This is where you can sign up to be a moderator for Spurious Generalities. We like to rotate moderators in and out of this forum because it is so high traffic - moderators tend to "burn out" or moderate poorly after a while.

In order to be a moderator of Spurious you must post in this thread. It follows that you must be a moderator before signing up to moderate spurious. If you do not post in this thread, there will be no record of when you submitted your name, when you are to be added, and when you are to be removed.

We will try to keep at LEAST one "experienced SG mod" in the forum at all times (someone who has been through more than 1 rotation or more than 3 months in the forum). This is because Spurious is not like any other forum on totse. Moderating this forum takes a lot of tolerance, patience, and skill in order to keep the forum clean while everyone is still happy. Having an experienced moderator to show you the ropes is an invaluable asset.

To start out (we may end up changing this) terms will last for 2 months. A rotation of two moderators will be done every month (if the situation permits: one experienced and one new). For the most part, things will work on a first come first serve basis. It is, however, possible that you do not get to moderate the forum until the next month because we were unable to complete a quota of at least one experienced mod in the forum at all times. After we have enough people who are experienced at moderating SG, we won't have that problem.

If you must leave in the middle of your term, let me know and I'll see to it that we get someone to fill in the rest of your term. We can work out the details about that when it occurs.

In order to keep this from being a mad dash to sign up first, I'm going to take all the names that were submitted in the first few days of this thread and randomize them. This way, if you happened to read this thread late, you still have a chance at being in the first batch of SG mods.

Sound good?

Ok, I've come up with a list. I talked it over with Kate (who I usually trust with SG matters) and we both thought this rotation would work well. It's mostly random, except for a few tweeks to keep experienced mods in the forum. Please notice that only two moderators are changed per month - Thus a single shift is 2 months.

First month:
kate
Mr.Happy
Mokothar
jackketch

Second Month:
Mokothar
Jackketch
PirateJoe
Social Junker

Third Month:
PirateJoe
kelsokid18
Trueborn Vorpal
Social Junker

Need more names to complete the rest. The remainders are:
Metaphysicist
Demoiselle
Dr. Ol Raw

As soon as more people sign up, I'll add them to the end of the list in order.

And as soon as I hear back from the first group, I'll implement the changes. I just don't want anyone becoming a mod and not knowing about it for a few days - ya know? I was thinking I might also make a thread in SG about it to let people know of the changes that are to come. They don't need a say in it, but I like to keep people informed.

I'm going to university on the 22nd and I might be without internet access for a while, as well as most likely not having too much free time when I do get it. I know jack's a UK mod as well and around a lot so it shouldn't be too much of a problem, and I will be able to get on Totse, but you might want to bump me back a month or two in the rotation.

I'm glad to see the rotation is finally going to be implemented :) It should be interesting to see how it plays out in SG...

I'll volunteer for a shift, as long as it is isn't until October, as I'm moving at the end of the month and not sure what my internet access will be like for those first two weeks or so...

Also, I Raw's name on the list, but I thought he was quitting? Or did he change his mind?

I was wondering the same thing, actually. I never heard from him whether or not he was leaving for sure. I guess since he's neglected to tell us, that means he's already left...

Meta, I'll switch you for Mr.Happy. That means that because you're in the first batch, you'll only be in for a month instead of two. Though I guess it doesn't really matter since you've been there for a while now.

Can someone get ahold of Mokothar and let him know that he's up? Or at least point him to the thread.

Edit: I'll keep an updated version of the list at the head of this thread. I'm also going to add it to the heap of stickies.

And just so everyone knows. Please do NOT take the "I'm gonna whip this forum into shape" approach in moderating SG. It's easier to moderate by simply watching and stepping in when needed. Being a nazi will only make your job harder. Being overly strict will make people want to piss you off - don't give in. If you're being too strict, I might send you an email to let you know. No biggie, I'd just rather not have complaints about mods in my inbox. Also, I'd like to help people improve their moderating style when needed. So don't be afraid to ask your fellow mods for help on situations.

you have mastered the art of not letting it get too personal.

You make it sound like it's some difficult thing to do.

It's really simple: You just realize it's the internet and especially here at Totse that the ones who give the most problems are almost always either some pubescent virgin or some overweight female with self esteem issues. And as such what they say means less than nothing.

I mean, you wouldn't let yourself be dragged into an argument with some 15 year old little shit irl.

Or would you?

BTW the SG regulars like it when you give a closing post, so they know who to bitch at when their threads been locked/know why there threads been locked (unless it's very obvious).

On a related note, if you do see a thread asking why a thread was close, I usually reply that such questions should be asked in an email, then lock the thread.

Sure, you could answer in the thread, but that only encourages more people to make such threads.

All of which can be avoided if you say why you closed a thread.

Of course, I am very guilty of not doing just that. But than at this point most people don't bother me about why anymore and if they do it is almost always in an email now.

And speaking of emails, you really need to answer all emails [except pure flame ones, that is], even if it is angry and full of insults, if they have a valid question or point, you should address it. Else you'll find assholes like Quantrille bringing it up every chance they get.

Right Yoyo? [That was meant as a good natured jab. I, too, have been plagued by that prick for months now].

And, no matter how much someone personally pisses you off, do not ban them unless they break a rule.

I know some of you may think that is hypocritical of me, but I stand by every ban I've made. I've never banned someone only because they piss me off.

There's probably more, but that's the most important stuff I can think of atm.

Ok, I didn't think of this last night but I'll need someone to replace you.

This goes for anyone who decides that they don't want to mod SG during mid-term. Their spot will go to anyone who's currently on the list or has applied. The closer to the front of the list you are, the higher priority you have (in case more than one person really wants to do it). If nobody volunteers by Saturday (or within a few days for future incidents), I'll just choose someone, but I'd prefer to have someone volunteer so that I know you're enthusiastic about it. However when you agree to do this, you're agreeing to only take a partial term and you forfeit your spot in the list (depending on how long the partial term is).

This weekend I'll write a cool program to keep track of all this shit for me. At first I was thinking that the list would be pretty easy to maintain. But with all of the stipulations we've applied for how the rotation is to work, it looks like it would be much easier to do the following: Enter everyone's name into the database, have it keep track of how many times they've moderated, when, and for how long. Use that information to determine whether or not the mod is "experienced" (explained in the OP) and when they are next due to moderate (given that they want their name in the rotation). Then I could even make a cool webpage that shows this information to the public so that people know when the shift will be and who's next in line. Also, it will be a lot easier to compensate for partial terms. Just have 4 moderator "slots" and have each one on its own timer.

Anyway, just a thought. If I get a chance, I'll script it out and see how I like it. Bottom Line: In the mean time, someone needs to volunteer for Jack's spot while I fix the list :p - Jack, just stand around, look good, and act like you're modding SG.

I couldn't agree more. I see a shitload of threads that should be locked or moved all the time. Well, maybe not a shit load, but a lot of them at any rate.

If these new Mods aren't going to enforce the rules, people are going to expect it to stay that way. And that will just make it all that much harder when I come back in. I will have to start all over with people saying I'm too harsh and that I should let all of their shit threads stay, etc, etc, etc...

They need to get off their ass[es] and start moderating the place the right way - or make room for those of us who will.

Actually, that last post of mine was a joke.

You get that people: A JOKE!

I figured it would raise the ire of a few people.

As to what I really was going to say...:

I do agree with what Sybil said - to a certain extant. That is, I do see more than a few threads that I would move or lock, if I were still a Mod there. However I feel that the Mods there now should be free to Mod it as they see fit; the same way we were able to do so.

If I see something I really feel strongly about, I bring it up in IRC, but that hasn't happened much at all.

I fully expected things to get like this, at least at first, when I left, and while the new Mods get a feel for the place. And I fully expected the users there to test the new limits, so to speak. I think that soon enough it will find its new balance point.

I for one haven't been all too active lately, mostly because of my exams in two weeks.
Any chance I could get transferred to IFIOTW after the next rotation?

I could be wrong, but took his meaning to be that he would like to be added to IFIOTW after his rotation in SG is over.

That's what I meant yes.
BB hardly needs any moderation at the moment, but hey sure, if you don't need any help over there, I'll just stick with being a regular patron

Is there actually A mod watching SG? I mean, in some threads the thread starter is actually request for his/her topic to be moved and nothing happens, I see fucking shit threads, HB shit threads that just keep standing there. Threads with maybe 3-4 words in it. Please SG mods, I don't want to tell you how to do your "job" but if you volunteered for the mod position I expect you did it because you intended to actually mod there, and not just to be a mod?

Well, I know I sure don't have the time to actually watch SG in real time, but I stop in a various times throughout the day. :)

Please dont send any crap to OI. Having some problems with people coming from SG who think that OI is SG and that it's totally fine to spam and shit here.

It's making me grumpy :(
