Drugs + Creative Writing
It being summer, and me wanting to be a creative writing major and being a avid drug user, I was suprised the other day when I figured the two might go together. I recently started reading Hunter S Thompson, who as most of you probably know, was a awsome writer who wrote about his experiences on acid, mescaline, etc.
I'm thinking of trying to do that kind of style, not imitate it, but branch from it, and was wondering if any of you have experience with writing while intoxicated. A idea I thought of would be to use a tape recorder to capture whatever thought pops up in my head, and type it later, and string it together, to prevent the buzzkill of sitting down and going on a computer during a trip.
Good idea? Experiences? What kind of drugs would be most interesting to record my thoughts on?

Re: Drugs + Creative Writing
What I do is I write my poems or short stories while high, but then I go back and revise them when I'm sober.

Re: Drugs + Creative Writing
I think Rizzo used to do a bit of this, if I recall correctly.
I've heard of people using tape recorders for trips. So I guess it would work. I don't see why not.
Sounds like a good idea to me.
And as for drugs to write on. Well, I remember reading a poem this year written by some guy while he was on opium. Personally, I'd start with marijuana and go from there.

I remember his account of being on mescaline for the first time. Was a great read. Songs Of The Doomed, I think...
Also, Great Shark Hunt when he decides they can't land in Texas with their current stash from their flight from Mexico, so him and a friend eat a bunch of MDA, LSD and Seconal on the plane then he tries stuffing like 10 spansules of speed into the tongues of his shoes.

Re: Drugs + Creative Writing
drugs don't really affect my artistic side. i have always been into playing guitar, writing, drawing etc and when i get high nothing changes except for my focus (which increases).
edit- as for drugs that make writing better, in my personal experience i have found opium, oxy (any opiate, alcohol in small doses, coke and amphetamine to all help a lot.

Re: Drugs + Creative Writing
Pot is always good for free thinking. Acid too.
I have a microrecorder I use to keep track of ideas.
Just don't try to record music on acid. I tried it once and spent 6 hours trying to mix it to no avail.

I sat down at a bench, took out a notebook, and spewed vomit all over it. I quickly laminated the bunch through a process I learned while stuck in the North Pole. A gruesome sight, to be sure.
So no, I don't think drugs are very good for creative writing.

i really like absurdity writing i just can't find enough of it though its a shame. any way you should check out justin curfman hes an underground writer/video maker. he writes in this style...simply mind blowing i promise. anyway here is my contibution...
A group sits at a picnic table made entirely out of meat. It is hot and they are all hungry. As they sit in hunger the table starts to cook. They start to salivate and soon after they die of starvation. They were all vegans. They become a new layer to the table.

Re: Drugs + Creative Writing
the few times i took creative writing like classes, happened to coinside with periods of poly-drug use in my life, which therefore influenced my writing to a degree...
in which i got A's, and wrote a cool thing about kicking dope sick as shit, a year after the fact, high as shit on dope! haha

Re: Drugs + Creative Writing
Adderall for length.
Last year I had English first period and before school I'd pop a few addys.
I'm not the best writer...but I remember on multiple occasions writing A+ papers on adderall and looking back wondering how the fuck I did that. I also remember writing a page and a half for a simple question that I could have answered in a paragraph or two.
Other than that...I don't really know.

Snort some dialudid. You'll become a class writer. I did it before state testing and wrote a fucking novel for a science essay thing.
Plus I've written some songs while nodding out. It's pretty cool

I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with you there. Your ideas make sense to you when you're high, but when you're sober, they are non-sensical, crazy-talk.
Although I usually do think my ideas developed while high are interesting and useful to the sober world. When I'm sober.

Re: Drugs + Creative Writing
I had a ritual a couple months ago when i'd go for a few smokes on this bench near my house then go home and write.
Got a couple chapters done, but i've stopped now because i've transcribed everything neccesary from that particular high.
My plan is to go on a mission or something, just pack my bag with supplies and cross the country documenting everything then transcribing it at a later date - In a sober mind.
Want to get some psychs for that, and various uppers as well. Alcohol doesn't help with my creativity in the slightest and weed knocks me out

Re: Drugs + Creative Writing
Finally, someone who thinks like I do!
I prefer drinking and then smoking marijuana. About maybe 3-4 shots of rum/coke, and a fat j. I, at least, am known to write... interesting... things while drunk. I apparently made some kind of "revelations" about humankind, time, sciences, etc. while intoxicated. Don't know why or how but I seem to write better, syntactically and gramatically and all when intoxicated. It just seems to give me some kind of motivation. If you don't mind, can you send me a couple of things that you write? I always enjoy reading other people's work and especially if you're going to take after Thompson I'd love to read some of your stuff. You can message me/reply to this if you want to read some of mine.
Have a good time man. You're destined for fame.

Re: Drugs + Creative Writing
Fuck yeah, drugs are great for creative writing. Personally I like Uppers, E, or a combination.
I find combining lower doses of uppers with hallucinogens such as acid help[s the tripped out thoughts flow through easier. Plus uppers are just great for me anyway since I have symptoms of ADD and they give me the focus I need.

It's abstractly about the sublimality of sex. You have to analyze poems for them to make sense.
