Default Finally Accepted.. (story about my kids.. :p)

It was a rough road, but I think she's finally come around.

My daughter had not been taking too well to her new baby brother.. She's come quite a ways from when we first brought him home 10 weeks ago..

At first she would throw tantrums lasting AT LEAST 30mins.. She progessed out of the tantrums and into the, "I don't want baby near me.." stage.. She was currently in the acknowledging baby stage.. lol.. But that seemed to change today..

Before today.. She would say, "Hi, baby," when we told her to, but that was it. Today, the baby had his 2 month Well Baby Check, fully equipped with SHOTS.. The appointment was fine and everything was going well.. My daughter wasn't even as impatient as she usually is.. She sat in the stroller and watched the doctor do his thing..

Now before, in the car, we were working on the the word 'doctor.' I found it appropriate since thats where we'd be spending a portion of our day. :) She would say, "Hi. doctor! Bye, doctor! Thank-you, doctor!" So when we were in the exam room, she continued to say, "Hi, doctor!" etc.

The doctor finished his examination of my son and left for the nurse to administer the shots. I held my sons arms down to prevent too much wiggling and my daughter remained seated in the stroller, watching what was happening.. The nurse poked my son and he began to scream and cry..

My daughter was so shocked over what just happened, she gasped loudly. She had her face scrunched up like she normally does when she's angry, and she was crying and yelling, "Not nice, doctor! Not nice, doctor! Baby! Baby! Not nice, doctor!" She handled it much worse than my son did.. and he was the one getting poked..

Although, she was greatly saddened by what had just happened, I was very pleased.. I'm fairly certain that my daughter, in fact, LOVES her new baby brother..

It was an exciting day for me.. :)

When an unfamiliar party comes along, her protective instinct shines through.

At least of she continues the tantrums in times to come, you will know she still sees him as her younger brother rather than simply a parent thief.

I hate hearing babies getting shots.

When my little brother was months old (he's 3 now), I remember him getting shots once, the sound was horrible.

My daughter used to get EXTREMELY jealous when she would see me with another baby. I used to babysit for a 7 month old baby when she was about 18 months old and she used to actually growl at him and try to push him off of my lap! She'd pat me and say, "Mommy MINE" and then shake her finger at him.

My mom has told me that my older sister tried to give me away and repeatedly asked when I was going back to the hospital! She's 6 years older than me...It must've been tough to get a sibling at that age.

And I'm such a wimp...I never got my daughter vaccinated until she was FOUR because I couldn't stand the screaming. I actually cried when she got her shots and it was very apparant to me that the nurses thought I was a total crazy person.:P

You are not ready to be a parent. On that note, what exactly did you do when your daughter tried to push the other infant off of your lap? Discipline her?

She was 18 months old, so no I didn't "dicipline her." An 18 month old is still a baby, you know. I would just lift her onto my lap too or try to distract her or something. She eventually got used to him and then his family moved away!:P

As for the shots...I waited until she was two because of autism. I have read in many sources that early vaccinations are a major suspected cause of the rise in autism in the last 40 years. After that, yeah it was just because I didn't want her to hurt. Damn I'm a sorry mother that I don't like to see my child in pain.Roll Eyes (Sarcastic) I know the vaccinations are important which is why I did bite the bullet and get them done in the year before she started school.

I start disciplining when it is very apparent that they know right from wrong.. Not that this is a situation where your daughter should've been punished, she was just jealous was all.. But it is my opinion that in other areas, an 18 month-old definitely knows what things are allowed, and what things are not..

So even though you are saying that your 18 month old has the ability to speak, she doesn't have the ability to understand discipline?

You are over protective of your child, especially when you don't want her to "hurt". Sorry, but pain is a part of life, and just because a baby is crying, doesn't mean they are dying.

It's better to just redirect a child who is under 2. Even though she might've understood that something was "wrong" a child that young lacks impulse control.

And I think most mothers are "overprotective" of their children.

I mean, do you always go by the book? To say that 6 months is going to make a tremendous difference in the emotional and mental fortitude of your infant is a little over the top to me. When I say discipline I don't mean hit your child, but at least make her acknowledge what she is doing is wrong, before things really get sticky.

Lol, precisely. She just doesn't want to own up to her issues with self-worth.

To be honest I almost never go "by the book" when it comes to parenting.:P I mean I read parenting books for advice and such, but I almost always just end up doing my own thing. I picked two years old as the age where I really felt she was ready to understand a "time out" and what it meant. Maybe she WAS ready at 18 months, but I really feel it's better to err on the side of being too liberal than too strict when dealing with a baby. She's 6 years old now and very well behaved...Despite the lack of punishment in her early years!:P

And at 1-2 years of age 6 months does make a tremendous difference in emotional and intellectual development.

I do agree that there is a difference in that 6 months. I know that a child's brain develops quickly, but their ability to learn and to understand is still underestimated by a lot of parents.

Which is why children are able to learn sign language before they can even speak. It has been shown that their ability to learn is phenomenal and anything you tell them they will instantly remember and apply. You know, games like peek-a-boo and such are an example of this. Having humor is an example of intelligence as well. So all I am saying is that even though they have a short attention span, you could still with a positive attitude discipline her in a way so she understands not to do that. (That being trying to push the other baby off.)

So if you say your child is well behaved then congrats. I'm always interested to see how people's kids do to see what works and what doesn't. In 10 years I'm going to be asking what she's like.

CMon, you can prove everything else but how do you know he's fat? And what's wrong with fat boys? If my mom could have afforded to feed me enough to get fat when I was a kid I'd be fat for the novelty of it. What do you propose he do if he is in fact fat? Maybe it's glandular or he ate too many watermelon seeds and one grew or something...

Poor Piggy. :(

I don't insult people to get reassurance about my own existence. Your complete lack of understanding of this whole situation is what you should be pitying.

Lol, insulting Xiao Mei? When did that happen? About things I could never understand? Why? Only women can give birth to children so only women can understand how to raise them? I have worked with children for a long time, and I have seen first hand what works and what doesn't work with children ranging from infant stage to ten year olds. You don't know anything about me yoyo. Yet you still think you're going to get by on the same bullshit assumptions everyone here uses.

Now its, "when I reached puberty"? Do you know when guys reach puberty? I am also enjoying your repetitive use of the word "fat", as if that has any relevance to this conversation.

I know that you have self-esteem issues, mother issues, boyfriend issues, intimacy issues, and basically everything else under the sun that makes you fucked up in the head. Do you need me to fly to Europe so you can cry on my shoulder yoyobek? Would you like it if you actually had someone willing to do that for you in your life? Tell me why you're sad.

Well in 10 years she'll be 16, so that might not be the best time to ask...:P

That is a good point, but how teenagers act is a pretty good indication of parenting. So if she goes buck wild, lol. I am sure that isn't going to happen though.

Wow, this thread got NASTY!

Back on topic; Congrats, HT, it must be a real relief for you to finally see your daughter coming round. Before you know it, it'll be the little one being jealous of big sister for going to school first, getting boyfriends first, learning to drive first... you've still got all that fun to come (and I speak as a little sister!) Still, sounds like you're doing a great job.
