I read somewhere that some girls feel cornered when you ask for their numbers and perfer it when you give them yours; this is also supossed to make it not look like all you want is sex.

Any truth to this?

It depends how you go about it, it could come across as confidence, or being egotistical. Just make sure that the feeling is mutual.
