Default coming into some money, advice?

So my mom just passed away and my father passed when I was 8 (19 now) and I'm about to go off to college. I'm getting a check in the mail for around $25000 and I'm trying to think of some things to get with it. I'm planning on saving some of it but definitely not all. The house we were living in got paid off due to mortgage insurance so I don't have to worry about paying that off (however when I go off to college in January I will be selling it for some college $$$). I don't need any money to pay for college on account of my grandpa's inheritance and it will more than pay for all of my college expenses (dorms, books, food, ect). Now.. my question to you is.. What can I buy to entertain myself. My friends come over a good bit but most of them have jobs so I'm usually left with 4-5 hours a day of boredom. I'm already planning on buying a stacked laptop for around 2-2.5 grand and I'm buying some stuff for my car, but otherwise I'm looking to spend about 5 grand to just buy random shit to help out with my downtimes. Drugs and such are kinda out of the question because I'm about to get a job as a pharmacy tech and drug test will be putting that out of the question. So.. yeah.. what to get?

Buy the laptop like you said, and get a sweet sound system. Other than that all I'd suggest is drugs besides some wheels if you already don't have a car.

Drug tests aren't impossible to fake.

buy a desktop computer too, and a million games. and rent/buy a gameserver so you can be an admin and entertain all those other people on the internet, and start your own clan

or write me a check and I'll entertain you ;p

or, invest it, that's really the smart thing todo

Wow. Just wow.

You are truly a child of fortune. Sucks about your parents, but lets see...you've got your college covered in full, you've got 25,000 in cash, and you've got a house completely paid off in your name. Do you have any idea what a lucky bastard you are?

You could retire 5 years out of college if you really took care of your shit, but instead you're going to buy things like laptops and car stereos which are going to depreciate the minute you take them home. And seriously? 2.5k for a laptop? The ones for 600-1000 are more then enough for anyone but NASA engineers.

The sad part is, I can see you being working class again by the time you graduate college.

sorry bout your mom dude

but anyways, if you dont need to pay for school cuz ur grandpas thingy why sell the house for extra money?
it is a house right? theres no reason to sell that especially if the value of the property is going to increase significantly.

do you have a job?

the last thing you want to do is run out of money
put a good ammout of that money aside and put it in some sort of investmet before you start spending it

Well considering I'm majoring in pharmacy and should have no problems getting into med school, I doubt that will be the case. I do very well in school and pharmacist make about 80k out of college plus a signing bonus.

I don't want to keep this house because I'm leaving this area and I don't plan to ever return. The money from my grandpa will do alot more than pay for college. It's alot, but I don't wish to disclose the amount because everyone would just say I'm a liar or something, so I'll just leave it at that.

Just be smart about it. If you really have that much money, put half of it or so away for retirement. The rest you can blow on drugs booze and hookers.
