more sex=less aids? wtf?
I was at the library today, and I found a book with a title similar to the title of my thread.
basically, the author was arguing that we can greatly reduce the amount of people who have aids if more people who are celibate or monogamous go out and fuck other people.
here's an example of his reasoning (and the example he used in the book):
a guy, mike, and a girl, joan, work together. they've been talking, and it's pretty much decided, yet unspoken, that they're going to hook up after the next office party this weekend.
on the morning of the party, mike sees an ad promoting celibacy, so he decides not to go to the party because of the ad or something like that. as a result, joan hooks up with the (male) office slut. he gives her aids.
the author's reasoning was that if mike, who wasn't very sexually experienced and as a result had no std's, had hooked up with joan instead of frank, the office slut, hooking up with her, she wouldn't have gotten aids.
another example he used was that for every person who doesn't have aids that goes to a bar and picks someone up, that's one less person that will get aids as a result of being picked up at a bar (assuming, of course, that the person being picked up doesn't have it either). because for every person without aids that picks someone up, that's one less person for someone with aids to pick up.
basically, think of it like this: everybody who has casual sex makes up a stream. the people who have aids pollute the stream, and the people who don't have aids help clean up the stream. so the more people who don't have aids that are in the stream, the cleaner the stream is.
one last argument. i know it doesn't make sense, but it was in the book, so i'm including it: say everybody in a certain town is in a monogamous relationship. the women are happy in the relationship, so they don't cheat. the men, on the other hand, want an average of 2 partners per year. the men are forced to go to prostitutes (no word on whether or not the prostitutes are in relationships), and since every man in the town goes to the same couple of prostitutes, one of them is eventually going to give them aids, and they will in turn spread the aids to the rest of the men, who will in turn infect their innocent wives.
ok, one more thing that he said. he said that frank would be less likely to use condoms because he already has aids and doesn't have to worry about catching it, so he's more likely to spread it to other people. mike, on the other hand, will use a condom to try to prevent himself from getting aids.
i think his arguments are total bullshit, but that's just me. what do you all think?

Re: more sex=less aids? wtf?
agreed. thats a total assumption that joan is going to choose mike OVER the office slut.
realistically, if joan is into casual hookups, logic would dictate she would probably fuck both guys over a period of time. So the equation goes from just 1 or 2 people with aids to now mike thrown into the fun as well.
Who the fuck agreed to publish shite like this? what is it self help or something? this guy cant be much of an academic, from your description.

it was in the 'leisure reading' section of the school library... the whole book wasn't just about sex and aids, but that's what the first chapter was about and that's as far as i got before i couldn't stand it anymore.
supposedly he also explains why it's good to cut in line at the water fountain and other things that i can't remember.

Re: more sex=less aids? wtf?
Actually its not that retarded of a concept because it is sort of true. Its main flaw is that its dependent on the non-aids celebate people to be able to get the girl/guy over the whores/sluts. I mean in a perfect world all the celebate non aid people would get laid and the std sluts would be over looked and have to resort to their own kind. Because I know if they nice celebate girl wanted to come over and have fun id much rather go with her then the slut. But since she isnt having sex I go for the slut and risk aids. But it is a pretty dumb concept on the whole. Dude I wish I went to a school that had books promoting sex to get rid of aids tahts fucking best thing in the world more people should read that shit and have sex.

Re: more sex=less aids? wtf?
yeah but whats more is even shite like this book, takes a long fucking time to produce and get published. This theory he has isnt enacted, and will not be enacted realistically anywhere in the forseeable future unless there is a massive shift in society...and by then we will have most likely cured aids.
Its just such a waste of time/life/thought in addition to being a steaming pile of bullshit.
oh yeah the one thing i do think he missed is that having sex with virgins/celibates does indeed cure aids. BECAUSE WE ALL FUCKING ADVERTISE WE HAVE THE FUCKING DISEASE.

Re: more sex=less aids? wtf?
come on! this thread should either spark debate or at the very least convince everyone that the author of that book is a total idiot.
