I'm so drunk right now (read, don't lock) [long]
It's 3:31 AM at the start of my writing this. I've been up since 6 AM, to catch the eclispse on my morning jog.
Sorry, to all the mods, this is sort of my early-mid-life crisis, if you feel it belongs elsewhere, please move, but I love S&A and it's my been good to me, so I can't cheat on it and post my life problems elsewhere, here we go.
Today was frosh (orientation, but think more booze) week at university. I have a lot of reasons for why I did it (mainly, my frosh sucked ass, wanted a new one). It was going pretty well up until around 8 PM. I woke up at 6 AM as usual for my morning jog. All was well. I'm pretty serious about boxing (I'm an amateur boxer) so I figured I'd be fine against the pressures of booze and such), but that's why I'm writing this story.
After my jog, I got to university, and join the froshees and frosh leaders in the fun (doing a little bit of both here and there). Anyway, I made it most of the day without giving in to my temptations.
Just a note, I used to be the BIGGEST party animal there was. I'd drink, smoke, drug-up as much as possible before, then I went clean all summer, been 2 months 100% sober. I've also started getting serious about boxing in the mean time, my endurance has improved greatly, etc, etc.
So today, at about 8 PM, we've got a boring presentation, blah blah blah, I hit this guy's hookah. Pretty fun. Next thing I know, I'm smoking a cigarette (I only had 1 at this point). After the show (about 11 PM) we head to the bar. I'm all alone drinking a beer, planning to have 1 then go home, sleep, and be rested for tomorrow. I see these 2 guys having a smoke, so being in a mood of friendship, I ask to bum a smoke and light up. These guys were awesome, they moved to my table, the next thing I know we're all drinking and smoking, talking about pretty profound truths, etc, etc.
So it's 3 AM, I bid good-bye to 1 of the guys, and I come home.
I realized though, very much thanks to them, that I've only got a few more years to enjoy myself, before I settle into the monotany that is the working world. Even if I did pursue my dreams of boxing, and supposing I was the next big thing, I'd make lots of money, and retire around 30-40 with millions of dollars (best case scenario). I'd still have abstained from drinking, smoking, and drugs for the next 10-20 years. Not only that, a lot of fun is had because of drinking, smoking, and drugs.
I'm missing out of a big part of my childhood because I'm not out there being normal. These guys helped me figure that out, one of them in particular helped me realize that life worthiness isn't measured in "number of chicks you've fucked", "money you've made", or anyting else, it's entirely about the fun you've had. If this is our only life, let's make the most of it for ourselves.
I think I've made the right choice to continue my awful ways. If boxing really meant that much to me, I wouldn't have left it over a drink with some good friends.
What do you guys think? Was it stupid of me to continue my habit of drugging myself? I try to keep a clear head and body, but it's hard, especially in university, and especially in this generation when everyone's smoking and drinking. I'm going to continue with what I'm doing now, but I'd like your thoughts on this. Please. Thanks.
Thanks for reading. No short version.

Re: I'm so drunk right now (read, don't lock) [long]
The boxing scene is kinda difficult to get into. If every good athlete out there got into professional stuff, there'd be a LOT more leagues and shit out there!
I agree with whoever told you life's measured on how much fun you have...Enjoy it...You're a long time dead and them potential millions of dollars ain't gonna mean shit to the big man upstairs!
My advice would be (coming from someone who still has the urge to run off and join the army) find something else you enjoy and go with that...But keep the boxing (cool sport and it'll keep you fitter than you would be without it whilst drinking and smoking) and just enjoy whatever comes your way.
It took me a while to realise that life's a good fucking laugh just ripe for the taking. And I believe it was some of your advice helped me realise that.
Why waste all your affection on something that's only possible (boxing) and put your affections and passion into life itself so you enjoy it as much as you can?
Hope that makes sense...I'm drunk too! :D

Boxing...hmmm....
The best thing to do is find a college girl with a fully functioning box. She might just be able to slot you right in to her...'box'.

Can you not balance out the two?
Why should you give up on boxing...and why should you give up utterly on your 'fun'. I mean I can understand having to have a pretty strict hold on your alcohol/smoking intake if you have to keep fit, but can you not have one or two days off a week?

Exactly. To quote Voltaire:
"The perfect is the enemy of the good."
I take this to mean that if you strive to be "perfect" or in your case, an "absolute" athelete (thus abstaining from all drugs/sex/rocknroll), then you might miss out on all the good stuff along the way. Balance is the key :)

Personally i'd say screw the boxing and party it on down, but that's because i know i could never be happy with a life of abstinence. Maybe you're different, but i can't understand why anyone abstains from anything that gives them pleasure.

Re: I'm so drunk right now (read, don't lock) [long]
I used to hang out with some of Europshire's top thai boxers...i'm talking major league championship level, all full time pros.
All smoked and drank (never go partying with top martial artists..trust me on that).
But they rationed themselves. They'd stop smoking several weeks before a big match. They'd give their body time to recover from any alcohol abuse.
And believe me they ABUSED alcohol in the amounts I, as a world class Alki, find impressive.
One of them told me that alcohol remians in your body for up to 12 days (not sure if thats true) So they limited their heavy duty drinking bouts to once a fortnight.
Do the same.

I do kickboxing, absolutely no way professionally mind you, and I've found that my squishy squoshy mini beer belly doesent make me the most attractive of fighters, but that's about it.
Alcohol doesent automatically turn you into a slob in ten seconds flat.
,,Says the girl sitting infront of the computer in a dirty vest and a pair of my boyfriends pants.

The motto of my friends was 'Drink hard, train harder'.
They'd turn up with hangovers so bad that they could barely stand. They'd turn up the heating to full blast furnace and then do thai-boxy things like kicking scaffolding poles with their bare shins until they had sweated out all the intoxication.
Then go drinking again.
They don't make men like that any more.

Re: I'm so drunk right now (read, don't lock) [long]
I'm thanking all of you guys for helping me, and the mods for not closing it. In particular, Mr. Stabby summed up the arugment perfectly:
I can't understand why anyone abstains from anything that gives them pleasure.
I'm drunk again, but it's only 2:32 (I started drinking an hour earlier though :) Tonights party was sweet. I started out as a poor fucked waiting outside the door, but by the end of the night I was manning the kegs and shit, it pays to be social.
Anyway, I had a shitload of fun, met a shitload of chicks, and partied it up. Even winning a match against a 12-0 fucker didn't give me this much happiness. Sure, it was a lot harder than drinking and making friends, but it doesn't compare to the joy I get out of it.
I can't have both because I [was] on my way to the pros. I can't box anymore, knowing I could have beek making millions one day. I just can't. But I like drinking, so there are no problems. I've got some fucked up sort of pneumonia/bronchitis/etc but it's nothing a few tokes of weed can't fix. I got high tonight too, it was a pretty nice night.
I had a point. I think this is it:
If you've had more fun living a shit life than a boxer making millions, be happy. Who cares if you're famous and you leave behind a legacy everyone remembers, if you didn't have joy in your life, what was the point? Enjoy life while you've got it...your quantum theories can wait until you're retired.
In conclusion, alcohol is awesome, chicks are awesome [and slutty], and drugs are awesome. However, if your dreams are more awesome to you, PURSUE THEM. Don't settle for drugs and booze. Try both, then make a decision about where your life is going. CARPE DIEM!!!
[note: honestly, anybody who disagrees that drunk girls at parties are stupid, slutty, and easy, I'll take a video of my next party. It's impossible to NOT get laid if you bother to try. I didn't get anything because there were no bedrooms, but manning a keg gets you some nice privlidges and phone numbers.
Letting girls skip to the front of a line of people getting beer for a phone number or blowjob: priceless!

Honestly, this is what I've got to shift my focus on. If you realize you can get it without a good body or money, you're in pussy heaven.
From the Tao of Steve: "Am I supposed to remain celibate while I bask in like the warm glow of your annihilating contempt?"
I like you girls, and but until we're actually a steady couple, all else is fair game for the fucking.

Don't let substance abuse take over your life.
Yeah, it's fun as hell compared to the monotony of the 'real world', but a life of booze, drugs, and bill collectors will only make you resentful in the long run.
You're still young, get yourself into another field that pays the bills. Know where you want to stand on the socioeconomic scale, and start gunning for it.
Enjoy the atmosphere of college, but know when to step back and move on.

I'm not sure I could give up on hard excersize for the sake of overindulgence.
Drugs and alcohol are great but when you get up tomorrow their effects will be gone.
You'll enjoy this for a while, but then one day you'll wake up and realise that you're fat and saggy and that you've devoted so much of your life to partying you cant and dont want to do anything else.

No, the chances of you becoming a "big thing" in boxing is rare. You don't seem to have much drive, you have labeled yourself as a drug addict and a drunk, and last time I checked those two qualities aren't the shining reason guys become champions.
If you want to do something of value...sign up to be an organ donor, and then shoot yourself.
P.S. Why is yoyobek such a retard? The effects will wear off tomorrow? I think you are missing the entire reason people drink and do drugs, and DON'T exercise.

Relax, if we all ignore him, he'll go away. I'm not taking anything he said heavily (because I'm drunk) and also because I don't respect him. He can say whatever he wants, he carries no weight.
I think women are sort of more fucked when it comes to indulgence vs. the gym. A woman's main features are her face. If she's got a nice face, it makes up for a lot. Nobody wants SKINNY girls anymore. If you're overweight, you can hit the gym till you're happy with your weight, and then from them on it's just maintenance.
And everyone, respect the soldiers. Most of them are fighting, and willing to give up their lives so that someone important to them (brother, cousin, son, etc) doesn't have to. If it wasn't for them, we'd be back to conscription and then we'd all be fucked. They're giving up their lives for us.
Not to mention Carbon, I'd like to see you give a big "fuck you" to a soldier's face. That's what I thought.
Tonight was awesome, some dancing, some fucking, some partying, lots of drinking. Life is cool. Don't mix tequila with vodka.

He's got a point though.
If I had two soldiers, one who signed up for the ideals behind defending the Constitution and got bennies, and one that just wanted Uncle Sugar's college money and bonuses, I'd respect the former a lot more. Nasty volunteer work like that deserves a nod though, if only that.
Carbon, you should show a little more respect to people you've never even met. "Not the brightest group of guys" is garbagemouth, unless you're ex-mil and you've done the work and met the people. There ARE dumbasses, but by and large, you meet the exact same people doing everything else you do in life because soldiers are still citizens.

Dude, the soldiers are "dumbasses" because they may not know calculus or biology or statistics, but they know a shitload about guns, tanks, tactics, etc. They know things imperative to their job, same as any other job.
And yes, just like you get doctors signing up for the money, or for helping others, you get soldiers signing up for honor, and some signing up to shoot people (and cats when they're bored).
If anything, hate the police man. Most people will be understanding of that.

I don't think so man. I'm keeping boxing, but I'm gonna keep getting smashed. I'll just do boxing for me rather than for the money. I'll practice and keep at it, but just like with guitar, I'll do it for myself, not hoping to make it big and whatnot. It brings me fun, both guitar and boxing, and that's enough for me.
And booze and drugs bring me more fun, so they're staying.

Tell me, what have you done with your life? Definitely NOT fucking any women thats for sure.
