So how did MJ become this demonized scapegoat?
Especially back in the 30s during the "Reefer Madness" era? Were people that naive? Or were the "do-rights" just looking for something else to scrutinize as being a bad behavior?
Seems like society likes to gang up on certain things just to make them feel better about themselves.
How did immoral shit like rape, crime, etc get associated with it as well?

It was mainly demonized by hearst newspaper to eliminate hemp as a powerful industrial competitor for a variety of corporations.
The bill was passed during an era where drugs all over were becoming illegal, so such a bill seemed usual and even necessary, considering the (untrue) consequences of...a single toke. Not to mention cannabis was referred to with a Mexican slang word, marijuana, unknown to most Americans at the time.
If they had known which plant it was, the masses surely would have protested this.
Afterward, information about hemp and its usefulness were removed from textbooks, and it was soon only remembered as a horrible drug. There lots more information on it then that though. Check this out.
