Ummm... The thing is, there really are no rules about use/misuse of power in the IRC. He therefore did not abuse his power, because there is no means by which to judge misuse. Channel ops are allowed to kick and ban for any reason they can (or can't) think up. You learn to either deal with it or leave.

Really, about the only rule in #totse is that only mods are allowed on the access list. (I assume it's #totse you're talking about.)

BTW, bans from that channel are usually short-lived. They are usually gone within a few minutes to a half-hour. You only get banned long-term if someone forgets to remove a ban or you repeatedly make an ass of yourself.

It wasn't even a ban. I just kept kicking him out every time he rejoined for like 2 or 3 minutes.

This whole thing is not about whether being kicked out of an online chatroom constitutes the abusing of someone's rights. It's about why mods should have the power to just kick people out of a chatroom for his/others' amusement. I understand that the IRC chatrooms don't have unequivocally clear rules, however it doesn't mean people should simply be denied access to it, even though only for a few minutes, for some arbitrary reasons.

Actually they do have unequivocally clear rules. It's just that those rules don't cover whether someone can be kicked for lulz.

I can be kicked for lulz, and I don't really care. If the ops decide to do so, they can. It's basically their room to play with, not mine. They don't technically have to let me in it in the first place. By entering I'm agreeing to follow their rules, including the rule that they have the right to kick me. If you don't like it, just don't enter. That's the easy way to avoid getting your ego bruised by being kicked from an online chat room. (Italics added just to emphasize the stupidity of getting upset over it.)

By your reasoning, if I don't like the way some place is run, I simply get up and leave? Let's say if I am not happy with the way my country is run, I simply shut the fuck up and leave? No. If you don't like the way things are in a certain place, be it a country or an online chatroom, you should speak out against it, in the hope of chaning it for the better. Just because the chat room rules state that moderators can kick people for their amusement it doesn't mean we have to take it. We can move to change the rules that we don't like.

Besides, you seem to imply that being kicked out of an online chatroom is not such a big deal as to not warrant a reaction. You couldn't be more wrong. The way I see it, it's a matter of principle. It doesn't matter if it's a mere online chatroom. It's the fact that people are abusing their power that matters.

That's not the point. Meta is constantly accused of abusing his power on totse; some of those complaints may be justified, others might not be. Instead of trying to play things by the book in order to prevent even the semblance of wrong doing, he goes ahead and acts like a complete fucking moron playing right into what others accuse him of being.

As for the rules in the IRC channel, it is completely reasonable for people to expect that freedom of speech is protected to the same extent (or a very similar one) in the IRC channel as it is on the main forums.

We all know that the forum rules don't apply on IRC, who cares. Quite simply, if the admins know that he publicly brags about being such a fool.....SOMEONE somewhere should sit up and think...."we have THIS fuckwit moderating our boards"?

A simple analogy to make my point better. Imagine a coach of a girl's softball team in Florida. What if it was discovered he was molesting little boys in California? Wouldn't those facts make people second guess the wisdom of that coach having such a position? By the logic you are using above,your response to that scenario would be....."well, he hasn't done that here...and besides these are girls not boys, so its different". That is skewed an inane logic at best.

And to the novel writer: You can't compare IRC - or even Totse.com - to a country. It is not a place where people live, work. It's a place they come to 'play'.

A more accurate analogy would be an arcade or a paintball place.

You go there to play but you have to abide by the owner's rules or you get kicked out. Though one difference is that a paintball or arcade is there to make money and so are a lot less likely to kick you out.

Again, I didn't ban him - that would have been against the rules - I kicked for all of 3 or 4 minutes.

Was it immature? Probably.

And if you would get that upset about being kick [kicked, not banned], then you take IRC - and the internet - way too seriously.

That's not the point at all. There's a difference between a country and a chat room. The chat room is effectively a private enterprise -- it's run by a few people, and they can choose who they want to have in it, and what content they allow in it. A country is a public enterprise -- its entire existence is to provide services to the public.

If I don't like the way 4chan is run, I don't go in and complain. I just avoid the site. Same idea here.

Just because you're a member of Totse, that doesn't mean you have any particular god-given right to participate in #totse. #totse has owners, called channel ops, and they can run it as they wish. You also have a choice -- you don't have to participate in that chat room if you don't like the rules. It's a pretty simple concept.

If we go by your ideas, we're going to have to complain about EVERY site and server whose rules you don't like.

Example: I don't like the rule that the NSA's servers are kept private. I am a citizen of this country, so I should know all the classified information the country produces. We have the right to see and discuss it, after all -- we have freedom of speech. Let's go complain about those damned Nazi NSA operatives who won't let us discuss government secrets!

I'm not going to argue with this. I don't always agree with Meta, and he knows this. I also know he won't always agree with me. That's part of life, and we all have to accept that sometimes people will act in ways we don't understand or agree with.

Sometimes Meta does things I wouldn't. I wouldn't act quite the same way as he has. But, and this is a big but, there is really no connection between totse.com and #totse aside from name, a link, a few rules of the chat room (basically, just the rule that only mods on totse.com can get autovoice or ops) and permission for the room to use the name. Beyond that, the rules of the room are Slashnet rules, not Totse ones.

It's not people trying to speak for Totse that bothers me. I just don't see why people should be spurned for trying to contribute to the forums they enjoy because they aren't a mod. Usually threads of that nature do alright. It's not like it has to be stickied or anything.
