Default Dealing with the spam attacks at the moment...

Is like flogging a dead fucking horse.

I'm infracting these people up to ban leve, but what's the fucking point when they can then just use a proxy and re-register?

I'm possibly alone in thinking this? But something really needs to be done about registration.
Either a 5 day delay before you can post with that account, or even close registration for a while?

I dont know.

But currently, bothering to do anything is not going to achieve much because they'll just register a new screenname.

The five day waiting period sounds like it could be a good idea.

I think delayed access sounds like a good idea. That won't stop them 'hoarding' accounts, but it would hopefully deter them. What with yesterdays and todays activity, the front page of Conspiracy has only got about 8 threads that aren't deleted spam.

Looks like an alligator's bitten half the arse off it.

I hope it's okay, I've been infracting them with infractions of as high level as possible, just to get rid of them. but if they're going to keep coming back..

This has severely eaten into my porn/nap time before work.

I was thinking of taking this approach, I'll wait until a SU has something to say about it.

So long as it's not me doing it this should be fine. You made Euda soil himself in anger so lets hope these aren't the brainstrust of HB doing this.

Yeah, the truth does hurt sometimes. :(

Honestly, these people arent even contributing to the forums. They're not wanted here.
So, I'll do what I can to get rid of them.

If it's wrong, I'd love for someone to be around to tell me so, but they're not.

Edit: could Mecha Troll 2.0 be perma banned please?
This poster is allready bragging about the fact that the ban hammer does nothing to him.

Looks like a raid from one of the smaller chans to me. It's not hard to deal with, I've noticed at least five or six different mods handing out infractions so it's cleared up quickly.

Yeah, I'm not even bothering to infract people for this stuff. I'm just deleting threads as they appear.

If you have that attitude, why the hell are you a moderator?

I'm not stressing about this, but these people do have to be squished, or else they'll know what they can get away with, and continue to do.

Seriously, if it doesent bother you one little bit that the forums are getting hurt, then you shouldnt be a mod.

I've got the honour of being a mod of totse, and I'm damn well going to make sure I'm worthy of the title!

Uh, I had to delete 10 threads in TGO and that's quite a lot for that forum...so Jeff can you please add AngryFemme as a fourth mod of replace Neptune with her.

Btw, I probably won't spend that much time on totse, since I'm starting to lose interest and I have other things going on.

Seconded.

Besides Yoyo, almost every thread you make here is about how horrible and tough it is for you being a mod. Then of course everyone has to tell you that being insulted by random teenagers is just part of being a mod on Totse and that you shouldn't stress so much over it.

Seriously, you've been posting here just as long as everyone else, are you just figuring out that kids say mean things?

I perma-banned the accounts that were spamming.
New User Registration is now turned off. I'll turn it back on at some point, but for now it's off.
Spam and multiple accounts are now 10 point infractions, defacing totse is a 15 point infraction.
10 infraction points gets you exiled for 10 days, 15 gets you exiled for 1 month, 20 gets you exiled for 6 months.
Anything else I should do?

There's still a shit load of spam in IFIOTW if any of the mods are reading this. Just thought I'd give a heads up as I'm browsing the forums.

My problems arent with people who say mean shit. My problem is with the people who make up shit like "she's abusing her powers" but aslong as people here arent dumbe enough to listen to crap like that, everything is cool. :)

Make that a Double-YAY :) Seems like those spammers have the time of day to just sit there and re-register as many times as it takes.

An instant ten-day ban for a spam thread seems OTT, especially considering that quite a few mods give out those infractions for threads that just lack content. Making two spam threads certainly shouldn't be worth a six-month ban. Instant bans for fairly common offences takes away any warning that the poster gets; if you're going to keep it like this, could you bring back the yellow-card infractions for all things on the infraction list? The new measures seem quite harsh to me.

And I wish you'd read and comprehend what I've written before atempting to patronize me.

The memebers have been bitching about "mod abuse" ever since the words "mod" and "abuse" were introduced into the English language, I don't understand why you would continue to ask to be modded in forums if such petty-meaningless insults effect you so?

You're always creating threads saying you're having such a terrible and stressful time modding certain forums because the kids say/do mean/stupid things, and we always have to remind you that they are, infact, petty children saying stupid/mean things.

As someone else has already pointed out: Have you ever heard of a anyone being de-modded simply because a gaggle of angry pre-teens asked for it?

No, you haven't.

It so, I'd have been gone long ago :D

And I agree with Mr Happy on the new 10 point spam infraction. There are things I delete as spam that I wouldn't want to give the new infraction to since it didn't warrant a ban. I think that the spam attacks can be covered by the defacing Totse infraction.

Someone who likes to make one or two word posts [i.e.: Blow me, fuck Meta, etc...] should get a couple of points infraction [if they don't heed warnings to cease], but certainly not a 10 day ban.

Cry a river then build a bridge and get over it ;)

Don't you consider that we know this and we won't be giving them out as much as we would have before? Well for 'regular' posters anyhow.

I mean when I_like_pie thought it was fun to spam GP under the old zoklet ban system days, I told him not to twice then the third strike had him fucked off. He came crawling to me and I got him unbanned.

I like these new points, don't think I'm a hardass if things were fine no one would get them and I don't feel one bit sorry for disciplining someone that had it coming.

I rarely infract people if they make a 'spam' thread not really comprehending that what they're doing is wrong. It seems kind of cruel.
I dont even infract people who make two similar threads, ie "the biggest sandwich you've ever had?" and "the smallest sandwich you've ever had?" Allthough the poster was probably trying to spam or be a dick. I merged the threads and it had the desired effect.

I find that's the best way to moderate. From a distance, if you will. You've still got to post and visit every day, but you don't have to close 20 threads to prove to the trolls that you're in charge. It's very easy to achieve the same ends with no struggle. Because the old saying is true: You can't fight fire with fire.

No matter.

A few months ago I would have disagreed. I thought that SG could be beaten into submission as it were. But I soon enough learned that such a thing is a Sisyphean task and it just ain't worth the hassle.

I thought that starting little back fires helped if you were trying to fight a fire and stop it from preventing the main fire getting to your little wooden home on the prairie.

Oh laura ingals wilder, where are you when I need you?

But yeah. Generally it's better to be nice to people if possible than act like an ass. I'm concerned because the guy emailed me asking to merge them and is on forum acting all pissy about me merging them.

I smell a set up. Mad
