Default Divorce

So my friend here on the base is getting divorced and it's really sad. She and her husband have been married for 13 years and they have 5 children and he's leaving her for another woman. She's been crying every day for the past week and I just don't know what to say to her. I've been bringing her cookies and stuff and inviting her over to my house, but nothing seems to lessen her pain. What's really strange is they seemed so happy together, but now she's been telling me all of this bad stuff that was happening in their marraige that I never would've guessed. Worse yet all of her other "friends" are shunning her as if her divorce is contagious or something.

So does anyone here have experience with this sort of thing? Is there anything I should do/shouldn't do for her?

Personally i would just leave her alone for a while to get herself together but make sure she knows that you will be there for her if she needs.

I can only imagine how much it might hurt to lose someone you've been with for so long.
I know in the grande scheme of things 13 years isnt that much, but it's one fuck of a long time to live with someone, so once they're gone, it's going to slam you like a bitch.

Ask her if she wants to crash on your couch sometimes. The daytime can be okay, but sleeping alone in the empty bed at night that you've previously shared with a person for 13 years is really painfull.

You could help her move on. Ie, get rid of all his stuff, help her chose her own things, keep her mind occupied.

When my ex left, the appartment felt so big and lonely, I found filling it with shiny junk and stuff I'd allways wanted to helped.

Oh I'm encouraging "the bitch" to take everything and I mean EVERYTHING except maybe his corneas. We figured out that the minimum child support he'll have to pay is $3200 per month and that's just the beginning. She hasn't worked in over a decade, so he'll have to pay her alimony for at least 6 1/2 years. They own a house together which I predict she'll be getting, because she and her 5 kids will need somewhere to live. Also, according to Georgia divorce law, he'll have to give her a lot more because he's committed audultery and he's leaving her.

I read the title and immediately assumed your marriage fell through. I was disappointed. Mad

However, this is why I shall never make the mistake of getting married. I'll go steady with a chick, have kids, etc, but I will NEVER allow a woman the ability to run off and rob me blind on a whim.

$600 a month per child is about right. Of course, this depends on what sort of money he makes. Along with the house, this is more than enough money.

Taking him for everything will not make her feel any better. It may, in fact, make her feel worse. This is an action that she has to live with and these events will be remembered for the rest of her life, and the lives of her children.

All presenting a Perfect Public Face. People are a little afraid that problems are contaigeous. EEK!

How was she with her five kids? Much like a mother cat who's kittens are getting big & toothy? In other words was she much distracted & with the 5 little kids & the 6th big kid? He might be an officer in public...but to her maybe he was just another whiny brat at home.

Why should she need to take anything? Surely he'll more than generously provide for his kids (sign over the house kinda thing)? Especially as he's the one commiting adultery.

Or is there something you're not telling us ..like the kids aren't all his?...?

Jesus fucking christ, what the hell is the matter with you? She hasn't bothered to work in over a decade, and therefore she deserves to be set for life while he files bankruptcy WHY?

Perhaps the woman is like Xiao Mei and her husband simply hasnt wanted her to work?

Anyway. If it was the woman leaving the man with all those kids, I'd expect the woman to pay that much child support, and hand over the house.

In this situation though, it's the man dumping the kids on the woman.

It may not seem fair to some, but if the guy didnt want to end up paying child support in the future, he should have slapped on a condom before bringing more kids into the world.

I'm pretty dissapointed with the both of them, having that many kids in an unstable relationship. But.. maybe they were happy together up untill recently, but I doubt it.

You're old enough to know that A LOT of guys try to screw ex wives and children out of money once they've moved on to family #2. I don't know if this guy is one of them, but his wife needs to be prepared and to protect herself and her kids. I've known at least 2 couples where the husband fought tooth and nail to keep the wife from getting her due. Luckily, the courts almost always side with the woman in these instances.

A lot of husbands (mine included) make enough money so that their wives are stay ay home moms. And with 5 kids...How in the hell is she going to work outside the home anyway?? He SHOULD take care of her...She's taken care of him for 13 years! And as I've said on here before...Just because a woman doesn't get PAID to be a stay at home mom, it doesn't mean it's not "work" that she's doing. Especially with FIVE kids. And 6 1/2 years alimony is hardly being "set for life."

Yes the men do, no question and its wrong.

BUT

A lot of the time there are reasons why the men feel justified in their refusal to pay. Still don't make it right of course.

I mean, you really sure she hasn't also been cheating him?

Of course the courts will decide for her in this case, 5 kids...no question.

Except if he's going to go for sole custody?

When would she have the time? Seriously, I have ONE 6 year old child and I sure as hell don't have time for more than one man. Unfortunately i tend to judge all americans (or rather all american women) by the 'outcast standard' , ie I expect them to be beautiful, intelligent, sexy and profound of thought.

Which means I live in constant disappointment.

Her 11 year old is a big help to her, so that's good. The kids are taking their dad leaving pretty hard...Especially the 6 and 9 year olds. I guess they were the closest to him or something.

You could suggest not badmouthing him infront of the children.

Let them have their own relationship with their father. It doesn't have to be influenced by an unpleasent divorce. Even if he's a scumbag of an ex-husband, it doesn't mean that he'll be a bad father.

Dont worry, they feel the same about you.

And it's a tad judgemental to assume that all women are like that.

But yes, if I was in a fucked up situation where I'd had kids with someone who'd promised to rear them with me, and then that person decided to screw someone else and foist the kids off on me, I'd damn well take his balls as well as his house and car.

It's true though, it should work that way for men as well. It's unjust that it doesent.

When my parents broke up, my mum and I got nothing.
She was the one who had to feed me, buy my clothes, pay for my books and such, she was the one who did all the work, but my 'dad' gave us nothing.

Some might say that's damn right, why should he?

Why should he?

Because when two people decide to have a kid, the responsibility doesent just disapear when you want it to.

If you still see the kid, and still act like a parent, then you should fucking care about their wellbeing.

Childwellfare is meant to be for the children and their benefit, not for the parent to go shoe shopping with.
I know that's abused horribly at times, and that's what needs to change.

The parent who takes responsibility of the children should be the parent to get assistance, be it the mother or the father.

If the father takes the children then the mother should still pay maintenance. And vice versa. This isnt money grabbing, this is continuing to look after the fucking resonsibility you chose to take on when you decided to take that condom off.

Most men who get "screwed" in divorce are actually just being forced to pay what they should've paid WILLINGLY in the first place. This has been my experience, anyway.

Actually in todays society that does not matter. If you are named the father, you are pretty much screwed from there on out. Not that such situations are relevent here, but while wearing a condom may prevent parenthood, it cannot prevent child support.

...needs to be prepared and to protect herself and her kids...

The best way to have done that would have been to work her way up in the workforce for the last decade, so as not to rely entirly on someone who could leave at any moment.

Ya, sure here husband will be stuck with her bill for the next 6 years as you said, but what the hell sort of job is she suitable for? Do any of them pay enough to support 5 children? No!

You don't start protecting yourself and your children after you are divorced, you need to be self reliant, and not earn your living sucking giant dicks and avoiding anal. I guess she didn't even do that to well, so prostitute is out of the question.

Yeah, he should have WILLINGLY handed over the house, car, and all the money he spent the last god knows how many years obtaining while the wife drove the kids to and from school, cleaned the house, and watched soap operas. Really fair.

Actually in todays society that does not matter. If you are named the father, you are pretty much screwed from there on out. Not that such situations are relevent here, but while wearing a condom may prevent parenthood, it cannot prevent child support.

Actually, the lady I made the thread about has a degree in elementary education, so she can be a teacher if she wants. And her husband will be paying child support for a lot longer than 6 years. 6 1/2 years is how long she'll get alimony.

I mean most homemakers don't have to worry about getting dumped like she is. She just happened to marry an exceptionally big asshole. In my experience, most married couples will make an effort to work things out...Especially when there are kids involved.

Ok, so she does have a fall back. Sure she'll get child support until the kids are 18, but i can guarentee she'll still need to get a decent job.

And actually all homemakers should be prepared to wake up alone one morning. Maybe you don't think your husband will leave, but he could. What would happen if he was hit by a bus, or slipped on the stairs? Shit he could even be fired and you'd be screwed until atleast one of you got a job.

I really have no say in any other situation, but i really see no reason for a mother to stay home full time after the kids are in school.

I don't know about most women, but if my husband died I would get $400,000 in life insurance and then $4,500 per month with regular increases (for inflation) and I would continue to get medical coverage for the rest of my life. My daughter would also get medical coverage until she was 23 and SS payments until she was 18.

And he's in the military, so he won't be fired.:P

And you don't go into a marraige assuming you'll get divorced,

Simply, be a friend.

try and help her focus on moving on, and being able to get over it, and that life will continue, and everything will be ok.

Which was about the same time as Jesus' body hit room temperature.

My advice would be:

Find a good attorney, but not the "go for blood" type. One that is fair and reasonable.

Always keep the children in mind. If he is a good daddy then never behave as if he's a piece of shit regardless of how she might have been hurt.

Keep the lines of communication with him open. She's going to be living with this situation for a lot of years and if she can avoid creating an enemy out of him then it will go a lot smoother in the future when it comes to the needs for their children. (Also, look into shared parenting if he's a good daddy.)

The alimony needs to be used to get an education so she can learn to support herself without it. Nothing more, I'm pretty certain that is what it is for.

And Xiao, you don't know all the details. Stay as neutral and supportive as possible.

If I can think of anything else, I'll update here.

Ah...that's what we all say. :P

Given the right attitude that can change.

Also, I've known a few women who battled to get the house who ended up in bankruptcy court years later because they couldn't afford the payments. I'd be careful about that.
