Default There should be a word in between "like" and "love"

Both "like" and "love" are pretty much universally recognized as the standard terms of endearment (at least in English).

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has noticed the amount of confusion that can result from a person having to choose either of the words to describe how they feel for someone. I mean, you wouldn't typically tell someone you love them after only a few dates, but by that time, you might have developed more than a mere liking for them. Depending on context, to like someone can mean that you see them as a good friend, or it can mean that you, well, you know, like like them... :p

And the problem is that the context is only truly understood by the person speaking the word.

Have you ever had a situation where you could have greatly benefited from such a word? Something right in the middle of like and love?

Maybe this is an indication in the decline of people who understand and use imagery. Are you telling me that you wouldn't be able to explain how you feel about someone without using the words like and love?

I suppose I could explain it to someone, but it would be a lot easier if there was a word, just like there's a word for "like" and "love".

Really though, how would you say it? Give me an example...

I suppose I could explain it to someone, but it would be a lot easier if there was a word, just like there's a word for "like" and "love".

Really though, how would you say it? Give me an example...

So I've been dating a girl for a couple months and I've moved past the point where I more than "like" her, I would say something like, "I just wanted you to know that over the past couple of months I've really loved spending time with you. The first time I met you I know I liked you, but now...it's more than that. Almost as if I've known you for years and every time I see you I'm excited just to hear your voice." Lol, shit. I don't know, something like that, maybe less emotion if you are trying to be Mr. E-Thug like getoffmylawn over here.

That is how I would kind of lead to the discussion about where she stands in my life and how I am feeling more connected to her than just like, and that I want to become exclusive and what not. This has numerous scenarios to play out afterwards to continue your description.

I think single words to describe a large range of emotions is kind of a let down. Which is why people write endlessly about what encompasses the word love. Although that is just an opinion.

And thats why I like spanish(in this case):

Me gustas : I like you, not the 2nd level or love.

Te quiero: Literatelly it'd translate to I want you, but that's not the case. It's more than 'like' and less than 'love'.

Te amo: I love you.

CarbonB, your example was alright, in fact quite similar to something I would probably say if I had to describe such a feeling.

But my point is so easily shown by the example below:

And thats why I like spanish(in this case):

Me gustas : I like you, not the 2nd level or love.

Te quiero: Literatelly it'd translate to I want you, but that's not the case. It's more than 'like' and less than 'love'.

Te amo: I love you.

It's actually kind of ironic though, that I find this so great. Because I once got into a debate with a friend about the complexity of some languages. I told him that I didn't see the point in learning a complicated language, with a richer vocabulary and many more ways to describe things, because I prefer the simplicity of a language like English.

But for a case like this, I can see the benefits.

...simplicity of a language like English.

It's really really really not that simple of a language, we're just used to it.

Well, in a way, English is actually quite complicated.

Ex: http://www.spellingsociety.org/news/media/poems.php

But what I mean though is that there are other languages out there that are much denser and more complex than English. I mean, that example about there being a word in between 'love' and 'like' in Spanish is just one of MANY like that. The conjugations can also get pretty elaborate.

In terms of grammatical anomalies though, English does have quite a few!

English has the LARGEST vocabulary (despite Finnish, I guess, which theoretically has an infinite number of words ;) ) due to our huge number of borrowed words.

Personally it seems like there are plenty of words that could fill the gap.

I

adore,
feel deeply affectionate for,
am infatuated with,
feel amorously towards,

you

Those are all shitty shitty examples but it's the best I could do off the top of my head. Whatever you do, don't say "I love spending time with you" though. :p

This is the first thing i've noticed where I actually agree with you. You can't just explain the feeling in between "like" and "love" with another word. Who can say what is between like and love anyways. When does like become Love? Its all a matter of opinion or perspective. Like and Love are words that everyone has a different personal definition for. We essentially have enough words as it is, and more words only complicates things. We use far too many labels in our world.

"I really care about you"
That seems to do the job most of the time if you like short sentences. I would rather write over a page of metaphors and deeply emotionally charged words but whatever.

I also fall in love very easily, and it's not a trait I particularly enjoy because it's very easy for me to get hurt.

I'm pretty sure English has the most words out of any language. If not the most, then it's still up there. It's also one of the hardest languages to learn, because of the large vocabulary and the fact that the rules that govern English aren't all that rigid. Or this is what I gather from the few linguistics/language classes I've taken over the years.

Yeah, I also thinks it helps that Spanish is a romance language, lol.

I don't feel bad about using love. Even when it's not like "real" love. "Real" love is elusive.

"i glove you" was a text I once sent to someone I liked and kinda loved.
'course he didnt pick up that I was saying 'love' because I was at work, and that generally meant being covered in latex gloves and gowns up to my elbows in shit.
He probably thought I was being shexy or something. :S
