Default What's your opinion of polygamy?

Polygamy= multiple wives.

I can't see a real reason why it shouldn't be allowed. I don't think men should have 20 wives but having 2-4 wouldn't be that bad. I think it would take a very open dynamic from all parties, but it would eliminate adultery and limit many STI's.
What do you think?
I'm a guy, and you might want to mention your gender since it plays a role in how you view this subject.

Polygamy means many spouses, not specific to wives.

I don't see a problem with it. If you want to share your wife with someone else, or they want to share you, what's the big deal?

I'm also not a Christian, so I don't believe we all have one soul mate. If you can provide for them, financially and emotionally, and they're happy like that, WHO'S TO SAY YOU SHOULDN'T???

I don't think most people would be able to handle it on a long-term basis without something going awry.

Things like emotions and jealousy and all that will eventually rise to the surface.

i would never be able to handle anything that wasn't monogamy in the strictest sense. i'm too jealous, insecure, whatever, polygamy just isn't for me at all. that being said, i kind of adore hugh hefner and his 3 girlfriends. no matter how completely wrong it might be for me i still think they're completely precious for some reason.
oh and i'm female.

Hugh Hefner and his 3 hos are precious? He gets blowjobs from them, and anal sex with the head playmate, and they get to live in the house, all expenses paid.

Sounds like prostitution more than "preciousness".

But that's just me.

I think that in rare instances it might be able to work out if all parties involved were adult, consenting and able to handle the jealousy, etc.

But that being said, polygamy mostly just seems to be an instrument used to keep the men in power over the women. You know, all these cults and shit that marry the girls off in 8th grade to a dirty old man. It seems as though the women in these cultures are simply baby machines/servants to the men.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyandry <<< Female-centered Polygamy.

Bitch please, take your feminazi propaganda elsewhere. There are many societies where the females rule. Look up Matriarchal societies.

Also, Akon has 4 wives, or so he claims. You're telling me that if a woman is being taken care of financially, and is getting a good throwdown every now and again, she's going to protest? He isn't holding these women hostage, they're married to him by choice.

Why? Because all women are shallow materialistic whores, and they're with him because he's rich as fuck. Everybody wins.

If you will look at the original post, the OP was specifically asking about having multiple wives. I am fully aware what a matriarchal society is, and I don't think it's relevant to the topic at hand. I was obviously only talking about male centred polygamy, which to the best of my knowledge is by far more prevelant than female based.

I'm sure Akon's wives are happy, that's why I said that in some instances it could work. But do you really think that these 12 year old girls who grow up in cults actually want to marry a man who is old enough to be their father? No, they're doing it because their daddies told them that they would go to hell if they didn't serve the husband chosen for them. These are the situations that I disapprove of, and you're a douche if you think that makes me a feminazi.

I realise that not all polygamists are evil male cult members. But religious polygamy seems to be the most common form in North America, and I am highly suspicious of it.

The OP was asking about Polygamy, not Polygyny, which makes talk of both male and female centered relationships fair game. If he wanted to ask about multiple wives, he should have consulted a dictionary beforehand.

Most of the places where 12 year old girls are sent away to be with some 50 year old don't practice polygamy, they're merely monogamous relationships in which the female isn't given any choice, and on top of which, her family must pay a certain amount of goats for the man to take her. (Watch the movie Water if you actually want to know what's going on there). But don't worry, at the rate female infanticide is increasing, soon there won't be any girls left to marry off.

I don't see what you're arguing for. Any cult that forces a woman to marry a man, or vice versa, is going to result in unhappy spouses, regardless of if it's polygamous or monogamous.

Polygamy when everyone choses their partners is great. They know what they're getting into, and they can chose to back out. It's like a normal relationship, and then some.

You're mixing up Polygamy with crazy Indian people who send off their 12 year olds to marry 50 year olds. That has nothing to do with polygamy, it's just religion, culture, and a retarded way of life.

Think of the Emperors of old. They must have had 100s if not 1000s of wives, and they all seemed happy. If something that fucked up can work, I'm sure a guy with 2 wives can manage to satisfy them both.

I think she was referring more to the Bountiful type cults, strings of mormonism in certain parts of Utah and British Colombia as far as I know. You may want to look it up.

For me, relationships are all about sharing experiences and learning together, jealosy finds no place or purpose in that kind of freindship. Once you accept that jealousy is just an adaption to help with reproduction, its pretty easy to ignore it. So yeah, I love polyamory.

Those people have nothing to bitch about. If in those cults you're being sold to another man, simple walk into a police station, explain yourself, and watch as everyone gets arrested and you get off free to live your life.

Don't give me bullshit about "they're forced into that way of life, they'll lose everything, blah blah blah". If you can't walk away (which you can in the USA, nobody can stop you the way they can in India), and start a new life because you're too much of a pussy, then you deserve to be sold off and have your life dictated for you.

Polygamy is not based around a relationship between equals.

I would not want to be in a committed relationship if I couldn't look at that person as an equal. Polygamy, in general, is based on lifetime commitment.

So, I don't have a high opinion of it.

Yeah, I'm not really talking about those weirdos in Bountiful and in Utah, as they brainwash those girls that they'll go to hell if they don't comply. They are so scared to betray God, they will never leave. Lots of Christians do the same thing to their own children to make them keep quiet about sexual abuse.

That aside, I've had women who are friends of my fiance that have wanted to also get married to me. My fiance could never handle this, however she feels I should donate sperm. It's apparently so hard to find a good man nowadays women are becoming willing to share one.

Of course, polygamy is talking about marriage. I think marriage is stupid. Polyamory is the correct term really for having multiple partners or multiple person relationships.
