I'd like a small 2U server with about 1-2ghz power and 1-2gb ram. I'd like it to run Linux Slackware-current (12). No video card or monitor (or keyboard and mouse for that matter). Oh, and a nice T1 with good upload.

My specs are a bit lacking as time has passed:

AMD Athlon 64 2.20GHz, 1600MHz FSB, 512KB L2 cache
512 MB ram (shut up)
ATI Radeon Xpress 200 128 MB
3d Labs Permedia 2 2D&3D (old card stripped from old machine for dual monitor action)
200 GB HDD
40 GB HDD
7 USB
1 Firewire
5 All purpose configurable audio jacks (surround sound capable)
Standard 10/100 NIC
Obse1337 Coaxnet/Game port/Ethernet NIC (10 MB only)
4 PCIe ports.

Cost: ~$650 (plus added video card, hard drive disk, )(Circa 2005)

Its running Debian Etch GNU/Linux Kernel 2.6.18-4. It CAN run windows, but who would WANT to?

Im planning to add a gig or so of ram and a dual head nVidia card once my pay increase is in full swing.

Edit: I seemed to miss the point of this thread, so heres my dream specs:

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 (FOUR cores, 2.66 ghz per core, 2 x 4MB L2 cache) $999
3 GB RAM (4 is a waste) $120 x 3 = $360
Dual nVidia GeForce 8800 $400 x 2 = $800
Twin Optoma WXGA DDR DLP Projectors $1300 x 2 = $2600
3TB internal storage $400 x 3 = $1200
Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Sound Card $100
Belkin - N1 Wireless-N Desktop Card $100
NETGEAR - Gigabit PCI Desktop Adapter $30
Really big fucking stereo $400
Wireless mouse and keyboard $20 (ebay)
ATI TV Wonder 650 Tuner Card $130
GNU/Linux $0

$6739.00

System will sit next to a couch, keyboard and mouse will sit on a coffee table in front of couch, everything faces a blank wall. Twin screens projected on said wall. Stereo will have a speaker in each corner, and the sub udner the couch

Dell D600 laptop, £200 in this config about 2 months ago:
1.6ghz Pentium M
Dell TrueMobile WiFi
Intel Bluetooth module
1gb DDR266 RAM
40gb 5400rpm HD
14.1" 1450x1280 TFT
ATi Radeon 9000
52watt hour 6-cell battery

Capable of running almost anything apart from new games and Vista Aero. I don't game at all and I like Xp Pro so it's great...

My server:
Dual 733mhz PIII Coppermine
512mb RDRAM
20gb Seagate HD
Some crappy 8mb graphics card

Runs IIS and CGI/PHP scripts with ease on a broadband connection. Longest continuous uptime is 2 months, but I had to reboot after installing some updates.

On the "should not get" list I think I should add the following brands:
- Tiny
- Emachines (motherboards tend to just fry themselves very quickly)
- Philips (horrible support and drivers)
- Almost any budget laptop which isn't made by a big brand. It will be made badly, consumables like batteries will be hard to get and support will be patchy. In addition to this, parts will be virtually unobtainable at a good price.

I doubt you'll get it. Once I get around 3.4, my temps get to around 70C. That's with some massive heatsink/fan I bought.
