Default Request for a military forum

This has been brought up before; I'm just keeping it fresh.

It's been made quite apparent recently that there are a lot of members of the military in the forums, myself and Xip being the two that immediately come to mind. We both support the idea of having a military forum.

I can see how it could easily be a mostly Q-and-A forum, but there are other topics that could easily come about:

Cross-rating/MOS changing
Enlistment questions WITHOUT the recruiter bullshit spin
Intermilitary policy changes
Information about living in certain regions
Schooling requirements
Boot camp myths
Etc.Thoughts?

It could be enlightening for those wanting to enlist. They will learn the pros and cons of each service firsthand! No sales pitch from recruiters!

I like it from the aspect of civilians, military personal and spouses of military personal.

Weapons & Combat

I don't think there'd be enough activity to justify a whole new forum, and W&C could be expanded slightly to include military discussion. Its pretty much the de facto military discussion forum anyway.

Then perhaps it could be a sub-forum of W&C.

I could recommend an update of description or as stated a subforum. But then again, not many people tend to notice the descriptions unless they choose to flame!

We already have a ton of Armed Forces members in W&C of various countries and services and we don't get too much military-related traffic. The most we get is your typical "what's bootcamp like" or "I want to be a mercenary" gig.

And to be honest, I'd prefer we not have subforums in W&C- I see no need for it, we don't get enough traffic to warrant it, in my opinion, and it'd be less convenient to have a subforum for moderational purposes. Also, the subforum in P:LRC gets no traffic, and we just discussed a Martial Arts subforum and not many people seemed to really want one for the same reasons.

Military forum doesn't really sound like it would fit in here, may make for a series of informative threads but even a sub-forum sounds a bit much.

I don't think it's discussed enough to have its own forum. A W&C sub-forum sounds good, though.

I was reading this (http://www.totse.com/community/showthread.php?t=2045559) thread just before I saw this one.

I support this idea.
It would be really good to have a forum dedicated to the advice of joining any of the forces, actually being told by people who've been there and done that.. or are doing that.

RY is great but I'm guessing a large proportion of posters there dont have any real experience in any form of military so much of their advice whilst still usefull wouldnt be utterly precise.

IMO we have more than enough forums, and no need for this one. These types of questions fit into W&C just fine, and there aren't enough of them to warrant this even being a subforum.

Something might be interesting and useful to a small proportion of people, but that's what threads are for. I can't see this getting enough traffic to justify it, especially when it already fits just fine into an existing forum.

How do you define 'too many forums' ?

Now if a forum was created and it was dead dead dead and got a total of two posts a day, then perhaps that forum would be unnescessary. But of all the new forums added after the second big bang a while back, they're all doing very well.

I guess it's up to Jeff and if he thinks the effort will be worth it?

I didn't really imagine a forum just about "school" would be doing well. But I see the idea of military forum getting about the same traffic. Which would make it viable!

Hopefully someone gets my point.

Also, I have noticed that there are a lot of people who post in the newest forums that never talked about the things they talk about in there before, simply because there was never a forum that was tailored to that specific subject line and because the content of the post wasn't very "welcome" in the closest relative forum.

I'm willing to bet that if this forum were to be created, there would be a lot of threads because of the aforementioned.

Well, I said more than enough, not 'too many'. I don't think there are many more forums we can add with any justification. There are a few I would consider extraneous, though, and just because they can be introduced doesn't mean they should. CT is the best example, it fits just fine under GP and since it has such a small range of discussion it barely gets posted in. Same with the subforums, which I personally think are mostly unnecessary. A military forum is something that fits under an existing forum and something that, while useful to some people, has a limited appeal and range of subjects. Like I said, that's what threads are for, not whole forums. We shouldn't be adding forums just for the sake of it.

I agree with Happy on this one, there are a lot of topics that could be interesting and informative but would only serve any use to a smal fraction of the posters here, adding a forum just sake of these discussions would be silly.

I mean I love reading about comic books but I know that a sub-forum dedicated to them would go down faster than a lead zeppelin.

We already get military threads in W&C, but there aren't very many and the ones we get are repeat questions of "what branch/service should I join?", "Can I be a ____?", and "What is boot camp like?" We'd love more members, but those questions typically already get answered by military members already. I honestly don't see how a new forum would be different from the Combat aspect of Weapons and Combat. What would W&C become? More Martial Arts oriented? I wouldn't like that. We don't have enough MA discussion for a MA forum.

They can be but they usually only go after certain groups of people, I'm not sure 16 year olds who forkomb Second Life are what they're looking for. :p

Surprisingly, I was never called by any Armed Forces when I was in highschool. Never written either. It took college ROTC to get one onto me.

The fact TV wants it means I'd back the call for the forum.

But I'm somehow uneasy about there being a military forum on totse.

Not quite sure why.

Seems somehow to contradict the free thinking, anti establishment spirit of the place.

But like I said, if Truborn thinks its a good idea then it can have my vote.

Zok,acidmelt: If this does happen and assuming TV mods it then may I suggest someone like zonko to co-mod it? He's a extremely good longtime poster, known for his active and genuine support of various 'terrorist' groups and a dislike of national armies and Crown Forces inparticular. I feel this would give the forum balance and prevent it descending into a hang out for flag waving
wannbe rambos.

Or maybe *gasp* a female pacifist mod?

This forum has been discussed and shot down by zok and acidmelt many times.

A few months ago I would have said that I didn't think that there'd be enough interest to warrant it. But in light of all the people that I know of here who have joined the military - not to mention the interest I have seen others express in joining, I think that it would be a good addition.

In other words: I'm all for it.
