Internet Dating, oh my.
Hey all. My apologies if this sort of thread has already been done to death, I can't say I've been much of a regular in the last few months. This forum seems to have a pretty high turnover as it is, so here goes.
Dating on the internet.
This is the part where I'm supposed to defend being attractive and more than able to meet people in real life, but this is the internet, right? So I guess nobody really cares. I just moved to a big city about 6 months ago, have met quite a few people, started and ended a few shortlived relationships, and for lack of finding many people that I'm really interested in, I've tried to push through the social barrier of internet dating.
I'm just curious as to how many of you have tried doing the same, or still do? It's been an interesting experience thusfar. There's been a few traps along the way, but otherwise some good has come out of it, in terms of just meeting new people that I wouldn't normally cross paths with as far as my choice of social life goes. Does anyone here have any success stories? Any horrible ones? It's all interesting to know...

Re: Internet Dating, oh my.
Man oh man...
I've tried internet dating, and I/we even had a 2.5 year relationship. I don't know if long-distance relationships count, but we started out online, and then we were "together". Needless to say, after little more than two years, I realized how screwed up things were getting. I ended up finding out a bunch of shocking information about this girl, and we decided to not see one another. Then a few months later, we started talking again. I guess I felt sorry for her, and thought that I should not have been so hard on her. Basically, I ended up flying down to were she was....met here...tried....and seriously tried HARD to make it work....but it didn't. Now it makes sick to my stomach to think about what took place.
But that was just one bad experience.
I think as long as both parties are honest with one another, and I mean seriously fucking honest....then things should work out.
But like I said, I don't know if a long distance relationship, brought about by online dating, counts as what you're talking about.

Well, as long as you plan on meeting the person, I think it's not a bad idea.. if you can handle the distance, that is. Long distance/internet relationships aren't for everyone. You need to have a certain degree of patience and commitment.. along with maturity. I hope you're not internet dating with no intentions to ever meet this person, because that in my oppinion is a waste of time.
I myself have never really been in what you would call an 'internet relationship', more of a long distance relationship which started by an internet relationship. I knew this guy since about '05 through the internet, we talked every now and then, we never really found much interest in eachother as we both had significant others at the time we started talking. After a few years to the begining of this year, we started talking more and realized we had something more for eachother. That was back in February, we started dating at the end if February of this year after I went to visit him in his own state. We have been doing great since then, dating for 5 months about to be six, visiting eachother every month to be able to keep as healthy of a relationship as we can. My motivation is knowing (hoping) that i'll end up with him because I am moving to his area to attend a school at the end of the year.
These kind of relationships don't work for everyone, of course. This distant relationship has definitely tested my abilities, my patience, my trust and commitment, along with others. At times it has been hard, but nothing we both couldn't handle. It definitely is possible, you just have to know what you're getting in to.

Re: Internet Dating, oh my.
I'm in a relationship started online right now. We've been talking for about a year, 'dating' for around 8 months.
We'll be meeting soon, at the end of August, which I can't wait for..
It can work, but it takes a huge amount of commitment and trust, and the right two people. It's hard as hell, but completely worth it if you find the right person. :)

Re: Internet Dating, oh my.
Can someone explain to me the point of using the interent to find a long distance relationship instead of a local one?
Most of the services offered online help you meet people which are in your area.
Doesn't really make sense to have a online relationship with someone for over half a year without meeting them. Whats the point, how can you have a bond with someone you've never really met.

I'd rather find the right person that lives far away, than pick some random person that lives near me. I never used any dating service, or dating websites or whatever. I met him on a game while I was with another guy, one that did live near me.
It's a lot easier to bond with someone when you remove the physical aspect. You aren't as focused on sex and the like, and you can focus on learning about them, and really getting to know them. Obviously it isn't the same as really being with them.
I'm going to be with him in a month, and I think it is completely worth the wait, and the pain of being without him for this long.

That's true. Thanks for the replies... I'd completely forgotten about people using the internet for long distance relationships. Wasn't really what I'm doing personally, but whatever works out I guess. I'm using it at the moment to find people that live here in the same city. If anything, it's kind of a way to meet different people that I probably wouldn't ever come across. Not really into the whole trashy clubbing scene around here, the bars I normally go to seem to attract the pretentious kind, and the places I enjoy are either completely abandoned or full of old people.
Maybe I'm just boring as fuck, but either way, there's been a few strange situations so far. Two of the better girls I've met turned out to be best friends, both secretly using the same site, and the others... I probably won't even go into. They're on the internet for a reason...

Re: Internet Dating, oh my.
I'm in one.
I'm seeing her in a month.
It's Khepri! :p
Basically as she said, if the two people really see a future in one another and can handle the wait..which is hard, it'll work. Glad that we're seeing each other sooner than the original date, it's basically a test. A lot better waiting the rest of the time and then finding out you dislike the person. Dun think that'll happen.

Re: Internet Dating, oh my.
Craigslist yourself. Its free, and a couple flattering pictures can take you a long way with people who are local. Get fatty insurance pics from her before you meet. Yeah its blind dating basically, but you might strike gold in the process or at least score a couple one-nighters.

Re: Internet Dating, oh my.
I too use the net to find/meet new people. It's especially because I'm in a new city. I can't work or do school here and I'm not a bar person, so that leaves online socializing as the best option.
What is the best way to go from online to personal? I mean after you've met someone on the net, you like eachother and such...is there any way to turn it into phone conversations or dates without seeming kind of weird? I lack experience in this area, but I'm sure some of you on here have been through it quite a few times.

Re: Internet Dating, oh my.
I think it's a great way to meet people. I think long distance things over the internet are stupid though. Yeah, it might be easier to get to know someone if you remove the physical element, but it's also alot easier to lie on the internet. Also, """"""""""""""""""""""""
^^That was from my puppy.
Anyway, what I was trying to say was that a physical attraction is very important. And there's no way to tell if you have that chemistry over the internet, even if you f""""""""""""" find their picture attra]=c-tive.
Ahaha it's so hard to type when there's a puppy teething on your fingers,.
So yeah, I think it's a good way to meet people in your area. But make sure you meet in a public place the first few times, just to be safe.

^^^In all cases?
I think going for a coffee with someone you found on a dating site trumps trolling bars for numbers...

Re: Internet Dating, oh my.
i met someone cool through totse maybe a year ago? i dont know how long ago it was really. but we didnt really talk much at all until recently. in fact there were months we never talked at all. i dont really know when or how it happened but at some point we started talking again and for no real reason seemed to hit it off. its pretty cool. and weird because nothing like this has happened to.. either of us before. i dont like the fact that its happening like this because long distance relationships really suck..
the good news is though, end of next month theyre coming up for a visit :D

Re: Internet Dating, oh my.
i have only had one experience with internet dating. It ended with mixed results.
I signed up for a free membership on one of hte dating sites....premium members could contact me, but i couldnt contact them. So one day this chick sends me an instant message and we start chatting and talking and things are going good...she's pretty much interested in hooking up. We traded pics. She was SMOKING hot gorgeous; big tits, great ass, beautiful face. I thought, no fucking way. she lived over an hour away from me and wanted to come meet me some night. So we met up.....and it turned out that the girl who showed WAS the same girl that was in the pictures.....40 pounds later. She was pretty fat, had a wierd personality....we got some dinner and drinks, then went back to my place.....said she didnt want to do too much, or something...i dont really remember, kinda hazy....we both end up half naked in my bed.....fooling around a little....well i dont need to go into details....i didnt get laid, she was a bitch, and she mislead me with her pics.
but one of my friends has had great results in random hookups from the net.

Re: Internet Dating, oh my.
Meeting people on the net is grand. There's no possible way you can be exposed to such diversity in just meeting people through people. This way you're exposed to all types and you don't have to concentrate on one, and I find that it's generally more interesting this way because the other person is likly to be more honest with you. I've met several great people through totse, I have a really close friend and we're supposed to be meeting soon. Like others have said, you don't focus so much on the sexual element, and I bet when you get together the sex is great. ;) hehe.
Good luck meeting people, etc.
Also, be safe. Despite the pros, there's cons of dating on the web. Of course, you know this. It would just be unpleasent hearing about you being ass raped by some big burly nigger in a dark ally somewhere and becoming the laughing stalk of your town instead of social stud like you're aiming for.

Re: Internet Dating, oh my.
I met a girl off myspace, she was really attractive. We dated for 3 months, and I can honestly say myspace got me laid. She turned out to be a crazy bitch though... funny how that works.
