Default sports cars + snow?

well i've been saving up to buy a new (used) car for a while now and i've finally got about $4g saved up so im lookin at this sweetass '91 camaro (i've always wanted a sports car).

thing is, i live in canada in an area where from january to april snow is pretty much guaranteed.

i know this isn't exactly a car made for snow, but i figure if i put some cinder blocks or whatever in the trunk the back end should be weighed down enough to get decent traction in the snow.

obviously badass snowstorms are gonna be out of the question but would i be all set on somewhat snowy roads? i don't want to buy this thing and not be able to use it for a third of a year nahmean.

so whatcha got to say?

Thumbs up Re: sports cars + snow?

Yeah, it's that bad. Personally I always had fun with it, and when the roads are just somewhat snowy you can keep it under control and usually not get stuck, but when the conditions are bad it can be a real hassle.

I never let snow discourage me from buying a car I wanted though. Studded tires will help, tire chains FTW. I mean hell, I drove my RWD V8 mercury through many snowstorms with regular tires and only have been stuck a handful of times.

Just pay attention to what you're doing and you'll be fine.

You don't have to have AWD or a 4 wheel drive to get around in the snow. Just take it easy and think before you do anything and you'll get to where you're going.

Weight in the back helps out quite a bit.

sports cars + snow = death, unless you're careful.

Why don't you invest in some tyre chains (or those newfangled tyre glove things)? And be sparing with the throttle, pull away in second gear and don't power out of the corners and your rear end should remain on your side of the road. Cinder blocks are a bit light so I'd recommend a bag of sand or something, that's what my granddad used to do back when we had proper winters...

A friend of mine in Minnesota has a '94 camaro. He's had it for two winters so far. I've seen him go sideways a number of times, he's gotten stuck in a snow drift once, but has yet to hit anything.

If you're really worried about it then buy a cheap pos to knock around (literally) in over the winter months. You might be able to handle a camaro in the snow but what about the idiot coming up behind you in a suburban thinking AWD = more grip than spiderman?

As long as the OP does not regard his Camaro to be a Camaro in winter... he'll be fine. There is good advice in almost every post up there. It's all about common sense. I would suggest that you do go for a car you like and enjoy driving. The snow will be tricky, but as it is... your over all "pleasure riding" will be cut drastically in winter anyways. Just take the bus or train when the snow is heavy. Also a couple of sand bags in the trunk, and an attentive driving style will get you through the little snow that's been falling in the past few years.
