Default My computer doesn't turn on when I press the power button.

This is a weird problem. I wake up this morning and I press the power button on my desktop machine which is connected to a power surge. It doesn't turn on. No fans, no noises or anything, like if it was unplugged. Everything else connected to the power surge works, including my printer and monitor.

I've tried swapping the power cords which I know for a fact works because it works on another computer which I tested. In the past I've had this problem but that was because I went on vacation and the machine probably dusted up. But this time it's different because I used the same machine yesterday and it works fine. I didn't update any firmware or settings on the computer, so that can't be the problem.

It's an HP Pavillion with Pentium 4 3.0GHz and 1 gig of ram. I've had this machine for a little less than 2 years and the only thing I replaced was the video card.

Thanks!!

Could either be the power supply or the power switch/wiring.

Remove the side panel of the case and unplug the big 20-pin power connector leading to the motherboard. Then short the green pin on the top row with any black pin - the PSU and your HDs should all spin up if it's working OK. If nothing happens, your PSU is dead.

How do I do what you just told me to do? I've located the 20-pin power connector but is there a picture guide or something to help me with this? Thanks alot for your advice.

Alright man thanks!! I'm gonna try that out right now. Just stick two ends of a paper clip to the ends of a green wire and any black wire right?
