Default When your parents get too old to take care of themselves would you take them in?

I like to think I would, but in reality I'd probably try to pawn them off to someone else, like my brothers or sister or maybe even one of those homes they stick old people to wait for death.

How about you?

Nursing homes are expensive, and I'd feel like shit sending my mum to one of those places, having worked in them myself and seen just how horrible they can be.

In an ideal world she'll stay active and happy and healthy up to a ripe old age and then deteriorate swiftly with no pain or discomfort.

If I've the money, and if she needs it, I'll have to take her in. You dont just discard the person who's loved you and protected you and bought you things all your life.

It allways made me sick and sad when I worked in nursing homes, some of the old ladies were so lonely and sad. Their kids put them in a home on the other side of the country, the world even sometimes, so they'd have the excuse of it being a long journey to only visit once a month or so. Sick evil people.

Caring for her would be hard, especially if she got dimentia, confused, and so on. It would be hellish. And I know if she became incontinent also pads and such can be horribly expensive.

I know my brother would ditch all responsibility, as is typical of shit like him. So it would be me on my own caring for her.

This thread makes me sad. :(
I dont wanna think about it.

My father isn't planning to live into deep old age and my mother would probably be taken in to live with one of my siblings if she cannot care for herself, but knowing my grandmother, my mother will be able to take care of herself quite easily im sure.

Really wishful thinking.

My father....hmmm. I imagine my half brother would take care of him (my dad lives in Ireland and has an Irish son), dad wouldn't want to leave Ireland.

My mother...if she could follow my one rule (no alcohol...she has/had a serious alcoholism problem that very much affected the way I grew up).

I don't think she could stop drinking though...and she knows I wouldn't have her otherwise...my sister is too useless to take her in, so it's probably the nursing home for her (I imagine alcohol related problems will take her in the end).

In a similar vain of thought, one day when I have money I'd like to pay for her to go to some kind of alcoholics clinic thing. Dunno if she'd do it though.

Unless they need special care that I can't provide, then yes. I'm the compassionate one in my family, and we've all talked about how it'll end up being me who takes care of the 'rents when they get old. I don't know, I just don't see how you could deny your parents that. Well, if they loved and took care of you well, which my parent's have. Getting old makes me sad. :(

My grandpa has dementia and it's so depressing, because he was such a smart man. He's still smart, but he can't remember anything and my grandma has gotten severely depressed because she has to take care of him. I basically try to ignore this situation because thinking about it makes me cry.

damn, you know either way if you send them to a home or take care of them yourselves it would bring alot of heartache to you and them, it may be kinda horrible to say but i hope they reinstate euthanasia and my parents do that before they become so impotent and mentally feeble

This freaks me out to think about but I think (know) that if they lived with me, it would be a really big burden on me. Being the type of person I am with my parents. I think my brother would take them in first. I feel so disgusting for thinking that way.

Tradition and culture would have me care for my mother. She would probably stay with my sister though. But grandparents in our family are convenient. They take care of the toddlers while parents are at work, cook, and clean. They take care of themselves like someone said earlier.

This has kinda been a joke in my family because my parents are divorced and they each despise each other, that between both of my families, I'll probably end up with both of them.

As much as I love them dearly and know I'd take them in, I HATE the thought of it. Really, I do.

My Mum's worked with dying elderly people for years and seeing them behave the way they do [though they're completely out of it and it's not usually their normal state that makes them act that way] I don't think I'd have the patience to handle it. Some of them are just horrid and knowing my Mum the way she is now, I have no doubt she'll be the same.

Actually I'm not really looking forward to it.

If any of you had seen what a nursing home is really like, you'd severely re-consider foisting off your parents to one.

That overpowering smell of air freshner? It generally hides the smell of feces, death and sick. If you walk past a closed door, generally it means that behind it is a dead person, being bathed quickly to keep the body flexible enough to get into a clean nightie and look nice for the mortuary people.

Once you've heard old ladies crying at night and roaming the corridors, looking for their husbands, or getting upset because they dont know where they are and want to go home..

If an old person get's shunted into a home it's usuallly because the bastard kids wanted the house. That means the old person gets shoehorned into one crappy little room after a house and lifetime of memories and possesions.

I've seen kids calmly flinging out their parents possesions saying "look mum, you dont need this anymore, dont be silly" while the crying old lady looks on.

I've even seen carers get abusive. Not even with the aggressive old people that try to hit the staff. With gentle, fragile old people who are usually quite sweet but dared to ask if a chance ofa cup of tea was possible at 3am.

I've attempted to report such Carers to the correct authorities, authorities who just dont care because there arent enough people to do the job so they need every body they can get. Sometimes you have to deal with such people yourself..

I just think about how my mum love her freedom, the way she can do what she wants whenever she wants.

All that would be smashed if she went into a care home. In a care home you get up at X time precisely, you eat at a precise time, you have your afternoon nap at a precise time, tea at a very deffinate time and you get put to bed at a deffinate time, and god help you if you dont want to fit in with that strict timetable by staying up a little later to watch TV or if you want to go for a walk.

In a dream world, 2 old people grow old together and look after each other.
In real life, one of them tends to get sick and die, leaving the otherone helpless to struggle along for a while before being shunted into a poxy little room in a nursing home, whilst their kids sell all their parents possesions to buy a holiday to majorca.

I'm disgusted by how kids can act towards their parents at times.

I'd look after my mother, but not my dad. If she's retired my only request is that some of her pension cash goes towards helping pay bills and shopping.

They didnt buy you that pony, did they?
:(

Sure, if you've been horribly abused or beaten by a parent for a long, long time, and even now you're still dealing with the trauma, then yeah, they dont deserve your care when they get old.
Notice I dont talk about caring for my dad. For all I care he can go to the worst care home this side of the city and get smacked around by tired nurses. It would be karma, in a way.

First you think I still live with my parents, now you seem to think they were fantastic and I am just being a spoiled brat.

Like I said before, I would take my mother in despite everything if she stopped drinking.

It's still a sad state of affairs the way some parents can treat their children.

Fuck. I'm the youngest. My two elder brothers are about 15 years older than me, my sister who is near my age is a bitch who will marry out of the family. I'm the only one that's young that is on good terms with my father (even though I dislike him), I love my mum and I really don't like my step dad. (I didn't have any biases towards him, in fact, i welcomed him to the family but he is such a fucking dumb assMadMadMadMad). I plan to live my life in Europe most probably though, so IDK. I would sacrifice a lot for my mum but the other two...
