the way scientology works is like any other religion. They look for people with low-self esteem and depressed people and generally people at their lows, and then give hope of happiness via their cult.
When someone is ripped offa a drug, they feel pretty bad. Then instead of reason and rationality, scientology steps in instead. At this point, the person would sign up for any bullshit scheme.
This is how most businesses and organisations work too.
