Calling God 'Him'
Here is something interesting to ask a Christian, especially a woman.
Why call God 'Him'?
He isn't male, the ruler of the universe does not have a sex.
And if he doesn't have a sex, why call him by a male name? Why not call God "Her"?
Is it because Christianity and a slew of other religions have a history of degrading women, denying them rights, and making them second class?

Re: Calling God 'Him'
lmfao.
and i guess the reason they call ships female names is because pirates and sailors respect women just that much?
many things are assigned sexes, so who cares?

God is a male for the same reason the earth is female; the life that emerges from the earth does so by virtue of being impregnated by rain and sunlight from the sky.
Next question.

Re: Calling God 'Him'
cause God is a boys name, Godess is the girl version duhhhh and combined they are a holy tranny, and ancient bible corporate executives didnt think it was logical to call a tranny "her" since the dick would confuse the shit out of worshippers, therefore they insisted that God was a him and if anyone fukin questioned it he could prove it to everyone in heaven

^^
If you refer to your deity as a "god" than it is a him. It is a masculine name. If you refer to your deity as a "goddess" then it is a her. That is a feminine name.
Not everythings about fucking gender! Sometimes its just how the language works.
Is assuming a latino is a male sexist? No its a masculin suffix.

A woman from, say, Mexico, is properly called a "latina." If she is feisty, tough and so on, she isn't "macho," but "macha."
Back to topic--God is infinite, but the Abrahamic religions are patriarchial, hence oppressive to women.
Some Native American religions speak of Father Sky and Mother Earth. My tribe (The Muskogee Nation, fomerly known as Eastern Creeks) refers to "the Master of Breath."

If god exists, it's a giant phallus.
No head, no body, no limbs, all phallus.

Perhaps she just prefers that you think of her as a male!
Why add to the confusion of the male ego? :)

Because "it" is viewed as degrading
Now the real question, why did you decide to use "you" for plural too? Did you want it to confuse the shit out of people?

Re: Calling God 'Him'
the way i see it is because the idea of god is often derived from religion, and most religions (excluding cluts and sects, and NRM's) started a long time ago, in chuavanast patriarcal societies, hence things related to teh religion/god i.e. sacred texts were written by males not females ("guided under the influence of god" in many cases), hence written froma mans point of view.
if men respect other men more than woman and they respect their god it makes sense that they choose to make their god a male.

Re: Calling God 'Him'
Because society, up until recently, has always been patriarchal. 'He' is the default. "God made man in his image."
You answered your question the way I would have, really.

Re: Calling God 'Him'
I'm too lazy to check it out, but what about genders in older languages, in which the concept of god was first used in. Languages from mesopotamia and india? Since some languages distinguish only between living/inanimate and don't contain any information about the sex of the subject.
AND women were considered baby-factories back then, men literally didn't give a fuck.
(The concept of god is the most important one in human history. Also the deadliest and thus one of the stupidest ideas ever)

Re: Calling God 'Him'
Viking cultures treated women in their society with very high regard and sentiment, and recognized their status among their ranks as peers, the same way their mythology reflects it within the pantheons.
Their chief deities were males. So, fie on the "men never gave a fuck" hypothesis.

finally. yea god made Man in his image (adam) then made a woman from his rib(eve) or somthing like that, i left catholic school a while ago and havent be devout since. god made the man first so it stands to reason that god is a man or looks like one. assuming he exists.

YES
I mean really, what are you smoking/shooting up to believe otherwise?
And people refer to ships, cars, and etc because men wish they could make love to their various toys.

Re: Calling God 'Him'
In spanish, every single noun is assigned a gender. There's no particular reason "door" (la puerta) is female and "book" (el libro) is male.

there is no sexually ambiguous 3rd person pronoun in english.
"it" doesn't count because it implies an object, not a person.

Re: Calling God 'Him'
Is God refered by a masculine term in every language, or just English?
It could just be the fact that Western society, as well as middle Eastern society from which our beliefs stem, were very pro-male to all good things, and viewed women as evil. I mean, Eve bit the apple and tricked Adam into doign it as well, right?
In a society that prized men over women, why the hell would the language evolve to call God by a woman? No, the language will evolve to call God by a masculine term.
Its not a matter of ideas or interpretations of God, but only a matter of linguistics applied to early faiths which did not view women as equals.
Plus as stated earlier, there is no 3rd person genderless word besides "it." "It" is not applicable because that would infer that God is a object.

Re: Calling God 'Him'
My guess is that religion, generally being for the simple-minded, must embrace simple-minded concepts, while still investing your faith in a complex force that you care to have no comprehension of, as long as it makes your life better. So giving god a gender humanizes it in a way that it can emphasize with you and your silly little problems.

Re: Calling God 'Him'
I don't think the harmony of the macrocosm being the direct response of a prime mover acting on inert matter is an easier idea to accept so long as the aforementioned mover shares my ability to have a boner.
Like I said before, it's a matter of allegory: the masculine elements of sun and sky impregnate the feminine, telluric womb and so yields life. This relationship is true of sex as well as worship.
The end.
