very moment I stop laughing in the face of the die hard Xtians.
We (atheists) are not the crazy ones.

god does not equal an infinite and unstoppable fountain of answers and immutable truths! Most religious adherents and believers are completely irrational, devoid of the capacity to think original thoughts, in fact some are outright lunatics. And most can't seem to make sense out of the simplest ideas.

I think he may be saying that we are only aware of what we know during the present, and seeing as all time periods are the present we can never know anything more than we do at that moment in time, whether we strive for ignorance OR learning.
Of course, he may not, but I prefer my interpretation :P

Re: about god

Right, how can you make any logical argument for or against the existence of something that can both exist and not exist simultaneously?
I'm also certain that Obbe's idea of God is much different than the Christian God. Which is I think what a lot of us have in mind in these discussions.

What you're describing there is the human race in general. No, i'm correctly describing the stereotypical behavior, the "out of sight out of mind" self-induced ignorance and the generally accepted "macho" attitudes of religious fanatics, and their flock of "do no harm" believers. Most of whom are only interested in advancing their own greed, selfishness and materialism, by hook or by crook, but usually by hiding behind the outward appearances of their chosen religion. What you are doing is playing the "poor me, i'm only human" card, ignoring what damage organized religions and its blinkered adherents can and do cause.

You DON'T NEED an argument against something that is non-falsifiable and has no evidence!

The ONLY logical argument is this: Prove it.
Theists assert god exists and have no proof. Now I am NOT saying there isn't a God I am simply saying without proof you have fantasy.
Obbe by the way thinks you are an illusion. That everything is an illusion except the self thus making the self god. The only thing known to be true is the self. I am sure he would love to stroke out some more shit to add to that but essentially that is the SIMPLISTIC view of Obbe.

Unless they have proof which cannot be shared, or an understanding of God which isn't a singular existence within perceived reality, but all thats within you and without you, and thus cannot be demonstrated.
SIMPLISTIC

Well, we'll agree to disagree then. I think that the majority of human people are , only interested in advancing their own greed, selfishness and materialism, by hook or by crook. Regardless of beliefs. I'd then state that seeing as the majority of world religons , and most of the others, advise believers to not hoard materialistic physical wealth, and to focus instead on spiritual wealth, that those who are more interested in physical wealth have fundamentally mis-understood the whole tenets of the majority of religions. If a religion advises that spirtual wealth is greater than material wealth, but a supposed adherent to the religion places greater inportance in material wealth, are they even truly a believer in their religion, or are they, like you said, merely hiding behind their chosen religion?

Re: about god
Then how does one 'learn'?
One answer may be that we're in the present, all we ever know is what we know at the present moment, thus we can only know what we do know at that moment in time. From what I see Obbe is not saying that we only know what we know now at the exact time of this post, forever. But we only know what we know in the present moment, which is every moment of our lives. How can you know what you do not know?
Another answer maybe in the anamnesis of the soul which holds all knowledge within itself, and we know everything, yet have not awakened awareness of it.
The most likely answer that I could think from Obbe would be that seeing as all we know is 'being', and at all moments we are 'being', then we know everything we will ever know. Since all we can truly know is contained within the being, the 'I AM', and everything else is an illusion, then by being we know everything that we can.
Of course, I'm just answering out of boredom, it may be that none of those interpretations are right.

Re: about god

Learning is an illusion of truth. Like the rules in a card game, life-lessons are based on the assumptions that the experience which taught them are real. Hell, the experience of 'learning' is based on the assumption that there is time, and at one point, you did not 'know' what you now believe you do.
Assumptions which cannot be known.
