I used to drive up to London late at night to see the girlfriend. Thats about a 2 1/2 hour drive and once you get out of Norfolk and from behind the tractor or sugar beet lorry infront of you, then its motorway all the way.

I learnt to drive on the German Autobahns and sometimes..just sometimes.. I *cough* forget *cough* about the ridiculous british speed limits on motorways (70 mph).

Truth be told, 3 AM would normally find me driving faster than my Guardian Angel can probably fly.

My girlfriend was really worried that in the event of an accident that as I was still married that she wouldn't be informed or have any say in my treatment.

One night I stopped for coffee at a motorway service station and found they had a dog tag making machine.

I did some tags which gave her as the person to contact in the event of my landing in A&E (What we used to call 'Casualty' and americans call 'ER') and also noted she had Power Of Attorney and was my legal representative. Hung them on an old leather boot lace.

Not only did she like the look (personally I hate most forms of jewellery) but she made a point of insisting i wore them whenever I drove.

I think that cheap set of tags probably meant more to her than most other expensive gifts she's had. Its a good way of showing a girl how much she means to you. Especially if you indulge in dangerous activities like driving, walking across the road, eating at Burger King, shopping at Tesco's on pension day or are into totally retarded 'sports' like bungee jumping.

Unfortunately my wife also saw the tags and even though we were about to divorce I think in some ways that hurt her more than the fact I had found someone new.

Depending on what you do, you might spend a lot of time in military attire. Also, depending on location. If you're working out of JAG headquarters, it's fine to go out to a restaurant wearing your uniform.

Not to mention, the US military has the world's best Dress Uniforms. Navy, Air Force, Marines, hell, even the Army has great DUs. Having a wedding in full DU is awesome.

After I got out of A-School I quit wearing them. You couldn't have loose gear on the flight deck, so that was a deployment's worth of not wearing them.

I started wearing them again when I bought a motorcycle, thought it was a good idea, just in case. I wear my desert boots and cammies often, they're useful and comfortable.
