Default Printed Matter and Harry Potter 7 spoilers

Printed Matter will get hit hard when Harry Potter comes out. Some of the threads will be harmless, but others will attempt to ruin the book for others.

Furthermore, almost all of the pages of the book have leaked, and the ending has been shown.

Can we treat spoilers as spam? Can we infract them as such? I don't think it's fair for those who have been waiting for the book to have it ruined by n00bs. This is especially true for the younger crowd.

...Well, and those of us that have been reading since seventh grade :p.

Hmm that's something I've never sort of considered.

I'd...make a warning thread stating anyone that does it gets a kick in the pants and to consider it fair warning??

Well, PM doesn't have much room for spam... Unless a Harry Potter or Chuck Palahniuk book comes out. I know I didn't mod with book 5 and book 6 came out, but I remember how nuts it was in there, and would like to avoid it. I've ALREADY had to delete two spoiler threads.

My first line makes zero sense :p I just woke up when I posted it haha

I'd make a "If you post HP7 spoilers without adequate warning, or if there's already a thread and you make a new one expect an infraction" thread :D

You could give the people that already did it neg rep to piss them off too lol

I'm going to butt in here , not because I know the forum but because of my passion for Freedom Of Information.

(Certianly no passion for Harry Potter...how can any adult read such crap?)

Anyway I just wanted to say I think if they don't put a spoiler warning on the thread then you should consider just editing the thread title not deleting it.

Ok thats my £0.02 I'll go and take care of my forums now.

I see nothing wrong as long as a spoiler warning is in the thread title.

I do the same thing with movie in MP. If there are spoilers in the post, I add a warning to the title.

I love how people judge something they've never experienced... So sad.

Anyway, I understand what you're saying... But I think it's easier this way. In the thread I made, I said in a month or so I'd open the forum up to all HP threads, because most 'fanatics' would have read it already. I would do the expect thing for a TV show like the Sopranos if there was a spoiler, or a movie series.

I think the official thread is a good idea and will ensure a good forum isn't turned into a clone thread wasteland.

And as for Harry Potter, well I don't read it either or watch the movies but I'd never call something that is so successful and something that gets children and adults to do something as pure and healthy as reading a book as opposed to other activities 'crap'.

That's not important though. The thread that has been made is good. :)

I understand, but I'm afraid people won't. I've already had to delete one that was unmarked with spoilers. They will only get worse as the book release comes nearer. This way, Euda and I can focus on deleting the spoiler posts in one thread as opposed to sifting through several. If someone posts another HP thread, we can delete it right away.

I replied to NC above this, and I would have said the same thing to this message.

Also, I was planning on making an 'offical' HP thread anyway to avoid lots of clone threads, which is always a problem in PM. We had four or five HP Lovecraft threads, three with just the author's name in the subject, all with the same subject matter.

The infraction warning probably won't stop the spoiler posts, but I'm hoping it will curb them.

Just have two official threads, one for spoilers, and one for speculation.

Are you going to delete any posts by people that have read the book and want to discuss it? I mean, you're going to need a thread for spoilers.

The official thread is a good idea, no question.

What concerns me is this:WARNING

IF YOU POST SPOILERS, TRUE OR NOT, YOU WILL BE INFRACTED! CONSIDER THIS YOUR ONE AND ONLY WARNING

There are to be no links posted in this thread, and they will be deleted whether they contain spoiler information or not.

Even more so as you go on to say that its for petty personal reasons.

Sorry but I feel that goes too far.

But hell if Jeff approves of this kinda 'censorship' now it'd sure make my life easier at times :)

We'll see what he and the super mods say.

Now excuse me please, I need to post a " Any thread with the words 'make out' or using the 'bases' terminology will be deleted cos it pisses me off " thread in S&A.

It's not for personal reasons. However, I do not want to man the thread because people WILL post spoilers that I do not want to be exposed to. I do not think the readers of Printed Matter should have to be exposed to spoilers from people who just want to be malicious.

I will take down the infraction part of the super mods or Jeff says it's against forum regulations.

Well the way you were talking about allowing other Harry Potter threads than the one you started after two months suggested otherwise.

I think that's the way to go though, but it won't stop the spam, just a warning.

You're right: I'm going to change the thing about a month or two. I am at the last hour of my radio show so I've been up for awhile.

I know it won't stop the spam, but I can try. I would feel like an ass if I didn't do anything and let the forum become flooded with spam.

I've been following this series since I was in the seventh grade, and I won't have any n00bs kill the ending for me

Not personal?

Sorry but English isn't my language of choice so maybe I missed some subtle inference there...

Which is why I would not be modding the thread (or even be perusing the intrawebs) until I read the book. This in itself should show that the thread isn't personal. I know that many people who use &totse are going to read Harry Potter, and don't want it ruined for them.

Again, I typed that out of sleepiness and have since changed that sentence to something less asshole-ish with the same message behind it.

Recently on S&A we had people posting images using IMG tags that were obscene, upsetting and probably illegal most places (the dead baby ones)

I didn't feel there was a case for deleting or forbidding the posting of these images because of what totse stands for.

However I did make plain that such images weren't to be IMG tagged but rather linked. The information MUST be available to those who want it (or who are stupid enough to click on a link on totse).

Same applies to the spoilers.

You can insist a warning be posted, you can insist on them being posted in the official thread and to them even only being available as links, inorder to protect those poor souls who think Harry Potter is srs bizness.

But to forbid the posting of them at all is wrong, just wrong.

You have to moderate the forum how you see best, regardless of what anyone here says.

I know spoilers may seem like the end of the world if you're a big fan of the series, but what does this have to do with &TOTSE POLICY??

Infracting people for posting spoilers? I mean come on people. You say that readers of PM are going to be upset by spoilers.. but I bet just as many will be heading to PM over the next few days just because they think thats where they WILL find out what happens.

And as far as it being an issue of whether its legal or not... posting an excerpt from the book before its out may not be legal, but posting a 'spoiler' is PERFECTLY legal as far as I can tell. How are we to know if they're telling the truth anyway?

If you REALLY want to avoid spoilers, then you buy Harry Potter 7 at MIDNIGHT whenever it comes out, read it right then, THEN go back on totse. Don't even turn on your TV, radio, and I advise you to wear earplugs at the book store you buy it at, or better yet take a cab to the store, and pay the driver to buy the book for you.

Shouldnt there definitely be a thread for spoilers NOW if you want people to NOT post them in your 'officiall harry potter 7' thread?

Not really. You moderate the forum like totse dictates. Forums aren't personal playgrounds where mods decide the rules. They're forums on totse and mods just enforce totse's rules.

You can't limit people's ability to discuss something just because you don't want the ending of a book spoiled for you(I'm not saying bangs is doing that, though that's what I gleaned when I first read her post).

This is standard practice. The same thing was done with the previous books.

There are people that appreciate it.

Nothing is being quashed, spoilers will be all over the media soon enough. This is simply regulating things into a single thread.

An official thread that will keep Printed Matter from overflowing with HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER OMG OMG OMG threads.

It's nothing new, it's nothing special.

That wasn't my understanding of what bangbang wrote. What you describe is of course perfectly normal (i seem to recall it being done so the last time the Hogwarts drivel was unleashed on an unsuspecting world).

Did I misunderstand what bangbang was saying?

Understandably, people that have been following the series with curiousity and passion will have a bit more of an interest in this sort of thing. I've read the books, but I haven't followed them from a young age. Personal reasons are in there, but they aren't the reason.

I know that I'd be the same way with a handful of things that I've been following since I was younger. Luckily, they don't have quite the same following as the Harry Potter series.

Past, and current, overwhelming user requests through e-mail, IM, and IRC. It is a policy that has worked well in the past, and should work well enough again.

This is one of the few times that Printed Matter gets flooded by trolls and the moderators work to minimize it.

If you want to see spoilers, there are a variety of places throughout the internet. It's not hard to find such things. Google is a very simple thing to use.

There are many posters on totse with OCD and it has been explained to me on a variety of occasions that quite a few of them cannot help but click on every link and read every thread within certain forums.

Consider it to be as if a master of the cooking craft showed up to feed you a recipe that you were cooking for the first time, when you're three quarters of the way through cooking it. It spoils things.

Having a single thread for these spoilers in a forum where floods and spam is unheard of only serves to encourage others; a troll can easily grab the info from the single spoiler thread and post it everywhere.

It is far easier if the trolls have to go looking for the information, rather than handing it to them on a silver platter.

I have NO interest in HP. People now have somewhere to post their spoilers thats all that matters to me.

I certainly have no interest in expanding the thread especially as I can't do it without directly criticising another mod in public something I always try and avoid.

Kiddie porn threads and "my penis has gone green" threads get closed in S&A.
Torrents and torrent requests get closed in GPP.
"lol will drinking XXXX get me fuked up?" threads get closed in OI.

I dont see how closing "hey I'm going to post the spoiler, which has allready been posted SEVERAL TIMES, and of which there's a thread for anyway" could be any different.

Perhaps an official Harry potter and 'Discuss the spoilers here' type thread would work? Then people would post their stuff in their and it wouldnt be ruined for people who hadnt yet read it as they wouldnt have to post there.

I dont like Harry Potter, I think JK rowling should have her hands cut off, but I can respect people not wanting to get the ending to a good book they're looking forward to being ruined.

Exactly. The last thing we need is the forum being filled with 10,000 Harry Potter threads.

if they aren't the reason (despite her statement that it was-wasn't it lucky i quoted her before she edited it?) what ARE the valid reasons to fobid the posting of or the linking to spoilers in a single approved thread??!

Jack, because people are posting them JUST to be malicious. In my opinion, it is just as malicious as spam, and I will treat it as such.

Throughout this thread you have made comments that show how you feel about the Harry Potter series. I think this negative view on the books is affecting your opinion on the matter.

Well following Bangbang's policy of forbidding things for personal reasons you can be sure there will be less dumb threads in S&A in future.

....I don't think you've even read my posts.

I would have posted the SAME THREAD if I did not read the series. I don't plan on frequenting any forum besides this one until I've read the book. However, some people will not do this and should not be subject to a myriad of unlabeled spoiler threads.

Also, yes I edited two statements from my previous post. That's why I asked fellow moderators for their opinion! I felt that what you and NC had said about my post was correct, so I edited it accordingly. If you look back, you will see that I said "I edited this because you are right." Or something to that effect.

I'm not going to make this an 'argue about the merits of HP' thread, but I am curious to know if you've even read the books. Or have seen how many children and adults have started to read again because of them.

....Anyway. That's just what I was trying to say, yoyo: It is spam for a literature forum. All forums have different types of spam.

As I already said, I will make a thread for plot discussion and spoilers when the book has been released. As Euda so eloquently stated, there is no point in handing trolls (who, btw, would never visit PM unless they wanted to be malicious) spoilers on a silver platter.

Like i said the matter is closed, as far as I'm concerned. As usual Euda managed to pour hand-pressed-by-Sicilian maidens-at full moon-first press-Olive Oil on the Perrier® of my righteous indignation (I'm a food snob I can't help it!)

oh and for the record I have tried reading HP in 3 languages...it was still shite.

That's fine! I'm not going to sit here and bash your opinion on the books, but I'd ask that you'd do the same for me. This thread (er, originally) was about how to deal with spoiler spam, not how mods think about Harry Potter. Unfortunately, I think some of the posts have focused too much on that (yes, my rebuttals included) instead of the matter at hand.

Also, I never read your linked thread that you posted (before it was deleted) because I was asleep at the time. However, from what Jive Talka and Euda said, I'm assuming it involved bashing me in some sort of way. Honestly? I don't give a flying fuck. Although, I do think it's funny that mr. jack, who posts tons of 'OMG BE A BETTER MOD' threads, does something that he has said many times was foreboded. I lol in your general direction.

No the thread in question was not 'bashing' you or Euda directly. Infact I deleted it because it was pointed out to me that while perhaps justified it would still allow an *cough*intelligent *cough* totsean to indentify the mods in question.

Although honestly , this is one of the very few occasions I have felt like criticising a fellow mod openly.

I profess my ignorance to the meaning of the word 'foreboden' , did you mean 'verboten' ??!

There are plenty of intelligent posters on &totse.

Does that make it right? Because you did it a few times?
Excuse me, I typoed. It's forboden.

Although, for someone who mention Chaucer, I would assume they were on the up and up on his vernacular. It's the PP of forbid--Chaucer has been deemed the creator of the word.

So, what you did was make a spoiler thread in s&a just to criticize bangbang? Even after she said that she or Euda would make a spoiler thread in PM after the book was released to the public.

Great job

No.

Printed Matter is where we discuss literature, not spoilers. After the books comes out and people wish to discuss the book, there are bound to be spoilers when talking about the real plot. If I posted a spoiler thread now, I'd be saying "please, post all the shit you found about HP on the net! GOOGLE AWAY!"

No. You got it wrong. A spoiler about a book is not the same as a spoiler about a movie.

People don't always finish the same book at the same time, so the spoiler thread would be for the people that finished the book. They would discuss it and not just post "OMFG RON DIES" if there was a spoiler thread before the book came out.

Come on man get a backbone.

I realize this isn't an issue of rules, as you have broken none.

There is no need for you to continue this condescending (you seem to think its okay to show no respect for the wishes of your fellow mods because they're 'kids' books), and as I already mentioned, DISRESPECTUL behavior.

If this is just your best Trousersnake impersonation or something, okay, very well done, but that doesnt make it any less low.

It's not the action of a child, it's the action of a malicious individual that has thought it out.

Well I guess since jackketch is much older than most other totse members then its not technicaly childish. But I just find it outrageous to say the least, disappointing is perfect I guess.

Since when do moderators have NO ourtesy for each other? Trousersnake acts badly in other moderator's forums, other people inrfract users outside their own orum, and jackketch basically just says to the people who have posted in this thread explaining they dont personally want to see spoilers and saying "I don't care about what you care about!"

I WANTED to see spoilers, but in you signature just isnt the place for it!

I'm not sure why you feel this issue has not been properly resolved. First off this issue (as in this thread) was and is properly resolved. I said several times that Euda had resolved it (and bangbang too by deleting certain things from her original post. It was pure chance I saw you had posted here and decided to see what you had to say.

I thought the thread was dead. But why are you being so DISRESPECTFUL to your fellow moderators by putting spoilers in your signature??

I'm kinda assuming that anyone who, god help them, like bangbang thinks that HP is srs biz has already turned their computer off until the book hits the streets (as bangbang said she was going to do.)

Disrespectful would have been posting in PM, knowing that deleting a fellow mod's post always looks bad to the rest of the board -no matter how justified.

I wish I could indeed say this was lofty protest about Freedom Of information and that I don't force anyone to read my sig but in truth this is me being a right cunt (or as Euda says a 'malicious individual') for reasons I'm not prepared to share with totse in general at the moment although as I trust you you can email me if you want to know what's happening. Nice job man.

I'll try a different approach:

Would you please change your signature so that it does not include spoilers to a popular booked about to be released around the world?

I'm really sorry if you are having a hard time at life, but taking it out on people around you that have done nothing to you can't possibly be the best way to deal with it. And if it is, then why are you a moderator? Moderators are here to help people not make things harder for people.

Are you going to go to the bookstore and molest a few kids too? Maybe you can link child abuse and reading, create a few more illiterate brits.

I'm sure there's an evil letch somewhere in the books that you resemble. It shouldn't take too much effort.

It's a cruel thing that you're doing. Not because you're giving away spoilers, but because you're discouraging young readers.

Feel free to shoot me your justification. If it's something serious, I'm sorry. Yet, I'm not sure how this can help.

I'm really sorry if you are having a hard time at life, but taking it out on people around you that have done nothing to you can't possibly be the best way to deal with it. It works for me. Sorry if I'm not quite as nice or well balanced a person as you(and no that wasn't meant sarcastically)..

And if it is, then why are you a moderator? Moderators are here to help people not make things harder for people. I spend a great deal of my time (and sometimes money) helping the people of this board both on and off it (for some strange reason my opinons seem to carry weight with some people here, especially if its to do with sex/kids/unwanted pregnancy.)

No I don't mean that in anyway as an excuse or justification, I try very hard not to make excuses for what i do here or IRL, I save no souls and break no promises, just stating a fact.

No. If Jeff/supermods feel I am breaking any rule then they will delete it/my posts/me. Like I said, I am not forcing anyone to read it.

COME ON man that is a cop out. If someone does not ALREADY KNOW that you have spoilers in your posts, they would have no reason NOT to read your posts. People are going to read your signature and reach the END of it before they even realize what its talking about for sure.

And on top of that, its GOING to create problems. People are NOT going to want to see it, and they're going to comment on it. You won't be doing it, but others are going to be randomly turning threads off topic wherever you post. Maybe I am overestimating how many Harry Potter ans there are on here, so maybe it doesn't matter.

I just don't see what you are gaining from this, in that I dont believe you can really get so much pleasure from discouraing people from reading and ruining a story that means a lot to some people.

Well you felt it was stupid to restrict conversations about Harry Potter to one thread in Printed Matter. No dont bs me AGAIN. I said you are LYING about the fact that this has nothing to do with this thread, because you putting that in your signature is ignoring the fact that there is a PLACE for posting about Harry Potter, and in the case of spoilers its in IFIOTW, not just 'wherever you want'.

You have no business putting EVERY OTHER MODERATOR ON THE WEBSITE in the position of having to edit YOUR posts just because you are insisting on being an asshole to so many totse members.

I've already received somewhere in the neighbhorhood of a dozen emails asking me what is going on, and I dont have anything to tell them other than "I advise you not to read anything Jackketch posts, I'm sorry that another moderator is behaving in this way, but I'm doing everything I can to resolve the situation"

Yes, it is. In fact, the intricate plot and the fantastic characters are why people read it.

hehehe.

That is a rather skewed reading list.

Perhaps you could use a little Harry Potter in your life?

pathetic ?!

Did I miss something?

I thought we were talking about adults who read a children's book and take it so SRSly.

What I'm doing is nasty and 'sad', no question. But the pathetic and childish ones are those who think HP is important.

Its a book, people.

bee-oh-oh-kay

Y'know?

Anyone posting on totse should know that everything they hold dear is open to ridicule and abuse.

When someone posts that they want to rape meta's daughter do we see sambob breaking rules by posting threads which disclose private stuff said on M&A or even starting a list for those who feel hurt and who think SOMETHING MUST BE DONE about nasty hurtful posts ?

Do we fuck.

Now excuse me please I want to go back to jerking off over all the ANGRY emails I have had from butthurt Harry Potter Fanboyz .

What is truly disappointing in my eyes is that young intelligent, literate and otherwise fairly rational people like you and bangbang get so obsessed about a book about a boy wizard who runs at walls.

One of the brit papers today put it rather nicely (paraphrased) "Lets hope she keeps her word and doesn't write another HP book. The boy has become a man. Maybe now we can all grow up too"

It has nothing to do with 'nasty hurtful posts', it is the idea of a moderator preying upon regulars for their own personal satisfaction.

Nobody is obsessed with the books that I know of, YOU are blowing things up trying to gain support for your actions. If you are such an advocate of 'free speech' (which I'm sure is what you will try to call it), why aren't you an advocate of peoples right to read what they want to without being ridiculed for it? And why are you still BITCHING ABOUT IT after you said the ISSUE HAD ALREADY BEEN SETTLED? If the issue had been settled, then you would be posting about it in the proper forums, not adding it to your signature, and thereore posting about such a sensitive issue ALL OVER THE FORUMS. GROW UP and dont try to BULLSHIT us that it has anything to do with free speech because ALL ANYONE SEES is a pathetic guy trying to get his jollies by trying to cause grief to his fellow moderators and posters on totse.com. If you dislike us that much, why the fuck are you still here??

I just do not see why you are insulting OUR intelligence by trying to say this has nothing to do with this thread, or is a free speech issue.

Well if you used your intelligence you would have noticed that the original issue in this thread was settled. I have made a point of not challenging Euda's authority in his forum by posting a spoiler. I disagree with his decision about the posting of spoilers in PM but he's made the rule and I won't question it in front of users. Therefore the matter is settled.

How you can tell anyone to 'grow up' after your behaviour on PM is a question that frankly not only I am wondering about. I've now had almost as many emails about that as I have had hate mail from those non-obsessing fans (non-obsessing according to you).

edit* it seems Euda has had enough of the thread too.

Nothing in that thread is anything that another mod hasn't said before me, I'm usually the one defending you.

And you're still giving me this BS about 'the matter is settled', if the MATTER WAS SETTLED, you wouldn't be trolling every single other forum on totse you post in, by posting spoilers for a damn book. If its such a non important children's book, then why do you insist on trying to ruin it for people?

And you're still giving me this BS about 'the matter is settled', if the MATTER WAS SETTLED, you wouldn't be trolling every single other forum on totse you post in, by posting spoilers for a damn book. You're linking two seperate issues. Which I'm sure you feel justified in doing but they aren't.

If its such a non important children's book, then why do you insist on trying to ruin it for people? Because i AM a pathetic guy getting his jollies by causing grief to Harry Potter fans on totse.com. Don't you get that? It really IS that simple. You are a liberty to read into my actions what you will , hell put me on the Grassy Knoll for all I care but the truth is very simple (as most of the regulars on S&A , who perhaps know me a bit better than you, all know.)

There's nothing wrong with being a cunt, but I do think this is going out of your way. Don't forget that most of Totse's members are kids, people who've been following the books since they were 7 or 8 or 9.

I'm not about to read this shit, but from what I can glance at this getting fucking ridiculous. If you dont want your ending to be spoiled, stay the fuck off the internet. When everyone and their mother were screaming "SNAPE KILLED DUMBLEDORE" everywhere IRL and on the net last time around, you can safely bet that the same thing will happen with the rest of the series.

This is like crying a British flood when you saw goatse/tubgirl/harlequin fetus/etc for the first time. Everyone needs to chill the fuck out and grow a pair of balls. It is only a book for fuck's sake!

Please excuse me while I facepalm.

Uhm andwhat makes you think I'm not a long time poster there...?

Anyways I'm guessing anyone who hasn't read the latest drivel from the pen of Rowling by now probably isn't a big enough fan to get intense about a spoiler.

Its been fun though.

I just don't see what's interesting about them.

Greetings :)

After a week, I have finished the book spoiler free. I would have finished it sooner if it were not for my crazy work schedule. It was also nice to get off the internet for awhile! However, teh nets are a tempting mistress... So I have returned...

I was surprised to see this thread have so many (more) replies. I decided to read them, and feel both grateful and disgusted. I am grateful for mods like sambob, who can put personal qualms aside and defend reason. I am grateful for Euda who carries THE sword of reason, and eloquently slashes through any emotionally driven argument.

I am disgusted with mods like jack who let their anger and hate override their reason. I am disgusted with the choices he made to hurt other posters, and put a load on other mods.

I think JiveTalka said it best:

"...that's the most childish thing I've seen a mod do."

I really hope that &totse does not fall into the arms of people like jack who thrive on judging and hurting others.

Sounds like someone has been running their mouth off. Anyway kAtE still gets my vote for it (even if she did neg rep me).
