Default A request and idea for IFIOTW.

I was thinking a sub-forum called INTFIOTW (I Need To Find It On The Web).

The idea of a sticky post for members to request help finding stuff on the web has come up often. There is also no other place to ask these queries. Anything posted asking for help finding any such information gets flamed for obvious reasons of course, nothing found on the web? A sub would solve all that.

As for the sticky idea, it was never done because; I can see any questions drowning in the mess of random responces for attempts to guess, makes jokes and the actual true answers!

Your thoughts appreciated. Adding the sub even better!

It could work, but I could see it becoming a forum full of questions with no answers. I'm sure it'd get a lot of traffic from people looking for things, but I doubt many would go there to help others out.

I've actually long-thought IFIOTW could benefit from this, and it would make a rare useful subforum if people would help others out as well.

As to whether it would get helpful posters... my gut feeling is that it would, but we wouldn't really know until it was implemented. I bet we'd get a lot more helpful people if rep was re-implemented ;)

I know it's not my call to make, either, but IAmMrPositive so deserves the mod spot if the subforum was made, he contributes an awful lot to IFIOTW and seems to have a great knowledge of what's out there on the internet.

Maybe we should do a dry-run with a sticky. See how that works out.

dry-run with a sticky

I'm not sure what that sounds like, but it doesn't sound right.

I actually like this idea. I've thought to myself many times, "I really want to find a site that has XYZ - should i post in IFIOTW or another related forum?" There would be LOTS of requests for torrent and warez sites - probably lots of porn too. But I think it would be a good idea. Make a poll in the forum or test the idea out with a sticky like suggested.

Good idea, Storm!

Not too sure how effective the sticky will be i judging the idea. Two different concepts. A fourm will be in the general scheme of things. The problem with a sticky in the first place was the extra posts flooding the thread.

"Great idea"
"If you are looking for X, you can find it here is link."

Posting if you are looking for replies defeats the concept and would drown out everything valid, so does congrats and that doesn't count the attempted tries at guessing the link.

I did try and implement a sticky, it lasted a few hours and didn't solve the actual problem within IFIOTW.

But I'll try a poll then the sticky again and watch the results.

[edit=The poll (http://www.totse.com/community/showthread.php?t=2047533) has been added.]

I originally started a post in this thread about 12 hours ago suggesting maybe try the sticky.
Then after thinking about it, and re-reading Stormy's thoughts on the sticky, it did seem like connecting responses to questions in one long sticky would be totally unwieldy and after awhile a mess.
Maybe if the posters always quote the original question, so a peruser could understand which answers went where, there could be some order.
Maybe make that a posting rule.
But, I kind of think the sticky could become too exasperating, particularly if it gets to be many pages of posts.

But I guess it won't hurt to try it.

I think that would be a good idea for a sub-forum. At least trail it and see how it goes :)

Unless IAmMrPositive can be added to IFIOTW it might not be likely??? subforum mods are inherent in vbul.

Allthough I'm a little worried about the negative effect it may have on all other forums.

If someone needs to find say, a recipe online, if they go to INTFIOTW rather than OI, OI might suffer.
If someone wanted to find a good place that discusses drugs, BLTC might suffer.
And so on..

?

Actually it has nothing to do with the other forums. There is generally in forum questions about a site, movie, picture or cartoon strip they saw, heard about etc type questions popping up a lot and betweens flames and "google it", there are responces to give an answer. But in general there has to be a link to something found that also includes a description to fit IFIOTW. That is generally why HMFIOTW (Help Me Find It On The Web) has been devised.

As for your concerns on other forums, IFIOTW has never really had to worry about the borders between forums and if that does eventuate, they will be transferred like any other mis-posted thread to the appropriate forum!

[edit=I should elaborate, the help requested is generally IFIOTW style questions in reverse. The answers would generally fit the forum! I have never seen any questions, threads that could really be a OI or BLTC question! If I had a food question I'd go to the forum best suited to answer my question. Food is OI drugs is Erowid... jk I mean BLTC!]

I think it would be a good idea too. And I think if you you make sure the forum description says no torrents or warz sites [don't know what much can be done about porn but stating the obvious: No CP]. Plus make an announcements or a sticky emphasizing the point. I think that after an initially high number of such things, that it will soon enough level off and decline and after a time it becomes a very small problem - if a problem at all.

That's how it was - IIRC - in BLTC when we first started not allowing people to give or request sources. We rarely have someone make such a post anymore too.

Although I'm a little worried about the negative effect it may have on all other forums.

?

It would be no different than it is now. The posts are still being made. The only difference is that the might be a sizable increase - perhaps and hopefully very sizable increase - in the number of such threads made. But that won't effect the other forums either.

I'm glad to see this implemented. New-forum spam, but that'll disappear soon enough.

Yeah, pretty much. I decided just to ignore the spam for now like it's no big deal. They'll get bored eventually.

Zok: I may not of stated the change well enough I apologize. I made a correction in the reply to yoyobek and to the poll thread. But no real defined HERE IT IS deal. For now it can stay as is except for the updated description coming soon. I'll have something for you soon. I'm not the greatest at communicating my thoughts right now.
