I notice that the forum description to Eat Your Words says to post 'only your own' poetry. Now I'm well aware of the long history of Vogon poetry the forum.

I could have posted this in either Vogon Poetry or Printed Matter, but as it also technically raises the question of threads that could belong in either forum, I felt it more appropriate just to leave it here.

So my question is, if I wanted to post someone ELSES poetry and discuss it (or lyrics, or anything of that nature), where would I do it? My instinct tells me Printed Matter because Vogon Poetry has traditionally always just been a place where people post their OWN poetry and talk about it - or at least thats what I've always thought the place was about.

But then I think to myself what if I wanted to discuss say .. Steely Dan lyrics (okay you caught me, I want to start a thread about FAgen and Becker lyrics - sue me!). Well they're not really the kind of thing you sit around and read like you might Wordsworth or Coleridge, its really something you strictly listen to (like a lot of poetry).

So what I'm getting at is, could I get a clarification on what Vogon Poetry (the forum) is for exactly? If its JUST about discussing things people on totse have written, why is it separate from Printed Matter?

I realize that Vogon Poetry has a LONG history on totse and I sure like it the way it is myself, and obviously because I dont know the answer to my own question, means it probably hasnt been asked often, so it doesnt really matter that much. But I'm curious.

I see Euda post here all the time, but I dont think I've ever seen either of the three mods from Eat Your Words post here, so maybe this isnt much of a thread, but I'm still hoping to get a response.

Just thought I would post my question here so that if there were differing opinions by the moderators of the two forums, they could just be worked out BEFORE I post anything..

If it's an original writing, it goes in Eat Your Words.

If it's about someone elses writing, it goes in Printed Matter.

They are seperate because people post whatever vogon-esque poetry or writings that tickle their fancy in Eat Your Words. These things would rather clutter Printed Matter.

One's for writing, one's for reading.

Too bad Vogon is really a terrible forum. Most threads are, "Let's have a rap-off!"

Now Sambob: First of all, the following is sincere and not meant to be sarcastic in any way. But, if you want to make that thread, why not post it in &R&R? I mean, it is rock related. I know that doesn't do anything about where to post such a thread when it's a poet not a rock lyricist.

Whenever I pop into Eat Your Words it looks like 200 people posting their poetry, only King_Cotton posting something in reply to it and King_Cotton occasionally posting his own poetry in threads that don't get any replies. I admire the guy's dedication.

Well I thought about this good and hard, because we HAVE discussed Steely Dan's lyrics in R&R before, but not in this way. FIRST of all, Fagen and Becker started their careers as... writers! They were English majors for god's sake, but yeah that doesnt matter, however since Dan split up in the 80s, both of them have been doing freelance (though occassional only) writing for magazines and the like. So with this in mind I am happy to treat Dan lyrics as separate entities from their musc, especially since the lyrics are always written completely separately from the music.

I would talk about them in PM instead of R&R because I Want to talk about JUST the lyrics. I hope this all makes sense, if it doesn't maybe I don't have any justification for this thread, or thinking about doing a Fagen and Becker thread. But I had to ask!

I used to frequent it a lot, I haven't in ages I'll have to get onto that. Before every second thread was one of Lost Causes with someone kissing her ass how good it was...well they are good I'm not saying they aren't but that's all I saw :P

I've posted some poetry in there and Hated One helped me out with making one once upon a time.
