High paying jobs
I'm not sure the people here can help a whole lot, this forum seems to be pretty much dead with the exception of treasuretrooper and the like.
I need to start making some serious money fast. And I don't really want to spend the time or money to get a 4 year college degree. So i'm thinking more of the lines of specialized technical training. You know, the ones that are always on commercials during daytime television. They have everything from massage therapy to computer tech to lobotomy technicians. The classes are fairly affordable, and the training is only a year or two.
So my question is, does anyone have any knowledge of which of these kind of programs have the most income potential? Difficulty isnt a factor, I'm confident that I can accomplish whatever I take on.

Re: High paying jobs
How much is a lot? Usually the ones on tv are talking like 30-40k. The only thing that comes to mind right now is welding and trucking, who each claim you can be on your way to making money in just a few weeks!!
Off the top of my mind though, it sounds like the tech jobs would pay the most.
Orrrr, switch to nighttime tv and learn the secrets of ebay! : )

Re: High paying jobs
If you can master the art of Trucking and know a few tricks... then $80,000/year is not hard to make. If you want something more domesticated, look into medical coding. You'll be done in 11 months and make 40K after passing your comprehensive exam. Accelerated courses are available in certain areas. Or you could also sign up for the NavySEALs and get a $40,000 sign-up bonus. Check my profile for more info.

Re: High paying jobs
If you have a quick trip around you asst managers start out at 45k before benefits. Otherwise going to a tech school isnt bad. Getting to be a certified welder is pretty short, but if you want a 2 year degree Machining, Electricity, and such are good.

Thank you for taking the time to give a legitimate response. I looked up these careers on the governments bsl site, and medical coding averages 20k a year.
The military is out of the question. I tried to join the marines when I graduated high school, and they rejected me on some obscure bullshit medical condition. I've since been rejected from most of the other branches as well on the same grounds.
I think 80k is a little high for truckers, (The average was a lot lower) But I'm sure there if you specialize in something a little more difficult, it wouldn't be that hard. I don't think i'm willing to spend weeks at a time away from home though.
As it is, i'm making about 30k a year, 25k in commision(taxable) and then 5k in cash, bartending. And thats with a decent amount of time off. (Usually a complete month or two off during the summer)
So if i'm going to invest the time and the money to get training, It's gotta be at least 40-50K annually. You're probably right, scooby. I havent had time to check what they make yet, but it sounds about right. Skilled labor do pretty well.

Re: High paying jobs
That's fine if the military is out of the question. It wasn't my top suggestion either. Also, the BLS data is extensively averaged. I said 40K, because my aunt lost her job last year. She completed a Medical Coding/Billing course within 8 months and started working for a reputed hospital at $35,000/yr. Then when she passed her exam, she got a raise and now she makes $40K. Maybe this is an isolated case... still it is easy to become a coder... and worth a try.
Truckers do indeed make anywhere from $55-80K/yr. If you opt to drive a "tanker-trailer", $22/hour is not uncommon. In the long run if you seriously want to make awesome money... try going to college for 4 years, and then apply as an air-traffic controller. Any 4-year degree will do, and if you pass the FAA certification...$120,000 is very attainable after a few years.

Re: High paying jobs
Go start your own landscaping company. Not just lawns. Do landscape construction, design, everything. My buddy started one and didnt make much the first 8-10 months but soon after that he bought a 12 grand lawnmower, an apartment, an 68 grand pickup truck, a brand new f350, and a bunch of otehr crazy shitt.
