Question 5.4" LCD casemod

i had one of those gamecube mobile monitors, and wanted to use the screen in it for a casemod. so far i've taken apart the mobile monitor and connected the RGB to a VGA cord. i connected the horizontal sync on the VGA card to the composite sync on the LCD, and have the LCD powered through the power supply of the computer. once it is all set up, i'll need to change the computer output from horizontal to composite to get it to work right, but thats not till later.

i am currently running a geforce 6600 video card (which i need to replace because the fan on it melted), and will soon be using 2 monitors on it, so i can't use those outputs for this screen. since i don't have a motherboard that supports SLI, i was thinking of getting a PCI (not PCI-E) video card and running that to the internal monitor. i don't want to use a lot of money for this, and since the monitor is only 640x480 (i might be able to push 800x600), and i won't be playing games through it, i was thinking a 64MB card would be enough. the card i was looking to get only supports up to DirectX 8.1, and since my computer currently has DirectX 9.0c, i was wondering if they could work together, or they'll both be pushed down to 8.1. my computer runs XP right now, and i don't plan to go to Vista anytime soon, btw.

so my questions are, with a setup such as this, will i be able to run DirectX 9 on my monitors while the 5.4" runs at 8.1, or do i need to pay more for a better video card that'll run 9? is a 64MB card enough, or should i go to 128MB? does anyone know a program that i could use to get the horizontal sync to change to a composite sync? (i did a quick google search of it, but didn't come up with much. i tried PowerStrip, but that didn't help too much, or maybe i didn't know where to look)

thanks for the help in advance. i'll post pics when it's all said an done.

I'm not quite sure what you're on about with the horizontal sync - I assume you mean VGA. Horizontal sync is one signal which makes up the VGA picture.

You'll need to get a video card with either S-Video or composite out. You can then connect this straight to the monitor, although you'll be lucky to get more that 640x480 out of it.

I'm pretty sure you can't use it in a dualhead setup with most cards though, only a few I've seen can do it. Can the screen use a VGA input? You'd get a much better picture and you can use dualhead too.

Smile Re: 5.4" LCD casemod

i found this site:

http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/742987-post1.html

and found out what i needed to do there to attach a VGA plug to the LCD. i think the thing with the horizontal sync is that spot on the VGA card (pin 13) is what the composite sync on the LCD hooks up to, then i change the output (on the computer) to send a composite sync signal through the horizontal sync pin on the VGA.

i just went to a store and talked to the guy there, and he said that a 64MB card would be fine, but they don't usually support DirectX 09.0, and if i used something that was 8.1, it'd drop the whole computer down to that as well. he referred me to the geforce 5200 256MB PCI card, so now i'm going to see if another card can o what i want for less money.

any other suggestions / tips / help?

Ahh I see what you mean now, yes you will be getting full VGA and not composite.

Follow the diagram and take the centre pin of your GFX card's video out to the composite sync of the GameCube screen.

i did. i need a program that will change the output of the screen to composite sync now.

btw, should this be in DIY? i don't know how to move it, so if a mod can move it for me, that'd be great.

Look in the settings of the GFX card under the Display Properties and turn the TV-out on. That will enable the composite out if you have one.

If not, easiest thing is to buy a crappy PCI GFX card which has composite out. Run it at the same time as your main one.
