The "get to know people" thread
Someone did this a while ago, but since then I've noticed a few new people around, so I think it might be nice, and a bit fun, to have a thread to post a few things about yourself. Gearheads related mind, not "Oh, I'm 6'1", about 16 stone....." and the like.
I'll start off, follow my pattern if you like but feel free to add anything relevant you may like to.
So let's see.
I started working on cars when I was about 10, helping my dad work on his old Ford CVH engine, changing spark plugs and the like, and now that I own a Rover, I'm basically rebuilding my engine every few hundred miles, so I feel I have a moderate knowledge of engines, not enough to work as a mechanic, but enough to do the work myself on all but the most complex of tasks.
Er, I'd have to say my favourite manufacturer would be Rover. Innate luxury for a very low price, and actually, contrary to popular belief, rather well engineered.
Thus, my favourite engine would be the Rover K-Series, very technologically advanced in 1989, and still holding it's own when they went bust in 2005, and the good old V8. Nowt like a raw, American derived V8 to brighten your day. I do like the raw viciousness of the Rolls Royce Griffin too. 36 litres of twin supercharged V12 madness.
If I had an infinite supply of money, I'd probably buy a Bristol Fighter T, just so I could pull up next to a Veyron owner and go "Yeah, look at your shitty, underpowered, glorified VW. What's that? 11hp less than me? Yeah, bollocks to you!"
But realistically, any decent Q car (or sleeper) tickles my fancy. The very reason I'm buying a Rover 620 turbo. Pull up next to some guy in his 3 litre BMW 5-series in my standard looking "old mans car" and then leave him standing. Bliss. Nothing as smile inducing as a boring, standard looking car with a big fucking hefty engine hidden away.
Err, I can't really think of much else, so post away gearheads, it will be interesting to read about some of you.

Re: The "get to know people" thread
I errr, know how to check the oil and drive an auto for the sole reason that I don't fit into our manual car?
I also drive a toyota cressida?
Errr, and I'm currently deciding whether I'd prefer a V8 vantage volante or a DB9 volante...but in either case in racing green.
The v8 is nudged ahead because it has that exhaust valve that lets everyone else know how nicely tuned your engine is...in like a mile radius.

Re: The "get to know people" thread
20 years old, got into nuts n bolts at an early age.
started with lego, then bike, then 4 wheeler, then finally got my first car. and it broke down, like, all the fucking time. and there being no service station i had to learn how to fix small things myself.
got into metalworking, which often involves needing to turn a wrench.

Re: The "get to know people" thread
A veritable oxy-moron, no less.
I never really noticed it, as I am rather drunk.
But really, by and by, Rover's are quite reliable.

Re: The "get to know people" thread
i'm 15 and i was raised on british sports cars but my dad could never aford them.
He was more into aeroplanes, but he did have 3 HG kingswoods. He sold two when my sister was born and the last one when we moved.
My mum and dad broke up and after awhile mum got a boyfriend who was more into cars, he was into british sports cars two and had an MGB.
He wanted a car for the winter and decided on a 260Z 2+2 (which he didnt end up buying), when i saw it i nearly crapped myself. Up until then i hadnt really been into cars.
about four years passed with me obsessing about datsuns. then i got talking with my dads friend who is also into datsuns, he ofered me his parts car for free.
i thought about and got a tow truck to tow it to my place.
Now i'm the proud owner of a 1976 Datsun 240K sedan.
Things i like about datsuns: relieable, cheap, can be tuned too go fast, good looking.
Things i hate about cars in general: cars that are designed to be ugly just to draw attention(french cars and new nissans) when a datsun is ugly they made it as bland as possible to not draw attention. economy cars that are made badly because the CEO's want as many profits as the bigger manufacturers (hyundai).
Favorite engine: Nissan L28 with triple webers hanging off the side.

Re: The "get to know people" thread
About Me:
Just turned 20.
I started working on small 4 stroke engines with my friend when I was 15. We built a lot of crazy go karts and mini bikes and blew a lot of old engines up. By 17 we were building some halfway decent things. After that we started wanting to work on some bigger stuff. Thats when he got his '78 Ford f-150. We fixed the rust, bondoed the hell out of the body, then sanded it down and painted it. Engine was a 351 Windsor that ran great. A little too great. We ended up shearing the u-joint and when we went to fix it we found that the frame was rotted out. He got rid of it shortly after. We went back to mini bikes for a couple years Then I got my '78 Ford Mustang II which we are currently working on (mostly me). Anyway, I have a couple shop manuals for my car and am teaching myself about it and am doing as much of the work myself as I can.
About my car:
Its a 1978 Ford Mustang II Coupe with Dark jade Metallic paint and Chamois Interior
The engine (2.3l 4 cyl) was just rebuilt and has had a header(one) installed and an emissions delete done. Exhaust is 2 1/4 pipe, no cat, and is topped off with a Flowtech Warlock muffler. Slightly rice, but doesn't sound it. It sounds a little more throaty and doesn't sound like a weed eater. People say it sounds like a V-6.

Re: The "get to know people" thread
Me i'm 21 i've learned most of what I know from my dad and some from a step dad. Been around cars my whole life mostly lifted 4x4's. I also pit for a buddy who races hobby stock. I've built motors and rear-ends but no trannys (would like to tear into one sometime) I've also learned a lot of hands on just from owning so many shit-box cars growing up and being broke and having to rely on myself to fix them. I currently drive a bone stock 94 chevy short box 4x4. But i've got quite a few projects, recently sold off a few (had to many lying around going no where) And lastly i'm a big 4x4 enthusiast.
