reading group
I don't know about you all, but I think discussion around here would be a lot better if we were all familiar with the issues. I think that we should have some kind of reading group. It would be neat if we could all read the same book and then come on here and discuss it and any issues that it discusses. Does anyone want to do this? I don't know what sort of books people like to read, but it should be something to do with the humanities (hence where I am posting this). Post here if you want to do it and suggest some titles. I personally would like to read "Enough" by Bill Mckibben. It's about the environmental and psychological implications of living in our increasingly industrialized world.

Re: reading group
I think this is probably a pretty good idea. I'm currently reading two seprate translations of Plato's Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, & Phaedo right now (Benjamin Jowett & Hugh Treddenick's translations) if anyone is interested in ging through this one (that is if they haven't already, and I'm sure many here have) If anyone else has any suggestions for reading in the group nature, I'd be interested in hearing what others are interested in reading. Even if 4 or 5 people can get in on reading the same book and discussing it, I think this would be a good experience. Good call uselesspassion...

Re: reading group
I like this idea. Maybe even enough to make it "Official" if we get enough support.

Re: reading group
i read euthyphro, apology, and crito for an ethics class last year, and i still remember a good deal of it. i would think, however, that i would have to go back to get some of the finer points down again. i dont really have a problem with that. philosophy is good, but i think it should be open to other areas as well.
glad that some people are interested.

well I also have Noam Chomsky's Imperial Ambitions sitting on my desk right now, if anyone is into that sort of thang. I just haven't gotten to it yet. I think I might take a break from reading serious books and read something fictional and fun for once, but whenever the discussionfires up, let me know the topic, and i'll see if i can't get a hold of the book....

Re: reading group
I'm down. I think we should make it official, make just one thread/week where the book being discussed for each week is announced a week in advance so people can have time to read it. Then discussion will be open, but only to people that have actually read it, not just pointless comments from others.
Maybe 2 weeks in advance of week x, a poll can open up with 3-5 book options. So every week, there will be a discussion of week x book, announcement of week x + 1 book and poll for deciding week x + 2 book.

Heh, the totse book club. You'd think Printed Matter would've started one first.
Once I find a new job to buy used books I'd join.

Re: reading group
im surprised that no one has mentioned it before.
im just starting a book by bill mckibben about genetic engineering and its implications for humanity.
i think it will be hard to coordinate this reading group. if we can get a few more people interested, i think we should start taking suggestions for possible titles.
