Does anyone here realize there's a difference between God and Religion?
Seriously...It seems like everyone on Totse can't discern the two...
Can't you believe in God, without all of the rules and such? I know that's vague, but I hope some people can go out on a limb and identify with that statement...

Re: Does anyone here realize there's a difference between God and Religion?
Yeah, you believe in some all-powerful hidden spirit in the universe without all the stories and organized history to back it up.
It's like believing in unicorns to just believe in something you call "God" without reason. Why even call it "God" if its not linked to any known religion? What are the properties of your unreligious "God"?

Every religion is just another method of reaching god. Some are more effective than others but none are essential. Reaching God is inevitable for us all and you don't have to do anything apart from live and learn.

Re: Does anyone here realize there's a difference between God and Religion?
OP, I have been saying that for years.
God is not some sort of super-sized Santa Claus, or a gaseous invertebrate, but rather the combination of energy and intelligence that created, sustains, and permeates the universe.
There are no "rules" save those you choose to impose upon yourself. Free will is absolute.

Just because it is written, it is not necessarily true.

"God" can part of any theistic philosophy.

Oh for fuck's sakes, you stupid bitches will just redefine "God" into whatever lame ass, new-age bullshit you come up with. Next you idiots will be telling me that God is just another word for Dark Matter or something.

Hostility, ignorance, and vulgarity certainly makes an unattractive combination. You seem to be trying to give trekkies a bad name.
In point of fact, there is nothing "new-age" about the gospels of Thomas and Judas, the writings of St Teresa, the Vedanta, A Course in Miracles, and so forth--all of which more or less share "my" conception of God.
Take Bob Dylan's advice and don't criticize what you can't understand.

I couldnt say it better myself. People automatically think religious ties when you mention god. If anything we can explain in physical terms, god is spiritual rather than religious. God is everything and everywhere. It is within us and its energy flows throughout space and time. I also agree there are no rules except those that you put on yourself. I remember a famous saying "No one can make you feel bad about yourself, unless you let them" well that idea can deff apply in this situation.

Re: Does anyone here realize there's a difference between God and Religion?
Surak is obviously going after you because of your use the term God which is so frequently redefined freely, which you happened to do. Your idea of god as "the combination of energy and intelligence that created, sustains, and permeates the universe" is based entirely on conjecture and has absolutely nothing to back it up. Of course there is no belief in god that can be backed up by evidence. I particularly dislike your comment on not criticizing what you don't understand. There is nothing to understand about god. It doesn't matter what you call your god or what you think your god is. There is no evidence and nothing to understand.

Re: Does anyone here realize there's a difference between God and Religion?
Thats the key really, when it comes to atheists, religion is really irrelevant, its the idea of a god/deity/spirit/figure whatever you wanna call it. The thing is you can't rule out the possability that there isn't a god. The most you can say is "there is no evidence that proves there is a god, so therefore i believe there isn't one." Back when people "knew" the earth was flat, the idea that it was any other shape would be entirely on conjecture and would have absolutely nothing to back it up. How would we ever advance if we only focused on what had "facts" to back it up?

a flat earth hypothesis can be determined true or false based on overwhelming evidence.
god isn't even a hypothesis.
god isn't even good enough to be false.

If you look carefully out the ocean, or from a high spot you can actually see that the earth is round.

Yes i know that, iv always heard that explained by when you see a boat comming toward you, it doesnt just get bigger and bigger as it comes toward you, but rather you see the mast first, and than slowly you see more and more of the boat.

It is based on, and backed up by, personal observation./

There is a great deal to understand, and to misunderstand--as you demonstrate. It has been truely written that unless you realize that Hitler is in Heaven, you know nothing about God.

Does that mean there's no after life?
The properties of the one above are being questioned, not the properties of his kingdom.
I'm inclined to say yes, regardless - if one were to travel after death then could you say that one had truly died?

Re: Does anyone here realize there's a difference between God and Religion?
I'm not even sure how people can seriously talk about anything spiritual, as if they have empirical evidence or something. Rather, it is just an old, recycled idea used by the ancients because they didn't understand that our brain has chemicals that produce emotions, thought, sensations, etc. So, it was a theory for filling their ignorance, but now we know better.
But to the OP, you have got to be kidding. There are more people that accept a sort of new-agey, Hindu-type conception of God here than people that accept the Judeo-Christian conception.

Well, how did your experiments go? Did you ever attempt my idea?

You sure about that? Double check the poll.
Christianity - 12
Hinduism - 0
Other - 9

Well, just the feeling that I get. I mean, the regulars tend to be more 'other' than 'Christian'.
No, I haven't done 'the experiments', maybe I will in September. My ex and I actually split on the first of this month and so my days have mostly been full of depression and wondering. I couldn't possibly have meditated with so much on my mind, but I still intend on giving it a go...in due time.
