How to break up "well"
Yeah lets just say my girlfriend and I have mutually decided we might not be the best couple in the world, I tried conforming to her she tried conforming to me we both tried 50/50 and made compromises, but it just seems like our relationship is on a downward spiral. She also wants to break up, but still remain friends with me. I feel the same way. We were much better friends than we were from a Boyfriend/girlfriend standpoint.
Now exactly how am i going to do this with out makeing everything go to hell or what?

Re: How to break up "well"
How about you tell her exactly what you just told us and see what she says?

You both agree that you're better off as friends...
What exactly is the issue here again?

I think the issue is that there's gonna be rising tension as their relationship has changed. It can work out, but it's gonna take some good ol'fashion elbow grease.

Ohh ok, yeah I guess that could be an issue.
But if they're both on the same wave-length right now, then it shouldn't be too difficult to deal with.
I mean, I could understand if he still had feelings for her, or if she still had feelings for him, or if the breakup was caused by some kind of major event.
But it really sounds like they just drifted apart, back into the way things were before.
OP, just think of how awkward it would be to try and be friends if you weren't already in agreeance on the topic... Now your situation should automatically seem much less difficult.
Besides, you can't completely erase all the tension after any relationship. It's a part of life, and it makes it all that much more interesting.

Re: How to break up "well"
Seen it, been there, done that...
Basically you both agree to break up and still be friends, but you are worried about what might happen to your friend-friend relationship afterwards, as I see it...
In high school I got together with girl as was in love with for ages, it didn't work out... We were in the same class, had the same friends, were both really good friends...
What you do is, you give it some time after the relationship. You'll talk (as chit-chat), and you won't be as close as you were before. But don't worry that'll come back in time.
The reason being - some feelings will linger. It did not work out, but that does not mean feelings are gone. You'll feel a bit uncomfortable. At a point those feelings will pass into more sisterly love, and things will be great.
Depending, it can take some time...

Tell her you can't hang out anymore, you lost your arms in the war.
