Default An unfair ban dispute -RoFallAndBreakYourHypnol

This is an email I recieved from RoFallAndBreakYourHypnol today:

i was banned in sg apparently for page stretching in the sticky thread about using code tags to page stretch

i said that you could not page stretch with code tags and posted an example of them

they use a side scrolling bar

i was banned by meta for this

i also called him an idiot which i think made him angry

the reason given was "you think you are funny. well have a ban"

i believe this is un fair and would like to be un banned

he removed the post but it is not possible to page stretch using code

thank you

I think he said it all...could someone deal with this?

Did he email Meta about it already? Then normally that'd be the first step, wouldn't it?

I've stopped passing on emails from 'unfairly banned' members. They just get told to email the mod concerned and if that doesn't help then the admins.

Unless of course (as was the case with myself recently) the mod in question has reversed the infraction but had forgotten the ban remains.

Not getting at wires in any way, just saying that personally I've had enough of playing middle man. Either they persuade the mod concerned to reconsider (you know maybe even *cough* apologise ) or prove to the admins that it was unjust. And again from experience we all know that the first thing Zok does is email the mod concerned to get his view.

Well does it not strike anyone else as kind of daft that after a good mod of a forum makes a very polite request for people to NOT use code, someone goes and does it?

Anyone here seen those TV shows about problem children, and how whenever they're told not to do something they'll deliverately go and do it just to get attention? It seems that's what's happening here.

When I get Emails from people complaining about other mods, I try to tell them politely to go and email the mod in question, politely. That they're more likely to get results if they approach the matter nicely with the mod in question than piss and moan about it to another mod.

Allthough its' nice of you to care about a poster like that Wires. I'm impressed.

RoFallandbreakyourHypnol is right. Code tags do not cause page stretching.

So I agree with him that being banned for proving so is unfair, and kind of ridiculous.

However, as was mentioned above, he needs to contact whoever gave him the infraction, unless he already has and just needs the ban reversed by an admin or whatever.

Yeah, it does seem unfair.

I'm sure it'll be sorted out though...Either that, or there's more to the story than what we know?

This isn't a new rule [so settle down you who like to bitch at the drop of a hat], but a request.

And it's not just a random thing to annoy people either. When you use code it can totally stretch the page, while quote won't do that.

I'm not exactly sure just what code is used for, but from what I've seen there hasn't been a case where quote didn't work just as well.

Now, while I have said that this isn't a new rule, if I do see people using code a lot who never used it before, I will know they are doing it just to stretch the page. And that is an infractible thing to do.

Now maybe your average poster of SG has an even lower IQ than myself (!), but to me, the above makes it PRETTY FUCKING CLEAR that code useage, without a decent reason, is something that's not cool.

It's not the fact the poster used code, but that they used it specifically to spite the requests of a Mod, just to be a dick.

This whole thing seems like just another silly debacle where people jump on the bandwaggon and bitch about how Totse is 'dead' because of how moderators work here...following the rules.
And it sucks that a whiny poster, instead of taking it up with the mod in question, would go to a totaly irrelevant to the issue, very sympathetic mod who'd be sure to post such a silly issue here. Not a criticism of Wires.

On this note, I thought I'd mention Zok posted this thread (http://www.totse.com/community/showthread.php?t=2058645) in Suggestion Box, so I've been directing people seeking to be unbanned there.

But a moderator shouldn't be making such requests of the user in the first place. There's no rule about what kind of tags you're allowed to use in your posts. A moderator's requests are not rules.

He did it to show that code tags don't stretch the page.

If I say gravity is fake, and you drop an apple in front of me, it's not because you're being a dick, it's because you're showing that I was incorrect.

Of course, it turns out code tags DO stretch the page in IE 6, but, c'mon, it's fucking IE 6. It'll blow up if the day ends in "y" anyway...

I am posting this here so all the mods who care to look can see it, and know this is going on, in a nonspecific way.

Looking at the original thread, the reasoning of the poster and forum rules I see it as unjust and the ban reason even more so. RoFall may be a bit of an idiot but he generates conversation and is quite a good poster by SG standards. I think people need to remember that there are by no means just mods on totse - and by playing fair you earn the respect of posters like this, and avoid further confrontation down the line.
Further to this, the offending post could have been edited and a written warning given, a ban was OTT. Poster was trying to prove a point

I'm not sure why he emailed me exactly, but I am happy to fight his corner on this one.

Good point,well made. :)

As a very old longstanding mod though, Meta has his reasons for doing things on Totse, and a right to make a polite request.

It's unfair to assume that no one uses InternetExplorer, and yes, viewing totse in some browsers can be a pain in the fucking ass, and yes, code and quote spamming can be fucking horrible, especially if a large proportion of your bandwith is currently tackling pornography and the latest James Bond movie.
..

I'm not arguing with anyone, I just know that as a good mod Meta had his reasons. I hope he comes to this thread eventually and clarifies the situation.

I've got nothing else to say, and I dont want it to seem like I'm arguing.

It's hypocritical to say this I guess but maybe this is a topic for SG mods to discuss alone?

If I made a error, or did something that other mods question in S&A, I hope ketch would take a belt to me and Psycho would look at me in a disdainfull way, but not humiliate me publicly. Again I know that's not what you're trying to do, Wires.

Shit. I'm going to shut up before I offend someone.Sorry.

We're all grown ups, no belts should be needed and any 'criticism' should be made in a way that preserves the dignity of all parties. Meta knows me well enough (I should think) to know I wouldn't try to knock him.

First of all, SJ, that post of yours is totally stretching my page. Apparently it stretches in IE, but with Firefox you do get a scroll bar.

I saw no bar when he did it, so I thought he was doing it just to be a dick - something people at SH are good at doing.

When later in the thread I saw a screen shot of someone with Firefox - and saw the scroll bars - I realized my error and did reverse the infraction and was going to request the ban be reversed - which I am now doing.

And for the record, I did not say it was a rule or that I would ban anyone for doing it [unless I saw them doing it in thread after thread just to be a dick]. What I did was to ask that if they made something which would page stretch, to please use quote instead.

And, he did in fact email me - at least I assume it was him. He spammed my email with like 60+ empty emails.

Where as if he had made one email and was civil - as most people are when they do email me - I would have told him I had already seen my error and had reversed his infraction.

But again, I made no rule, only a request for those of us who use IE [as I now know the stretching lies].

The email RoFall uses is something like 'razorbladesintheicecream'
he doesn't seem like the type to spam your inbox either meta

I did say assumed.

Those emails were the only totse related ones I have received in a few days. So the timing of it made me think it was him. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. Doesn't really matter as they all went straight into my junk folder anyway.
