I really agree on this, I think AngryFemme would make a great mod.

We had a similar problem a few years ago with people posting emails from the administration email list. Moderators should be able to post in M&A (or the email list when it existed) without fear of their words escaping to the rest of the forum. That's why the forum isn't viewable for regular users in the first place. The people responsible for posting the emails from the admin list were demodded when that happened, but they were also doing it with malicious intent after being warned not to. I'd at least like to hear the reasoning behind it.

EDIT: The email list seemed a little different to me because it was actual content, this is just thread titles. Although if MLoR and Zok both say it's very much verboten to post that screenshot, I'm pretty damn sure I'm wrong :p

I think it is more the principle of the thing rather than the actual content; like Zok said, staff should be able to know that anything they post in here (title or no) will remain just between the staff. Giving out a screen shot to members for absolutely no reason represents a betrayal of trust, IMO.

That's not to mention the fact that Neptune must have known that a wave of spam would result from this (which it did).

Ofcourse, I absolutly agree that it was a very bad call of the mod in question, mods are supposed to be able to take good calls. But then again...bad calls by mods have been made more then once

I don't think that that is the same thing - and I see nothing really wrong with posting the infraction vid.

Nor do I think that NC should be demodded until his side gets heard. I don't really think any damage has been done by that particular screen shot. It only shows what threads were there, not anything any of us had said. I do think it was a bad judgment call to do though.

And, just for the record, I did not infract the user for posting the screen shot the first time. I gave him infractions for reposting it, which I would do for anyone who reposts a thread that has been locked or deleted.

I think you are underestimating the intelligence of the memers of totse. I think they understand that there are things we as moderators have to discuss in private. You can't beat the spammers in SG. You just wait until they burn themselves out. And leaving one up helps them burn out faster. Our reaction is important. We come down on every thread they'll step it up because they know it pisses us off. We leave one up in IFIOTW and the rest outside of SG and maybe HB can be treated as spam and deleted. SG and HB will probably cycle through it in a couple of days and that'll be that.

In early August of '05, some member started posting threads in SG and BLTC that panthrax was the source of the mod mail list leaks. The posts linked to another forum (started by ex-Totse mods, if I remember correctly) that showed panthrax "confessing" that he was the source of the links. He got demodded, but alls well that ends well, it was a fraud and he was remodded shortly after. :)

That just spurs them on. If you leave it (even better, post in the thread and lock it without removing the link, actually saying that you don't care if people post it but to please do it somewhere relevant), it shows them that it's not a problem and not something we care overmuch about. Everybody already has the screenshots anyway, and it's not like they give away personal information, so why make a fuss over it now?

This was just a bad move on Neptune's part. Aside from the principle of it, nothing bad can come from that screenshot.

I've seen this coming for a while, HB has been asking for screenshots of the mod forum for months. I just tell them that I don't know how to take a screenshot, which is mostly true; I can never remember how to manage it.

This is a breach of trust, but not an issue in and of itself. I don't have anything to say on it, since I wasn't about.

There is nothing particularly "sensitive" on the moderators forum, and when I first set it up I considered making it readable by anyone and everyone, but only writeable by mods and admins.

The only reason I didn't do that was that there are times, specifically when people are trying to break the board, when it's handy to be able to talk about what's happening without letting the people who are doing the breaking know that we know what is going on.

The two main problems with having a private moderator forum is that people will wildly speculate that all sorts of evil is being cooked up here, when it fact most of the discussions are pretty benign, and the fact that ANY on-line forum isn't really private, as you can see by this example. As a friend of mine is fond of saying, "Don't post anything on-line that you wouldn't want to have read aloud in a court of law." It's good advice.

That said, this forum is supposed to be private, and if someone feels they need to "expose" its inner workings to the rest of the world, I don't can't think of any reason why they'd continue to be a moderator.

And then after all of this, you get to your 'job', and take it EASY, leaving the big moderating decisions to the more experienced mods?

When I was made Mod, I got no email telling me I was Mod, I found out because there was a thread in BLTC congratulating me and I had no idea why.

Nor was I given any kind of advice or anything about Modding. I was just thrown in and kinda left to learn for myself. And a week or so after I became Mod, the other Mod[s] quit and I was left as the only Mod of one of the busiest forums. But I learned quick enough.

I do think, however, that any new Mod should be sent a copy of Wintermute's guide to moderating as it pretty much tells all you need to know.

Meta that is because you are an intelligent person with commo sense. You were probably modded because JC,, or someone else spoke with you, or read your posts and could TELL by these posts that you were a good guy and the ideal person to be given moderator access.

2001 or 2002, and you either got modded that way (Thats how I got modded too Meta... in fact I was on vacation and I didnt find out til I got back! :P), or you were carefully selected by existing mods, and then AFTER an admin okayed it and thought about it (or at least they seemed to think about it), you were modded.
