Captcha Idea
Everyone at one point on Totse, seems to complain about kidiots...I've thought of a way to reduce the youngsters on Totse.
A while back I was using one of the family computers at my dad's house, and due to my 7 year old half sister, it's got CyberPatrol installed.
Now CyberPatrol tends to block the user from typing out certain words (swear/curse words), so I recently thought about having the text in a captcha image one of these 'banned' words. The user goes to sign up, types in the word, and it's then replaced with ****.
Just an idea.

Re: Captcha Idea
It's been done before and I hope it never happens again
Censoring out things we don't like goes completely against the spirit of TOTSE, I'd rather have the option of saying "jew, nigger, spic, fuck, cunk, chink, whatever..." then to not have that ablility at all.

Re: Captcha Idea
I kind of like the idea of having complex math equation captchas. But still, the only purpose that captchas should serve on totse is to filter out bots and things that aren't real people. Weeding out stupid people would be nice, but it goes against what totse stands for - free speech and anonymity.

Re: Captcha Idea
No no! I'm not on about censoring anything out. That's what CyberPatrol does...When it detects the user type a blacklisted word...It blocks it...So if in order to sign up you need to type 'fuck', for example, CyberPatrol would change it to ****, obviously this wouldn't match the captcha, and that's one less child on Totse I guess.
Yes there are more than enough flaws in my idea, but it's just a passing thought that could evolve I guess.

Suppose so...Ah well :)
If free speech means dealing with kids, then it's a price I'll gladly pay.

Re: Captcha Idea
Freedom of speech is fair enough, but sometimes Censorship is better.
One day when I have my own version of totse, whatever it may be called (Probably yoyo's guinea pig land or something similarly gay) people who use racial insults, or insult someone in regards to their race or what country they're from would be instantly banned. Not only that but I'd gather their IP, inform their IP provider and get them into big big trouble with mummy and daddy.
Everyone I guess, uses the word 'nigger' or 'paki' once in a while, but when some shit parrots these words incessantly like some little kid who's just found a naughty word, should be shot.
Censorship like that wouldnt weed out idiots, but it would get rid of the ones lacking the imagination to put any effort into their insults.
Let me just go and get my little Hitler costume on and my flame retardant shield for the flames I'll no doubt get for this post.

Nah totse's not about that. In trying to filter out the idiots you'll also filter out the brilliant people who can't particularly be bothered to prove themselves that much too

I'm glad the moderators of this fair site have a good understanding of free speech.
This sort of post tempts me to resign on the spot.

Re: Captcha Idea
If it were my site and I was running it how I wanted to run my own site, I'd restrict people from posting certain things or from registering in the first place. But the whole idea of totse is that anyone regardless of how stupid, young, naive, or racist they might be, is allowed to post whatever they want as long as it doesn't violate one of the rules in the FAQs. It's clear to me that Jeff would not want to hinder the registration process for anyone in any way possible (the current registration situation is different - as I understand it, keeping reg closed right now is keeping totse from having further database problems).
Like I said, if it was my site, I might have some restrictions on who can register and post, but that's not in the philosophy of totse, if you ask me.

I'd totally spam your forums.

But then you're biased and unproffessional and try to pick fights with other mods or try to get them removed because you dont like them, rather than because they're not good mods.
I know that Totse is for freedom of speach and all, but really, do we have that much right to it on a privately owned website?
We can have our little discussions here, but at the end of the day the owner could come along and remove us all. Or if this software allows it, he could make everyone on totse, trolls spammers and good posters alike, all administrators.
So I enjoy being allowed to say stuff here, but if what I said was censored by the owners, then... well I wouldnt have any right to bitch about it, at all.None.
I might be able to explain what I mean better by using a mental image:
You have your right to say whatever you want, wherever, whenever. But if you come into my home swearing and cussing about [insert race here] I have every right to throw you out of the window.
I'm leaving this discussion now. I'm sure those with buddies who I've dared to offend will jump in here with targets locked. Life is just..to long to deal with such shit.

This is the most evil fucking shit I have ever heard. Seriously? Racial slurs banned? Surely you must be joking. If not, you have no place on &totse which HAS THE FIRST AMENDMENT ON THE HOME PAGE.
Good job asshat.

personally, I don't use nigger or paki ever.
Though towel-head may sometimes come out.
In most parts of America the pinhead youngsters bring into their speech/writings, their parentally taught prejudices, using offensive labels and whatnot.
It's nice when other Totse posters shoot them down.
If they weren't allowed the initial post, they'd never hear from others how wrong it was.
IMO, Totse brings a more wordly view to youngsters isolated in small town USA.
So some sort of robotic censoring seems less than optimal to me.

Actually, you raise a very valid point. In fact, I had an argument with cosmo about a year ago that went much the same. Someone started a thread in B&M complaining that their other thread was locked. I explained to them that it was spam and shouldn't have even been posted in the first place. Cosmo got indignant and said "Well, zok, when you delete threads you're violating the right to free speech" I explained to him that he did not have a right to free speech, but rather jeff is granting him free speech on the server. Jeff has appointed moderators and admins to make sure that people do not abuse that privilege. It's Jeff's server, his private property that he is giving you the right to access and append. Just the same as how I can't go and write on Jeff's car with a permanent marker and then say "Free speech, bitches!"
My point (and I think the point that Tor was rudely trying to get at) is that we do have the privilege to censor things, but we prefer to give people as few restrictions as possible. I think the captcha idea is a bit restrictive (though I do admire it's cleverness). Totse's always had sort of a "we'll take your sick, wounded, stupid, dumb, retarded, arrogant, racist, etc" philosophy. We try not to exclude anyone unless they've shown us that they need to be excluded.

Re: Captcha Idea
Thanks to everyone for giving it a thought, it was just a passing idea, and I'm glad it brought on discussion.
Perhaps another method could be built upon it that is less restrictive?
