Anyways, anyone else ever notice how all [straight] girls can judge other girls on attractiveness, but [straight] guys can't judge other guys?
Like I know Brad Pitt is hot, but anywhere between him and guys who are obviously creepy motherfuckers, I can't tell. All of the girls I know can judge any other chick they see in a millisecond [although sometimes I don't agree with their ruling, but in general they're pretty accurate].

Why?

I know what you mean, I might see a guy who would be totally ugly to girls, but I would say he was a regular looking guy. One of my friends is bi and whenever he judges someone he gets wierd looks, because everyone assumes he is gay. I don't know why girls can say if a guy is good looking, but if I said my opinion I would get bitched at about being gay.

I know what you mean, I have a hard time. Usually you're able to tell to a certain point, but I think it's because girls aren't always in it for the looks, they want a nice personality in a guy also, whereas it's more common for a guy to go for a girl just for the looks.

Men and women both have very different ways of viewing things. Wom,en appriciate more in detail than men do because it's more important to our pleasure. According to some studies men appreciate touch more, whereas women appreciate praise more, praise goes into facial features, etc. it seems a pretty logical statement as well.

We look for what we know will please us in the future in our desired 'sex object', if you will, while judging somebody. Guys may want curves and slender features to make the sex better, where women may want soft eyes. I think the feminine nature is more competitive in depth than the male. Males care about building their bodies to maintain a certain testosterone level to rule out the menliness of other men around them. Where women seem to be more concious of more than just the bodies of their opponents.

I really don't know of a concrete explanation. I just know for a fact that men and women take different things in account, and it is my belief, according to the above statements, that females pay closer attention to physical details/attributes, and they're more self-concious, jealous, and aware of other women.

Edit: Also, if a male were to judge another male the way women judge women it'd be considered 'gay' which would degrade their manlihood immensly, the thing they depend on most in getting lucky.

Perhaps it's to do with men not thinking about appearance as a trivial thing or way of living. More of a way of judging what they should shag. There has been less of an emphasis on men taking care of their appearance through the ages, you see.

Then again, it might be to do with repression of anything considered homosexual. I know women are less "funny" about the whole gay thing.

And for the people saying it's because guys are more into looks than personality-That seems to be the opposite of what this proves. Women can judge twice the amount of people men can as far as looks, which makes it quite obvious they're more into looking good and how others look. Men don't have the ability to judge their own kind I suppose because in the wild, it wouldn't matter. Getting food, water, and shelter would. Women ended up staying home and caring for young and the home. This led to the female desire, as with any animal of any species, to focus more on attracting a mate.

Men are supposed to be the more dominant species, I'm not saying that we all believe it today but whether or not it's bluntly implied, I believe it remains true. Women aren't expected to meet up to all the expectations that men are. If a man were to judge another, like I said before, it would degrade his manliness, because he's actually caring about looks and appearal. Women are supposed to care about those things because they're superficial and unintelligable and it doesn't require as much thought and effort.

That's just a guess though. It sounds extremely sexist, but I'm a female. I don't necessarily believe all of these sterotypes, but I think most people still do and it's been a huge influence in our society and remained a part of it whether or not we realize it.

I can't remember the reason behind it but I once saw a study that found only 25% of men can accurately judge the physical attractivenesss of other men. it was something to do with the way the wiring is in the brain. They also found that average looking people are seen as more attractive when they're in the company of hotties.

Many straight women obsess about their own looks more than most guys do, which is maybe why they can accurately and fairly heterosexually judge other ladies' looks - they can compare people.

Because they have a vagina.

It probably doesn't help that I've wondered about the old 'uality for years (pretty happy with women though and don't really have any intentions of trying otherwise) but I find it's fairly easy to judge, though I often get it wrong. It's like I'll walk into a room and work out where I stand in terms of looks/attractiveness as a male amongst the others, often feeling I'm quite high on the list unless it's of a fringe sort of movement i.e. the guys are all heavy metal piercing/tattooed types in which case the girls could all be into that sort of guy and I'm too regular for them.

From my understanding, girls' brains are wired so that we notice and appreciate details of physical appearance more so than men. That's also why a man can walk into a messy house and think it looks fine whereas a woman will walk into the same house and instantly zero in on a mess and start fussing over it.

Also, girls totally dress up for other girls, whether they realise it or not. So all the girls get dressed up and then run around judging each other while the men just think: "That girl is hot, that girl isn't" versus "Ugh, that colour is horrible on her!"

And girls wont be called gay if they comment on another girl's looks.

Actually, I have no problem judging other guys. I can tell when a guy would be considered attractive or not. Every other guy who says they don't are simply being ignorant.

To me, it's like looking at a work of art or a picture. I see it, I admire it, then move on with my life.

But guys can tell which guys look baddass and which don't. Meanwhile women suck at judging baddass-ness.
