Telling My Girlfriend That I Don't Believe in God
I have always questioned my Catholic upbringing, but I never had the guts to myself that I just didn't believe any of it until earlier this year. But this isn't the forum for that.
So I've been dating this girl for just over a year now. When we first started out, I told her that I believed in Jesus Christ as a messiah but I wasn't sure exactly how we should interpret his work. To be honest, at that point in time I was whole-heartedly agnostic (if that makes any sense). She is and was raised as a non-denominational Christian. Anyway, by March of this year, I accepted that God simply did not exist (please don't get into this aspect of the post). I have been hinting at my atheism for quite some time to her, but she is the type that will just ignore something until it is layed on her explicitly, not that she is stupid or anything.
I can honestly say that I love her. She doesn't talk about Jesus all the time like one might expect from somebody of her faith, so the whole religious aspect of her person doesn't bother me. I am just not sure of her opinion of atheists. For all I know, I could be getting dumped tonight, but I can't wait any longer to tell her.
What I wanted to know is if anybody has had a similar experience with their significant others. What are the chances that she'll break up with me over it?

Re: Telling My Girlfriend That I Don't Believe in God
I don't think she'll break up with you for it. It'll worry her and make her question if a life with you is possible. But she'll decide or be advised that its just a passing crisis of faith on your behalf and that she should pray harder for you to find god again.
Thats my guess.

^Nah. I'm happy with her. If she's somebody who can't deal with dating an atheist, though, I wouldn't want to be with her anyway. THEN I would take your advice.

Really, aslong as you're not going to start criticising her faith, or try to make her quit it, I dont see how it should matter too much.
Dont be a dick, respect her beleifs even if you think they're stupid, and generally avoid the topic as much as possible.
Religion, to some humans, is such an important thing. :S

best case scenario: You tell her your an atheist, lifting the weight off your shoulders and she accepts it. Win-win situation
Worst case scenario: You tell her your an atheist lifting the weight off your shoulders and she dumps you. Win-lose situation

Re: Telling My Girlfriend That I Don't Believe in God
It's not as if you're telling her you're gay.
Just casually say "So yeah, I decided I don't believe in any of it any more." So long as you're not church scholars or anything, it shouldn't matter. Is she the no-pre-marital-sex type?

Re: Telling My Girlfriend That I Don't Believe in God
No I think you should tell her. Just dont get pushy about the topic. Dont laugh at her beleifs. If you truly love this girl you'll have to accept the fact she's of a different beleif to you. But that being said, if she truly loves you she'll have to accept your beleifs (or lack of) also.
There's no point faking something important in a relationship.

Re: Telling My Girlfriend That I Don't Believe in God
Things'll be fine, yo. My wife is all into the christianity thing, and I don't even believe in a higher power. It's all about the give and take, y'know? If she wants to go to church, I'll be right there with her. And when it comes to the kids, they'll be subject to all of the mainstream religions and told to make a choice for themselves, as well as understanding our reasons for believing what we do.
You can make it work. ^^

dude... if you tell her you're going down the road more travelled... but in this situation it's not really necessary.. if you WAIT FOREVER to tell her, then shit, it doesn't really matter i don't fucking know... this is too much effort. peace out, Stealth7131 is my AIM. i'll talk to you about it if you want, i'm an atheist and have had many girlfriends who bleieved in god... ultimately, you're gonna end up upset with the bitch ANYHOW so you might as well be honest with the ho.

Religion is one of those things you tell ppl your in a relationship with. Just like diseases, mental disorders, taste in music, etc. Its part of who you are and she needs to know that.

Re: Telling My Girlfriend That I Don't Believe in God

why tell her at all?
If religion isn't important to you then it's no important to you...Just don't bring it up. And if she decides to talk about God or Jesus or whatever, just sidestep the conversation after a couple minutes.
It's not like telling your girlfriend "Erm...Sweetie...I'm allergic to eggs" or something...That shit's important.
Telling her that you don't believe in any higher power really isn't.
If she loves you and you love her, your different beliefs shouldn't be a problem.

Re: Telling My Girlfriend That I Don't Believe in God
Thanks for the advice averybody. I did end up telling her tonight, and I have to say it went surprisingly well, all things considered. I didn't know if she would be fine with it or hate me, since she is a regular church attending/ mildly youth group-like Christian. We went and saw Superbad, which I thought might put her in a better mood to take the news. When we got back to my house, we settled down to watch tv.
I put it to her blunt, figuring I should do it like a Band-Aid (one motion!). Immediately tears filled her eyes and I thought I had made the wrong choice. From there, I slowly coaxed her into conversation. I explained my basic opinions. I told her that I would accept her way of life if she would accept mine. She told me how she wanted to be with me in heaven and that she had lost that opportunity, but she would still live with me here on good ol' Earth (no, those weren't her words). An hour and a long conversation later, she tells me how glad she is that I told her.
TL/DR: Mission Accomplished.

Re: Telling My Girlfriend That I Don't Believe in God
I remember dealing with a similar situation with my girlfriend. The guy she had been dating before (that technically, I stole her away from) was a fundamentalist and was starting to warm her up to that kind of view. She also comes from a loosely religious family. I was very blunt with her early on in the relationship that I did not believe in god, not out of spite or anything, but simply because I felt that there was not a compelling enough case for so strong a statement. She gradually came to the same conclusion, but I was careful not to press the subject so as to sway her opinion.
The hairy part came in breaking this to her parents, who, while not regular church attendees, consider themselves fairly good Christians. She didn't want to tell them for fear of being awkward, but in time, I was able to convince her to bring it up. Apparently, they took it pretty awkwardly, but I wound up winning them over later by proving that I was still of solid moral character.
The reason why she told them and not me was because she lives several hours away, making it so that we can only be together every couple of weeks, but it's almost been two years and we're still going strong.

Re: Telling My Girlfriend That I Don't Believe in God
Or so you think...
lol I'm actually getting into a long distance (hour and a half) relationship with a catholic girl and I'll probably end up in an awkward conversation with her parents. She already knows I don't believe in god though so its all good between us.

I'm glad things went well. :)
I'm also glad she didnt try to get you to go back to your religion, and that she didnt push the "I dont want you to go to hell" thing on you.
Good job.
