a poster's thought
Yeah, Meta sucks, we all know it. But the real problem with this website isn't overzealous or unfair moderating as much as it's negligent and aloof administration. They simply don't care about the quality of the forums, and don't hesitate to abuse their power or neglect their duties when it suits them.
Keep in mind too that I'm not blaming Jeff necessarily even though he is the chief admin. I'm blaming his underlings who he has entrusted to maintain this site in his stead according to his ideals. Sadly, they often evoke this same misplaced trust in order to justify their frequently biased and unfair decisions.
This centers around the recent mass bans made by MLoR, along with the subsequent re-ban of this user with the the reason of "sick of this shit".
Thoughts, questions, concerns?

Re: a poster's thought
The conversation that was posted around (although mainly in various IRC channels) was very hurtful and I can understand how MLoR was upset. I made sure to delete anything that came up in SG (which was only one thread) because it was totally uncalled for - BUT, I don't believe banning a large number of people was the way to go about it. I was also slightly put off when I suggested to infract anyone that posted the convo to cause an instant ban and that I was given 'permission' to do so.
I do think SOMETIMES we (thats mods/admins) overstep some rules in each others forums, to varying degrees. I don't mind the odd taking 'advantage' of certain trivial things in forums (such as, HB mods editing posts of their HB regulars for laughs because that's the nature of the forum). But, there is a limit, and the regulars DO NOTICE when cheeky mods get away with stuff continuously , especially in places like SG, where the rules are vague. Expecting to post shit in SG, and getting away with it because you're a mod doesn't always fly (at least not with me) and in the past I have been known to ignore the tag under the posters name and deal with the thread (generally moving it, I'm not that much of a cunt :p )

Re: a poster's thought
I agree Kate. The past week has seen more than a couple of Mod made threads which would have been closed had they been made by anyone else - or moved them. And while I too will give some extra leeway to another Mod's thread, I haven't hesitated to move or lock a thread that just had no business at all being there.
I mean, I get called enough names as it is, I don't need hypocrite added to the list.

There is an embarrassing textfile, an MSN conversation log, floating around that involves MLoR and a totsean. The subsequent joking and posting of it led to bans. There was nothing within this file, or within the jokes, to warrant the reprisals.
I won't go into more detail than that, for the sake of privacy. However, I'm sure you'll hear plenty more about it sometime in the not so distant future. It inspires a response from the reader.

Re: a poster's thought
Now when you say mass bannings, how many are we talking about?
I mean, I know the thread[s] in question. I was there when the first one appeared in SG and it was hard deleted still wish Jeff would let Mods hard delete, but that's for another thread]. But I only knew about that one and a second one some time later.
I didn't know abut any further problems with it, let alone hear about mass bannings. I'm hearing about all of that in IRC. And IRC being what it is, I'm sure I am hearing a highly exaggerated version. So I'm curious as to know what the numbers really were. The number I'm hearing in IRC is 30, which can't be the right number.
Can it?

I'm behind Mlor on this one. People that cause such unpleasant serious shit need to be dealt with.
And if people dont like how totse is run, how the owner runs it, I'm sure that they can allways fuck off and find another forum to spew their mindless drivel over.

Re: a poster's thought
Meta, MLoR said he'd made a total of 40 bans on IRC. Quite a few of them were multiple accounts of the same four or five posters, and quite a few of them have since been overturned.
The account of the poster he had the leaked conversation with has been banned, as has cosmo's account, which I think is a shame. Both are good posters who've been here more than three years. They don't show up on the member list any more, don't know if that means they're deleted or banned.
I can understand MLoR's reaction, it was embarrassing and he wouldn't have expected the person to share the information they did. But I do agree with Euda that there wasn't actually anything in the logs that was actually grounds for a ban, no information that could lead to him being found or anything. It's like the thing that happened between me and Nerd Fangs; embarrassing as anything, and it pissed me off, but I couldn't ban him for it.

Re: a poster's thought
I don't know EXACTLY what happend, but I guess that MLoR's reaction might be a bit over done.
On the other hand, regulars will never be satisfied. In their eyes, we will always either be over moderating or slacking...

Euda, don't you DARE fucking accuse me of re-banning cosmo. I wasn't the one who fucking pulled that one. I unbanned him when you pretty much ordered me to, and left it at that.

Gee, lookie there.
And don't bitch at me about Braunschweiger vagina's current temp ban, that was of Happy's doing, for his posting of child pornography.
Next time don't get your fucking facts twisted, and stop searching around for reasons to fucking bash me.

Who did ban cosmo the second time, and what for? I can't find his profile in the member list so I can't see if there's an infraction or what.
EDIT: Aha, there we are.
...why was he perm-banned?
Jive, I'll fill you in on that in IRC.

Re: a poster's thought
I didn't accuse you of anything MLoR. The question of cosmo's subsequent ban was a seperate issue I brought up within the post.
From my understanding, "sick of this shit" isn't a ban-worthy offense. For example, Digital isn't banned.
Bans for reasons such as this undermine and destroy the concept of community on which totse's forums are built.

Re: a poster's thought
I would like to know why cosmo is banned. I'm not complaining that he's banned (yes, I do hate the guy) but if it was under unfair circumstances, that's aside from the point. As far as "infract them worth 10 points to get an instant ban" I think that's clearly an abuse of power. The infractions are what they are and have the point value they do for a reason.
So before anyone grabs their torches and pitchforks, why don't we find out why he was banned?

Re: a poster's thought
Separately to this, I was talking talking to reject, who was recently banned, and he said he was banned because of this, (http://www.totse.com/community/showthread.php?t=2043403) he asked me to have a look at it. I checked out the thread and bans were threatened for everybody making uncorroborated statements accusing DUC of scamming, or whatever it was (acidmelt's post, #76). Cosmo was posting in that thread as well, so I'm guessing it's for the same thing. Lysergicmindset (the thread starter) was also banned.

Unless physical violence was actually threatened, I don't think so...
I don't know what the specifics are, so I won't comment on them, but in a generalized answer, I would say that verbal/written "harassment" is not the same as "threatening with violence". Annoying to be sure, but not violent.

Re: a poster's thought
MLoR, you are now in a position of power, I have no opinions on the matter in this thread for it does not concern me, but do not use profanity towards your moderators regardless of the issue. To me and possibly others it shows that you are just another immature prick. I am not calling you that, I am warning what you might be viewed as. Please change your diplomatic dialogue so that I may continue to respect you.

I hear you on this. I almost said something, but I didn't think it was that necessary. But I agree. I always try to mind my words as best I can when talking to both regulars and moderators on totse. I rarely use profanity unless it's been used towards me first.
Of course the counter-argument is always: this is totse, what did you expect?

Re: a poster's thought
Ok, so, say you're being harassed by a totse member, constantly and persistently. It's not your generic totse insults "ur a fag" ect, it's serious, it's nasty, and it's insulting something very close to you.
And that's meant to be tolerated why..?
If we're just meant to allow that sort of shit to happen, then we should allow every sick video and pic people put up of Metas daughter. We should allow every dirty sordid secret of Euda's to be told by The Evil Bitch Who Shall Not Be Mentioned.
This isnt just bullying, it's a disgusting, aggressive form of harassment, and yes, a form of threat.
And I dont see how anyone here can be defending a childish, nasty, poor poster, over a very good, much respected Administrator.

Re: a poster's thought
Motherfucking YES i banned cosmo. 100 per fucking cent it was me and i am about to do it again for ban evasion. Here is the rule "Dont cause grief to the admin" and he has done that voer 4 times in the past 30 days. You are not admins so you dont have this right. I however do. I have had it with dealing with his stupid shit and he is done here. I dont give a fuck if euda and jeb and whoever else is around that likes him. They can join him for all I care. Im sick of this stupid shit. oh this isnt how totse is supposed to be, oh its just not right that my fucking troll ass fagget friends can post now, wah wah. fucking cry to someone that cares. you have 2 choices. one is to admit that they are trolls and pissed off the administration for the last time or 2, join them. thats how it goes and thats how its going to be.

Re: a poster's thought
I actually agree. Cosmo purposely starts fights and pushes the line in order to get attention. He loves pissing off moderators and tries his hardest to make them ban him for borderline issues. I've dealt with him doing this several times in the past and I am right behind acidmelt when he says that he's sick of it. I generally ignore him when he bothers me, but that doesn't mean I'm going to fend for him when he starts pissing other people off. My opinion, for what it's worth, is that he is a troll who purposely causes trouble for mods and admins.
Edit: However I do think that cosmo should be unbanned at some point. I talked to acidmelt on IRC the other day (before his last post and before cosmo allegedly evaded ban) and he said he'd unban him. I'm not sure if that's still the case, but if it were up to me, I would have banned him for about a week or two, not permanently.
