Re: Best home defense guns?
You're going to be hard put to top a 12ga shotgun loaded with 00 or 000 buckshot for home defense. Mossberg or Remington have several inexpensive, reliable, and effective models to choose from.
As far as rifles and handguns.
Most rifles aren't suited to that type of situation, and over penetration can be a problem unless you spend some time getting to know you ammunition. AR15 style rifles come to mind. I guess something like an AK would work fine too. You could also look into firearms like the M1 carbine or carbines chambered in a pistol caliber.
For handguns I would with something you are comfortable with and can shoot, preferably in .357 .38 spec .40 or .45
pretty good stuff on defensive handgun ammo ( a little dated)

another site with decent information relating to this issue

There is a a lot of info out there. You have to find out what works for you.

Re: Best home defense guns?
The most popular option seems to be the shotgun. Generally something along the lines of a Mossberg 500/590 or a Remington 870. A flashlight foregrip is a good idea, too.
There are many who choose rifles for home defense. This is definitely a good idea if you anticipate anything beyond short-range use. Light, high-velocity rifle rounds tend to rapidly lose energy after penetrating objects, and there's a good bit of statistical info to show that they don't present a risk of overpenetration any greater than a handgun round or buckshot. Compact assault-style weapons tend to offer excellent options for customization. Personally, I'd like to build a 16" integrally suppressed AR for this purpose, when funds allow.
Generally speaking, a handgun is the least viable home defense gun, as they've got less stopping power than the average long gun. Then again, a .357 revolver is about as simple as you can get, which might be to your advantage when you're half-naked and barely as conscious.
The key is to have something you've used often. Get comfortable with your weapon choice.

Re: Best home defense guns?
It depends on where you live, and what your house is made of.
A shotgun and a handgun is pretty much it - you might want to add an intermediate rifle like an AR or AK but thats personal preference.
Google some of the names, and do some homework.
Shotguns: Remington, Mossberg, Saiga, Ithica, Winchester.
Handguns: List of them, with links.
The most important thing about firearms, even more important than price, is the fit. Think of it like buying a suit, if you don't have the right fit, it feels all wrong, and you're not going to use it. The same applys to firearms. Do you have any experience shooting at all? You might want to go hit the gun ranges and gun shops and feel the firearms up (so to speak) and maybe shoot a few rounds with them.

Re: Best home defense guns?
Personally if i had the freedom to protect myself legally i would go for a .40S&W or 10mm pistol (Glock) or a decent 12ga shotgun (Win or Rem) with 00 buck. but really you just want something with decent power that will go bang EVERY time you pull the trigger. Accuracy is nothing, reliability is everything.

Re: Best home defense guns?
12 gauge shotgun loaded with 00 buck. Either a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500/590.
(Optional): Quality handgun in one of the following calibers: .38 Special, .357 Magnum, 9x19mm, .40S&W, .45ACP, 10mm Auto. "Quality" means it's made by a major manufacturer, no "Saturday night specials". GLOCK, Sig, Springfield Armory, CZ, Smith and Wesson, Ruger, Taurus, etc., just to name a few.
I'm moving into an apartment in a couple of months and space will be limited so I am retiring my Mossberg 590A1 for home defense use and replacing it with 2 handguns; a Ruger GP100 and a Springfield Armory 1911. The rest of my guns will be stored off-site.

Re: Best home defense guns?
ok, so i have come to my conclusion, i am prolly going to get:
one mossberg 500 12ga with pistol grip (dont say pistol style sucks for accuracy, this is for indoors within like 5-25ft so.....)
then i will probably get 1 .45ACP handgun for my secondary
i think that will be more than enough for home defense, i dont need to go crazy and get a semi auto rifle that costs $1500 with all attatchments and grendade launchers on it.
BTW: for the shotgun, is it better to have a flashlight on it or no? cuz it can give up your location, but dont some have like a pressure button you can put on the grip so when you apply pressure itll turn on, if so, then ill deff get a light attachment
so then, i can have the flashlight off, then when i hear/semi see him, light him up with the flashlight then blast if necessary
oh, whats a good .45 handgun that is reliable, i herd the colt 1911 or W/E always jams and isnt too trusty so screw that gun

Re: Best home defense guns?
I'd say get a shotgun with a stock. Shotguns aren't magic wands that can be generally waved in the bad guys area. You do need to aim, and having a stock greatly helps.
Mossberg has a budget model for US$200.
Yes its good to have a flashlight on your shotgun so you can identify what you're shooting; RULE IV: BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET.
Why do you want a .45?
And for fucks sake make an effort with your typing.

Good plan, just make sure you're comfortable with whatever you choose.

Yes and no. A weapon light serves as a means to temporarily blind someone as well as providing light for the operator to use. You don't need one, but if you think you might want one there is no need to stop short of your goal. Just make sure it doesn't get in the way of efficiently operating the weapon.

Keep it clean, I've never had any sort of malfunction. You also have to keep in mind that any firearm is only as reliable as the magazines and ammo you give it.
I would have to say that a Colt 70 series would be my choice if I could only pick one handgun.

Re: Best home defense guns?
A good 1911 is probably more than you want to spend. An XD, secondhand Glock, or a Taurus revolver would probably serve you well enough for your purposes, and cost less than 450 or so.
Who told you a 1911 is a jammomatic? Unless you're talking about a target gun with virgin-tight chambers and tolerances, I've never had a problem with them, and I shoot several quite often.
