The FaceBook Epidemic
This seems to be gaining popularity much faster than MySpace.
One thing I just can't stand about these types of things it the whole friend-sharing concept. The fact that once you set up an account, everyone you know will become connected to everyone else you know.
I like to have things separated. I have different groups of friends with which I share different interests. I have just generally had some bad experiences with certain people from one aspect of my life crossing to another. Especially since some of the people I hang out with are major gossipers, some of whom even have ties to my family. So once that barrier is broken, there is no distinction. Everything I say under any circumstances is at risk of being dinner time conversation at the next family gathering.
Frankly, I can't take that kind of pressure. Especially when I'm out to have a good time, and let loose.
Everyone and their mother seems to have Facebook, and they all ask me every time I see them if I have it yet.
I keep repeating my mantra, that I am boycotting Facebook and any of it's counterparts. But they repeat themselves relentlessly.
I can see how it would be an amazing tool for communicating with people, not to mention meeting new people, maybe even potential dating prospects. But at what price?
I'm guessing not everyone runs the same risks that I do when they use it...
So is it as popular here on totse? (I've been away for a while so I don't know if it's mentioned as often as it is IRL).

Re: The FaceBook Epidemic
I got a myspace once; which was in retrospect a pretty dumb idea.
Because now all my friends can see that I have virtually no friends, but I can't delete it, because they would know that was the reason.
It's a paradox to rival those proposed by that titan of titans, TimeCop (http://www.taser.org/images/timecop.jpg)

Meh, anyone who's anyone has Facebook at University. The one thing I like about it is the photo tagging system, it's always nice to have photos of me taken by other people.
But I hate the idea of "friend-whoring" - adding people who you've never spoken to in real life just to make it seem like you're 'popular'.

Re: The FaceBook Epidemic
The whole concept is freaking retarded. It's not that I am against social networking via the internet. I've done it myself. Basically, high school kids fuck it up for everyone else i guess.
I remember a time when putting your photo on the internet was considered a pretty stupid thing too. When did that change?

Heh, I have the same problem. I remedy it by accepting friend requests from all those bullshit spam profiles.

What's Facebook? Luckily I seem to have been spared from this epidemic. Perhaps it's more an endemic, which is just as bad but it means that the government manages to shut it up more.

I gave both a myspace and a face book account.
I still use myspace a lot more and I think it will be a while until anybody can loosen myspace's grip. Myspace just has soo many things. It's very customizable and very easy to add music too. I'm not saying Face book isn't, i just haven't gotten a chance to play around with it as much as I have with myspace.
What the impression I got, face book was more college oriented than myspace.

thats what the limited profile thing is for.
so your mom cant see your drunk ass.
also great for hiding things from school officials... RAs and such.
face book is actually useful at times, myspace is filled with too many camwhore middle school girls to have any productive functionality.

Re: The FaceBook Epidemic
I've got facebook. I rarely add people unless I've got something immediate to say to them. I have realized that when a girl "pokes" you it really means she wants you to poke her possibly in her ass. Anyways, facebooks kinda like 6 degrees of seperation. You can go from anybody to anybody pretty easily. I dunno what the function is but people can write shit on your wall they could just call you and say. Dunno, everybody else's got it so I do which is probably the only reason people get facebook.

Facebook became an "epidemic" when they stopped requiring a college email address to sign up. Then all the kiddies signed up because they were getting bored of MySpace and brought the typical friend and picture whoring. It sucks kangaroo balls now.

Yeah. I feel the same way too. Then again, I rarely talk to anybody that is not from my school, a relative, or a childhood friend on myspace or face book. I get like 3 requests every week from some random girls and its soo obvious its a cam whore. At first I would just add them to make bulk in my friend list but then the comments I would get would just be annoying.
Only one time did this random girl actually talked to me on msn. I ended up blocking her. Too fucking creepy.

Does anyone know a way around the "honesty box" add-on? Like, a way to find out who posted something? Random girl just tells me "i've always had a crush on you :)" and I don't give a fuck if she's shy, I wanna know who it is so I can make a move.

I signed up to Myspace before I had any idea how big it was. I thought it was just another MSN Passport-type thing, and all I knew was that to see the newsletter for a band I liked I'd have to have one.
They're mild amusement for internet terrorism though. My friends and I posting pictures of a naked shemale several hundred times on people's comments.

Yeah facebook and myspace are gay for this reason. It gives people who never get attention the chance to get some!!!!
whether it be by posting bulletins every five minutes....you all know what im talking about...you log on and Karen flooded the fuckin bulletins again.
lol anyways i think they both are cool for picking up chicks, finding parties, letting the world know how awesome you really are, and for evidence in the court of law.
i dunno when im gonna blog up my blog and start blogging.

Re: The FaceBook Epidemic
A few months ago Facebook was fucking great, so much more interconnected than Myspace is. Now all that application bullshit on facebook is pissing me off.
I use Facebook to keep up to date with friends, organise stuff between friends, and look at loads of photos of fit girls.
Myspace is shit. The only reason I'd use it would be to try to talk some schoolgirl into fucking me, which would be fucking hard as she'd have one of those fucked up "customised" shitty flashy animated profiles that make me want to smash the screen whenever I open one.

The whole family dinner thing, completely would happen to me, too. My mom didn't like my first girlfriend, I was an idiot and thought I was in love so I didn't care and posted shit about her ALL over my MySpace. Of course, my brother was on my friends list and told my mom. Even after I'd convinced her I didn't even talk to the girl.
So, thus, yes these websites suck. But yes, I also have a MySpace.
(only because some of my friends don't use emails, or AIM)

Re: The FaceBook Epidemic
The only reason I like Myspace a TINY bit better is because I find it has less losers on it than Facebook. I assume the reason to be because their parents are to gay to let them get a Myspace account because "Facebook is just so much safer my little suzie could get raped by a 50 year old on myspace" Which is completely untrue because nobody in their right minds would want to rape one of those arrogant, fat, ugly and ungrateful little bitchs.
And if they get raped its cause the're a whore. And most of them are.

I am a slave to my facebook account sadly. At first I refused to get it, but then once I got to college, it started to seem like a good idea and actually was. If you miss a class you can message someone and find out homework, lessons, etc...
I know the problem of having shit posted by other people that you don't want going around. But its pretty easy to fix. Just click a couple of buttons and no one can see it except you.
All-in-all it has been helpfull at times for school, and when you need to kill a few minutes.

Opera isnt on Linux, as if I would use the bastard son of the town drunk as a browser...

It's reasonably useful for working things out with large groups of friends. I got one at the urgings of the girl I'm interested in, so I couldn't say no. All the apps, or at least a lot of them, are pretty stupid. "Top Friends" pisses me off. Rating your friends? WTF!?

the top friends thing is precisely why i hate myspace so much. that and the amazing ammount of people who dont know that black text is unreadable on a black and dark blue background among other things of that nature.
facebook is alright, but i still would rather do most of my socializing in real life

I don't go anywhere near that shit. The closest thing I have is a Cardomain page, and my only two friends there are people I actually communicate with on a regular basis. Social networking sites are a nexus for stupidity, in my opinion. I open any random profile, and within thirty seconds I'm convinced that person is a fucking retard.
Or, you know, perhaps I'm just a lonely guy in a basement who is too much of an outcast to get on the bandwagon with everyone else.

Haha so true. I don't *get* myspace. To me it seems a way to have people say how cool you are in front of everyone else :S
I have one but thats only so anyone that knows me but doesn't know I exist online can look and find me. I actually found my best friend that moved away and we lost contact of one another for like 10+ years, and the same with a girl I knew in High School.
I haven't talked to either of them though since I added them :p
Good to know they are still alive none-the-less lol
