I just found out that my father, whom I no longer speak to, made deposits at the sperm bank ,and through a sort of 7 degrees of seperation I know the person that will be the mother. Which is why I know that he did this at all. So, I'm going to have a half brother/sister that I might never know but I do hope I at least get to meet them.

So what I wanted to know is would it be acceptable to have some sort of relationship with the child?

You know, genetic relationships seem to yield a lot of similarity between individuals. But there's a lot of similar experiences you and his person (or people) will at least share a strong, atypical societal reaction: not associating strongly with a father figure. On a purely verbal level, at least, you'll have something to talk about, and you may find things about him/her that compel you to continue the relationship, or you may not.

But it's definitely worthwhile trying to meet them at some point.

I am a male. I was just hoping for a brother because I already have a litle sister.

I have a half-brother. It's pretty cool, I'm just over 16 years older than him. It's gonna kinda suck not being close to him but I think once I'm 30 or something I'll show him the ropes.

Heh, I have a half-sister whom I've never met a few years older than me [twenty-two or so] - when my parents first got married my father was travelling a lot for work, one thing led to another and he got saddled with maintenance payments for eighteen years. Oeps.

Know her Christian name, know the country she's in, but nothing else. Not even her surname. Father doesn't want me getting in contact with her until he dies lest she try in for a claim on his possessions (think it might also be guilt. suspect it may be so, not my place to question though).

Funnily enough, I've never even thought to be remotely...upset with my father for endangering my parents' marriage like that, because they're happily married for twenty-five years next week. Whole incident happened before I was born, so I feel no emotional involvement. Was just weird to get told she existed though.

I don't know if I'll ever try to meet her though. :\

I suppose you could at LEAST talk to the would be mother, and find out if it's something she wants for her child. I think it's awkward knowing you have half siblings, but not knowing them. I have 2 half sisters and a half brother (we share the same father, they share the same mother).
I kind of wish I had met them, but at the same time, I think it would be awkward now.

EDIT: She's probably going to want to know how you got ahold of this info, since sperm donations are supposed to be given out anon. She might not like the fact that you know at all
