Default Performance Laptops

I have a lot of money to blow on a laptop.. around 2.5k.. and I was wondering if there are any other sites like ibuypower.com
I want something like that, not some sony or dell where I'm paying for a name. If anyone knows any other websites like that I'd appreciate it if you'd post them. Thanks

Buy a name. You'll regret it when it comes to support. All the so-called "high end custom" laptops I've seen have horrible build quality for their price.

What will you be using it for primarily? Games? CAD?

Ok.. don't mind if I take what you say as a grain of salt. I have an ibuypower desktop and I have no complaints whatsoever about it. As a matter of fact, i had a spyware problem and my windows got fucked, but alas, no CD to reinstall.. so I called them up and they sent me out a new disk, new key, no questions asked. So please, just because you went out and bought a vaio or a dell and saw my post and got offended cause you wasted 500-600 dollars to pay for the name, don't think you have to push your false beliefs on to me.

I'm not pushing my beliefs on anyone. All I was saying is that my personal experience with "custom" laptops was bad - other peoples may differ. I know someone who bought a rather expensive custom laptop and I honestly don't know how they pass it off as quality. Ibuypower may be better.

Beliefs cannot be false - they are the opinion someone holds.

I have a Dell laptop and I'm not in the least offended - I bought it second hand for £150 in the knowledge that at that price point, no custom machine, new or used, could even come near it. I don't have big money to spend so I wanted widely available cheap second hand parts for it if I break it. I'm just saying with a custom, you can't hit ebay and grab a new keyboard for less than the price of a DVD if you spill coffee on it. If money isn't such a problem for you, then I see your point of view.

Again, what will you be using it for?

You obviously know more than us on this one, smartass. And you're coming here asking us for advice?

Damn fucking straight. If you're gonna be so fucking obnoxious, you can make some choices on your own.

But since you've made a topic, I'll give you a hand, since I'd feel bad not posting.

First off, why do you want a performance laptop? So it can get incredibly hot, and burn out? Eh, up to you again.

Second of all, custom laptops have all kinds of problems. Patchy support, ridiculously overpriced (same with any designated "gaming" machine), poor quality and usually major heat issues. Why you'd want one is beyond me.

Thanks for backing me up. I always thought the same thing - unobtainable parts once the company discontinues support for that model is the worst part of it. Their products aren't usually tested to the higher standard of major big-name manfacturers so you're bound to find problems.

Get a big name and you'll be much, much better off in terms of support, parts and reliability.

Well I'm someone who actually owns an ibuybullshit laptop, so perhaps I'll educate you on a few things about their laptops and laptops in general. Maybe then, from now on, you'll take a grain of salt with everything that originates from within your crack-smoking mind.

First off, read this, about ODM's and OEM's. It basically says that many the brand-name companies (ibuypower, cyberpower, dell, alienwaste, etc) that sell laptops (or resell) to the end user, actually buy bare-bone laptop kits from other companies you've never heard of (Uniwill, Sager, Clevo, etc), called an ODM, aka Original Design Manufacturer. This basically means that the build quality of your laptop doesn't not depend so much on whether you bought it from Dell or ibuypower, or cyberpower, or another OEM, but rather the build quality of the product line from whichever ODM your OEM decided to purchase. Often times, you'll find that several different OEM, purchased the same bare bones from the same ODM.

Another thing you need to know, is that build and design quality in desktop enclosures is not nearly as important as build and design quality in laptop enclosures. ibuypower can use the shittiest case for their laptops, and the most it will do is give you a hard time if you decide to open it and upgrade. However, in a laptop, MANY things can go wrong, due to poor heat management caused by a poor design.
For instance, the laptop I bought from IBP a couple years ago. The ODM who makes it is a company called Uniwill. It worked fine for about 4 months, and then whenever it got hot from playing games, my USB ports would fail, thus causing my USB mouse to fail. Infact, if I were to give you the model number, you could google it and see that many other people with the same system had the same exact problem. Guess why? It's a design flaw by the ODM. The only way to fix it is to use a PCMCIA USB card. IBP would not do anything about it.

My advice to you is to try to find the ODM of whatever system you look at. Read up on any problems that people have with that system. Then look to see if there are other OEM's that sale the same thing for less money. Don't avoid a Dell or Sony just because it's a Dell or Sony; in fact, if you look on dell.com/outlet, you might find a good deal on a good laptop.

Well what would you suggest in terms of a good gaming laptop for around 2-2.5k?
