Is their any way to fix my dad?
This probably doesn't belong here, but i dont know where the hell it does.
Ok, so me and my father. We don't get along very well. Our idealogies are completely different. Opposite you may say.
He is extremely closed-minded, willfully ignorant, and arrogant. He is a christian and i am a spiritualist/hindu, and today we had an argument. He started to critisize my beliefs and basically say that his are better. He claims that he knows all about my beliefs and his, when in fact he doesn't even know the most fundamental thing about either. Even though i'm probably hundreds of times smarter, he ended up winning because his ignorance made me lose my composure and i got pissed off. I told him straight up facts and gave unrefutable arguments, but his stubborness prevailed. I tell him that he can believe whatever the hell he wants, but leave me the fuck alone, and stop trying to get me to go to church and shit.
I'm a happy person, and he is very disgruntled. I tell him that he should only hold on to his beliefs if they serve him. His only excuse for holding on to them are tradition. I gave an unrefutable argument against that as well, but he gives the most bullshit responses ever. It's worse than arguing with a retard.
Theirs no end to his stupidity.
He drinks alot due to stress he says. I tell him that theirs other better ways to relieve stress, even chemically and that alcohol will only make it worse. He thinks that marijuana kills and all that bullshit he's been fed by government propaganda.
He also smokes alot, and he's too weak to quit. He denies help, and even common sense ways to help him. Along with all of this he has a shit diet, wears underwear, and even holds in his sneezes. Sometimes he does things that make no sense, and im really worried.
How can i open his eyes, and make him change his ignorant and self-destructive ways?

My argument in his beliefs of keeping up traditional practices:
Why would you not want to keep up with evolution? If something does not serve you, then give it up. You should do what works best for you, and not something that doesn't, just because it's traditional. For example, if it is a tradition to use an obsolete, antique peice of technology, but you have the option of choosing to get a new peice of technology that is more efficient and less expensive, where is the common sense in choosing what is traditional. Same logic applies to everything, including religions.

Re: Is their any way to fix my dad?
Theres no point in arguing with these people. They're too brainwashed. If you still live with your parents, then he has a good hold on your life. So if he says anything about your religion, just reply "whatever you say" or "ok". Just remember, you're not hurting your dignity, you know how much of an idiot he really is.

There's nothing wrong with your dad, there's only a problem with your perception of your dad. If you weren't so arrogant you'd be able to learn something from him, because you can learn from anyone.

If I'm not mistaken research has shown that smoking does not inhibit blood circulation but rather helps it. I remember reading a couple articles on wired in regards to that subject and how a nicotine like substance is being tested for diabetics to increase the blood flow. They were also talking about how smokers tend to develop cancer and die so quickly as a result of this.
But now that I'm completely side tracked with your father you might want to try and point out the errors in his logic as he judges you and the obvious bull shit teachings that he may try to evangelize you with.

Why does it matter if he lowers his sperm? Is it a custom where you're from to have several kids? Smoking=Bad, Shit diet=Bad, Holding in Sneezes=Bad?, Lower Sperm=Who Cares? Nobody likes kids anyway, and it's not like having a low sperm count will kill him, or give him a heart attack, or lung disease, etc.

Re: Is their any way to fix my dad?
Ah... where to begin?
I am first reminded of the story (anectdote) of the child who at 14 pontificated about the overwhelming ignorange of his parents. The same child was totally amazed, at age 21, at how much they had learned in just 7 short years.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a child, at any age, hating some of the things that their parents do. That is pretty much what the parent/child dynamic is designed to do: Pit one's ideas and ideologies against the other. As much as both sides despise it, that is really an essential part of the maturing process for both the parents and the children.
There is, however, at the same time absolutely nothing acceptable about hating one's parents. They are the ones who brought you into this world; who raised, sheltered and nuritured you into the person you have become. You may not believe that they did any of this through love on their part. And in some cases that may be marginally true. But for the most part, were it not for their love, you would not be posting this thread.
Your father is NOT broken. The relationship between you and your father may be in serious need of repair, or major maintenance; but neither he nor you need a complete overhaul. You think he needs to be 'fixed' because he does not accept your perceptions on life, philosophy, or whatever. If you could open your mind to his point of view, you would clearly see that he feels the same way about your perceptions of the world, truth and etc.
I put my father in the ground about six months ago. For the last four or five years of his life he was a major pain in the ass: alsheimers, incontinence, you name it. I had to put up with all of that crap. This has nothing to say about the abuse I suffered at his hand for most of my formative years.
But today, as I have for many, many years, I credit most of my better qualities to the traits I inherited from him. And right now I would give almost anything to have just one more day to spend with him.
So, in answer to your question: No; there is no way to fix your dad. And even if there were (assuming he was broken) it is not your place to make any such attempt. Your best bet is to learn to live and let live.
You will be much happier in the long run.

It's not a dad thing, as a teenage kid I can honestly say that we my friends bring these stories to me, I say, "You're parents should've knocked your ass out." They look at me weird, and I live with the sense of silent knowledge I have that I was brought up in a house with discipline far too strong, and it is that discipline that allowed me to make proper decisions.
Really wish they'd have been like that on my brother, though...

Re: Is their any way to fix my dad?
There's just no easy way to say this without being rude, but whatever.
OP, it's religion, chances are we're all wrong about it, but that's not the point. The point is your dad has been under this religion his entire life, and there's no way that you, his dumbass teenage son, is going to convince him that all the years of worship he's put in were "pointless".
Your "irrefutable" argument is also completely ratarded. Since when has any religion ever been more "efficient" or "less expensive" than any other? As far as I can tell, every religion tries to be the best, but not one of them is known for being any better than another.
Basically, if you don't like his religion, then there ain't a fucking thing you can do about it. Tough shit.
But if he doesn't like your religion, (which he damn well shouldn't because you've betrayed him by rejecting his values and beliefs before you've even left the house), then as long as you're living under his roof, you either have to at least pretend to listen to what he says, or avoid the subject altogether.
And trying to get him to stop drinking, smoking, and wearing underwear? Smoking I could see, but it ain't gonna be you that gets him to quit.
Unless he's harming others by drinking, I don't see the problem.
And you can't tell a man to stop wearing underwear, because underwear is needed for many situations.
Those are my two cents.

Re: Is their any way to fix my dad?
Alright, where to begin...
Let me start by saying that I know what you're dad is about. I have grown up in a strong evangelical household my entire life, both of my parents have been missionaries and I have lived in several countries because of it. With that being said, I myself am an agnostic and they respect my beliefs.
Here are some points that have been mentioned but I will elaborate on, and some points that are new.
To start, let's go with the drinking and smoking. The Bible says that your body is a temple and that you should not do anything to harm it. If you prefer that I cite these with the biblical verse then you are going to have to wait till I get home and have access to a Bible. If you want to show your dad that he is being hypocritical, call him out on this. The Bible also explicitly says that you should not drink to the point of drunkenness, even to the point where it changes your mind frame. There are scores of verses with this teaching. If he believes that alcohol and tobacco are acceptable, he would be hypocritical to even deny himself a narcotic, because he himself is taking drugs already.
Now let's focus on your attitude. You must realize you are being extremely hypocritical. Statements like:
"I'm probably a hundred times smarter" and
"unrefutable arguments" (spelt irrefutable actually)
just make you seem like an ass. Honestly, your father is doing the exact same thing you are. You claim to be Hindu, and yet you view yourself in an extremely bright light while claiming your father is in the dark. Don't you understand that he views you in the same way? How can you progress when you simply view him as ignorant and yourself as brilliant? It will not work.
Furthermore, as a spiritualist, you should realize that religions are all beautiful, and all contain truths that we can take away with us even if we choose not to follow them. Do not be angry against his faith, be angry against his ignorance. Christianity is a beautiful thing, as are all religions, it is simply North American society that likes to focus on what's close to home. I've lived in Muslim countries, and I know for a fact that some people view Islam as archaic and blind, and view Christianity as new and revolutionary. It's all about your point of view.
You see... that's the critical part. Your point of view is too skewed right now to understand where your father is coming from. And chances are, his is just as skewed as yours. There will be no "fixing" of your father without you "fixing" yourself.
I hope this helps in any way possible.

Theirs undeniable evidence supporting my beliefs, that even I have witnessed myself.
Christianity, is just no-doubt a man-made religion made to control the masses. Jesus' teaching weren't wrong, but what they teach now are not his teachings.
Why the fuck should he not respect others beliefs? He's limiting my free-will, by not letting me choose my own religion.
Man's mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions, and I cannot lie about such a thing. If I did, I would also have to go to church. Which is time wasted when I could be doing something productive.

Please
but i doubt he would do anything about it. I've done things like this about other things like about his diet. Saying that gluttony is one of the seven deadly sins. He didn't care.
Yes, maybe i've exaggerated, and im not a hundred times smarter, and i've realized way before you that i've spelt irrefutable wrong.
Maybe your right though. I'll try a different approach.
I hope this helps in any way possible.
thanks for the help.

Re: Is their any way to fix my dad?
To the OP, usually adults are dead set in their mindset. Adult's minds have been shaped and molded all their lives and can be painfully difficult to change. I feel for you, though. Although I love my dad to death, I sometimes find him to be an ignorant prick who I have lost respect for. An example was when he was making fun of the Arab people after 9/11. People are people, and every group has their bad apples. If he ever realizes this, then I will be able to respect him again but until then...

Re: Is their any way to fix my dad?
I was almost at the bottom of the first page when my tl;dr kicked in.
My 2 cents:
When I was a teenager, I was always right. My parents were always wrong, and trying to teach me or seemingly force their religious views on me was an absolute disgrace.
I remember on more than one occasion, hearing "If it seems like everyone in your life has a problem with you, could it be possible that the problem is with you and not them?"
This just made me more angry.
Now, I look back on that scentence and it makes so much sense. I havent gave up in the beliefs I had as a teenager (well, most of them) and I havent taken ANY of the religious opinions my parents expressed on-board... I do, however, respect them now.
I guess what also comes with age is the realisation that you have to give everyone a wide berth and be prepared to let people preach what you consider ignorance.
You may be right, but it doesn't mean someone is going to see this just because you say so... it also doesn't mean that you should try to force what you believe on anyone.
I am soon to be a father, and the dilema I have now is should I even express my agnostic beliefs to my child...

God; no (LOL at how I used "god"). If he asks for it then talk it to your offspring. If not, don't. Believe me; parents can talk too much and you don't want to fall into that trap.

Thread starter, how old are you?
In experience, I've found that arguing with a father is useless, pointless, and maddening. Regardless of your oppinions, wishes or beleifs, whatever he says has to be right.
Get the fuck out of there before he destroys your mind.

I guess there's no point in getting into an argument about this, but he's not really a socialist, and would be almost be middle of the road for a lot of Europe. Have you read anything by Karl Marx or contemporaries? I'm most interested in Connollyist socialism, but a lot of it isn't applicable outside of Ireland.

yes I have read The COmmunist Manifesto.
Kucinich is the only decent Socialist with a small chance in the US. Unfortunately there's plenty of people who hate him for that stuff...

Re: Is their any way to fix my dad?
James Connolly was an Irish Republican Socialist that founded the ICA, the ISRP and was one of the leaders of the Easter Rising. He was executed in 1916, but many of his ideas are still relevant in Ireland, and some of his stuff still relevant outside of Ireland too. It's unfortunate socialism hasn't really been popular in the US since the 20s, a much more peaceful and "free" (since you love that word there) world could have been possible.

Re: Is their any way to fix my dad?
It's not a dad thing, as a teenage kid I can honestly say that we my friends bring these stories to me, I say, "You're parents should've knocked your ass out." They look at me weird, and I live with the sense of silent knowledge I have that I was brought up in a house with discipline far too strong, and it is that discipline that allowed me to make proper decisions.
Really wish they'd have been like that on my brother, though...
lol, I'm 16 and I already know I'm probably going to end up smacking my kids. I'll freely say that if they talk to me like the op I'll fucking punch him in the mouth. I've been raised in a free life really, my parent's are extremly lenient and laid-back, but I've learned many things from my father, especially not to disrespect him. So, what I have to say to you, OP, is to leave him alone. No reason to hate your parents unless they're beating you day and night with baseball bats, oh wait no, bags of oranges(Doesn't leave bruises) and telling you that you're a worthless waste of space. If you don't like him then move, if you're 16 you can get a job making just enough for a bit of food and a place to stay, and don't make excuses as to not being able to or some shit. :P

Well it was a longtime ago and the situation was very heated back then.
Actually most of the 'saffa''s I've known (and I used to hang around with the sort of Taal-speaking Afrikaaners who think Terre-Blanche is a godless liberal) have found that song rather funny.

If you were as intelligent as you try and portray youd realise that neither your views nor his are inherently right or wrong. As long as his viewpoints dont affect your lifestyle then you shouldnt be whingeing about it to him. And if they are and you arent willing to put up with it seeing as he's raised you then maybe you should move out.

Here in Arizona, at minimum wage part-time you'll be making about $600 a month. That's enough for rent at about $400 a month for a studio and $0 - $200 for food. At full-time minimum wage you'll make about $900 a month. You get a job then move out, it's that simple. If the parents won't let you get the job, get one without them knowing, get your first paycheck at the end of the week and get an apartment, around here it's only $100 down to get an apartment. So, unless you're living in New York and can't afford $2500 a month, stop complaining and get your own damn place to stay if you don't like your parents.

Judging by your obvious grammatical errors -- including improper use of the word 'their' in your title -- and the fact that you follow a false-religion while your father is a Christian, I think it's safe to assume that he is smarter than you.
Right now you're following a path of stupidity that leads straight to hell.
You're not comming back as an ant or a cow. You get one life, if you don't accept Jesus as your lord and saviour within that life then you will be lost forever.
Hopefully, you will learn better English, and more importantly stop following the lies of Hinduism and embrace the love of Jesus Christ.

Ain't no way to prove a teenager wrong. They are always right. Part of growing up is realising you were wrong about almost everything.
Which is why I, as a teen, accept that I understand one thing, that I understand nothing.
Still, no matter how little understand, if someone is speaking from their ass, I don't care how old they are, I'm going to call bullshit.

That's basically what it is. If you're a teenager and you're schooling some adult on a particular subject, they'll just insist that they're right and that you're some dumb punk kid who thinks he knows everything.
Once people hit a certain age, their views about the world tend to become pretty impregnable. It's like, the older people become, the more biased they get. I'm in my mid 20's now, but if some high school kid tells me something, I'm not going to discriminate against his age and automatically disregard what was said due merely due to the age of the person that said it.
