Where to go for dinner - First 'Date'
Okay very borderline S&A but considering this is dinner it's here. Don't move it
Anyhow I want this to go well obviously and I've got the options planned and I want you to decide what to potentially go for.
Keep in mind she's ultimately got the choice but I'd still like the options weighed.
I'm in a smaller town so theres not too much to offer, and the nearest 'city' would be an hours drive away...two people just getting to know one another going on a hours drive together seems creepy to me from a girls perspective as well as me doubting I could keep the same talk up for the trip to and from as well as the dinner.
Anyhow options are...
with my comments
a) Woodfired pizza
(good place, nice eats, clean environment)
b) Local 'grill'
(I'm not 'well cultured' all I'd have would be a steak or something simple)
c) Chinese Food Eat In
(Again there's only a few items I'd go for)
d) Some sort of meal I prepare at home or takeaway food/pizza at my place
(Most likely as a 'group date' where it's not us two alone but we are still together - working to not have her think she's going to be taken and locked up in my dungeon )
And a late entry to the idea bank
e) Grabbing something simple like fish and chips earlier on, grabbing a nice place to sit and have it whilst watching a sunset or something?? Kinda lame but I could go with that.
Oh and alcohol can be consumed at all of these places so any alcohol ideas? I heard champagne with strawbeey cordial is nice??? maybe I dreamt that...especially considering you can't buy strawberry cordial here. Strawberry ice cream topping/syrup?
Anyhow I also don't want to go overboard yet want it to be memorable at the same time.

First of all, she does not have the choice. Only if she hates the type of food you picked out, do you then allow her a say where you are going. You are taking the initiative by asking her out, and it will make a good impression to have something planned. Not, "Do you want to go here?". You say, "We're headed to a quaint Italian place I know." Low and behold, its mother fucking pizza!
I would pick pizza, its cheap, its casual, and allows you to see how she eats her food. Giving you insider information on the type of person she is.
Now, the watching the sunset idea was also lame. This isn't a movie, at least not until you've been with her for a while. This needs to be short, and sweet. Why you ask? So you can go on another date.
All these "dates" are just ways for you to get comfortable enough with the girl, and her you, so you can eventually sleep together. That is one of the short-term goals correct? (I hope so, because I still think you're a faggot. Not sure why I am giving you pearls here, but take them bitch!)
Anyways, any more questions just come back here.
*Side note: Sambob loves teh cock.

Asking about food is not S&A and I consider the atmosphere and everything to be that also.
And as for CarbonB I really do appreciate the advice but she does have the choice. I don't need it planned, I'm not some strategical chess player. She can say fuck all those places my friends are having a BBQ and you're my date for that.
Why plan when everything that has happened with us so far wasn't and has worked? If it's to know I can manage things well she knows - We both do uni, and work and still have time for other things so I don't consider that important.
Also she's the girl that I feel I knew we'd end up together in the end anyhow not just some short time thing. Not that anyone really needs to know that - I asked about food. And CarbonB was spot on about telling something about a person about how they eat, not that I'll be paying attention I think watching anyone eat is rude.
The sunset thing was because it's a beautiful time of year for it and there just so happens to be facilities provided at the place you can get a nice eyeful of the sun doing its thing.

BOOKSHOP!!!
go to a bookshop, they have the best possible atmosphere.
They're all 'british romantic comedy hugh grant'-ie
And dont do a dinner, if it goes to hell then youre stuck there awkwardly making small talk for an hour.
Do something that doesnt put all the focus on each other.
Like bowling or dancing.

No bookshop And wouldn't you have to shut the fuck up and been quiet in those just as in a library :/
Thing is there needs to be a date, something formal seeing as we've already done most of the 'unfocused' stuff already
This was in OI for a reason, that being I want to know about how to 'wine and dine' her not what i need to do in other aspects.

Re: Where to go for dinner - First 'Date'
considering it's bloody freezing in canberra, go somewhere with heating, not fish and chips outdoors.
i reckon pizza as well, it's casual and it means you can see what she orders etc to see if you're compatible. pizza match making always works. ie she chooses vegetarian, you choose meat lovers: it's doomed.
for god's sake don't watch her eat. girls are weird about eating in front of potential boyfriends early on. i know i am. i hate being watched while i'm eating in general, it makes me very self conscious.

Re: Where to go for dinner - First 'Date'
Ok, after reading the responses here I just gotta ask 2 questions.......
1) What exactly can you "tell about a person by how they eat"? This sounds like one of these fabricated theories similar to the nonsense of...."you can see how a man treats a woman by the way he treats his mother". It may make for a fun game talking in HYPOTHETICAL scenarios.....but if you believe there is 100% accuracy in your little psychological observances in mundane mannerisms, then I got some swampland for ya.
2) How in the hell are you supposed to sit across from someone and engage in conversation and NOT watch them eat. HUH??????????????
I vote for the steakhouse based on the choices you posted, only because it has a wider variety of selections than the others.....which is more appropriate not knowing her tastes in food yet.

1) All sorts of things I imagine. Her manners, what sort of food/s she likes, self consciousness (does she care what she puts in her body?...no pun intended), is she a big drinker (already know the answer to this but for anyone else)
2) There is a difference between staring and occasionally catching a glimpse of her eating that can't be helped. I'm the same I can't stand people watching me when I eat.
Why ask me anyhow CarbonB is the one that was so strong on these things. I just agreed thinking you would be able to pick up on things about a person.

Does how a person eat tell you the sort of person they are?
That makes me slightly paranoid.
If it's Chinese, it's bowl to mouth. If it's steak, it's eat with fingers. If it's sushi it's oh-fuck-this-I'm-going-to-McDonalds.
I'd have kept this in OI. I see no problem with slightly off topic threads, considering this one is still about the food more than the girl.
Well, perhaps one of the S&A mods might move it back later on if they read this.
Take her to a steakhouse. Even if she's one of those girls that eats a lettuice leaf and then pretends she's 'soooo full up!'. They do good salads at most steakhouses, or atleast the ones in this country do. And grilled chicken.
Nyam nyam grilled chicken.
I'm assuming the steak house uses a chargrill for the cooking.
Nothing better than a cold beer and a steak on a date, if it's an eating date, that is. Aslong as the place provides bibs.
Was it specifically a food date you wanted to take her on?
It's deffinately a good place to have conversation that wont be random and uncomfortable, but I suggest the next date after this one you take her snowboarding. OR, take her paintballing, then take her to an icecream parlour by the ocean.

I wasn't asking you in particular, just the folks that put that theory up. But in response to YOUR interpretation.....
1) Yes you can tell what kind of food she likes (or at least in the mood for THAT hour) but everything else is just YOUR interpretation. She could be the biggest lush on the planet and NOT drink, if for no other reason as to hide it from you or maybe she has to get up early for an appointment tomorrow. And table mannerisms has NO indication in the least in regard to overall character. I've been with chicks that had Miss Manners perfection that could have dined with the Queen of England.....yet in every other aspect of their lives were nothing but a psycho trollup. And vice versa girls eating like they were a pig in its sty, were quality catches in every sense of the word. Hell, look how "proper" Hannibal Lecter was at the dinner table! LOL
The ONLY conclusion I would make after watching a chick eat would be this. IF she wanted anchovies on her pizza and ate them with complete abandon, then it would be pretty safe to conclude she won't argue in the future about taking your manspunk in her face/mouth for "taste" issues.
2) And if you are just taking "occasional glimpses" while having dinner, she may walk away believing you lack confidence or appear shifty. Or maybe just a perve because you couldn't take your eyes off her chest all night. Or a player because you kept eyeing up the waitress or other hottie in the booth next to yours. See, this is the problem coming up with generalities and applying them to everyone. Everyone's perception/interpration of said behaviors can be different, which means the "results" of any generalization is strictly biased in that interpretation.

Yes.
Ummm I can't snowboard and I hate the fucking cold and snow I think she's the same but she would make for a ot snow bunny. Paintball....I dunnnno lol
And we are about 4 hours away from a beach. It's a chilly time of year (for us...I'm a 40 degree celsius + kinda guy) so hibernation-like activities are nice. Curling up watching movies, playing games all that nice warm and fuzzy stuff. I'd take her to the beach when it warms up if we're still good.

(I'll delete this off topic bit when you've read this)
EDIT:
Trousersnake, you said that it's fecking cold where you are. I dont know quite where you are but how would a pub crawl be? Or a bar crawl rather?
In the winter there's nothing nicer than hot spicy liquors and coffee and conversation in a quiet bar.
I saw this anime the other day where the bartender was talking about a drink called 'angels kiss'. It sounds delicious and awesome.

What an amazing invention!
The place I currently work at used to serve the steaks with their own special little steak knives, but customers kept on stealing them and stabbing each other. Not so great when there's some knife amnesty thing going on.

I am directly replying to yoyobek, because I know she needs the love and attention. Yes, you can tell lots about a person from the way they present themselves, the way they dress, the way they talk, the way they eat. Everything, no matter how small it might seem to you, to a trained eye is valuable information.
To say that you eat steak with your fingers, yikes. Chinese food bowl to mouth? Yikes. We aren't in Japan or China here, and unless you are eating soup and noodles, not quite sure why you would even need the bowl to your face.
Also to napoleon: I know that you hate me because I am taller. Not only in stature but in...*wink* you get the picture. So stop hating, it really is getting tedious replying to your remarks.
Now to Trouser: I didn't know all the background information about this girl. I simply assumed that it was a girl you had met and were taking out for the first time. Was that a safe assumption? If it was, then take the advice. Before you have said that you have trouble keeping girls, the reason is because your backbone isn't stiff enough. Stiffen up, and you'll get an answer to how long you can maintain at full attention.

Uhhh I know her but haven't done anything formal together yet just when we bump into one another which isn't too uncommon living in a smaller area.
Stiffen up? I don't quiet get what you mean. Does that mean get more serious or something? Usually I'm being told to lighten up :/ And that's what's gotten my head straight and resultingly...her it seems

I love feeding the ducks.
Or rather, when I go to feed the ducks at the lake in this big park thing, they all ignore me having grown very bored of all these idiots throwing bread at them. But the pigeons seem to enjoy it.
What sort of girl is she? Is she kind of classy, a bimbo, mall rat? Skater, goth? What ?
Because what one girl might love, another will despise, and vice versa.
It depends how much you're doing this for her, and how much you're doing it for you.

Shit I don't know this WAS supposed to be just about food not the peepshow that is what my life has become here.
She is a smart down to Earth girl who isn't afraid to speak her mind and doesn't allow herself to get into vulnerable situations? Someone that isn't willing to go for just anyone either. She likes music (don't they all?) and she does uni and works. She's not a skater not a bimbo, maybe a little emo as in she doesn't want to be hurt (who does?) and I dunno I'd imagine she likes to shop She best do cause I don't mind it.
Likes to be around friends and likes to have a drink.
Actually I remember saying she likes to cook...maybe I'll make her wait hand and foot on me haha I don't think she'd go for that but it would be good cause what she can cook good is most likely what she likes to eat too.

Good idea. Why did you write 'date' like that?

bro, just let her pick and be cool with the decision. if you get a place set in your head you might try to sway her decision, and seem controlling. just a thought...

Re: Where to go for dinner - First 'Date'
Try this mate...
Quieter, more intimate place first so you guys can do that talking and getting to know each other thing.
I'd go for the pizza thing...Everyone likes pizza.
Do not do the chinky...Women tend to feel funny about making funny sounds while they eat...And getting sauce on themselves, which is what happens with chow mein!
The steak house could work too.
Wait for the second or third date to invite her over for a nice cooked meal...Women like it when you cook for them.
Hope that helps.

Re: Where to go for dinner - First 'Date'
yoyo we usually do a pub/bar crawl as it is :D
Uhhh I know her but haven't done anything formal together yet just when we bump into one another which isn't too uncommon living in a smaller area.
Stiffen up? I don't quiet get what you mean. Does that mean get more serious or something? Usually I'm being told to lighten up :/ And that's what's gotten my head straight and resultingly...her it seems
When I said stiffen up, I mean don't sway your plans so much for other people, just because they ask. Unless of course it is for someone you want to get to know better.
Which is why if you are taking out a girl, you are not rude about telling her where yall are going, but you can still be firm about your decision. Lightening up is a great idea, your goal should always to be to have fun.
If things go good with the girl, great, that is just a bonus, but first and foremost have fun with the situation, loosen up, but make sure that you aren't catering to the girl non-stop, she will see this as a weakness that she can take advantage of.

It means grow some balls.
It's the difference between these two:
"I know a great italian place, you're welcome to join me for some pizza.'
And:
"So yeah we could go on a.. um.. a date if you wanna. I don't mind where."

Yeah that sounds good. I was going to rep you but apprantly I've given too much in the past 24 hours.
Someone said go for coffee or something first. I'll probably do that first then step it up with the dinner another time.

Re: Where to go for dinner - First 'Date'
I love feeding the ducks. :)
What ?

It depends how much you're doing this for her, and how much you're doing it for you.
I disagree, no matter the type of woman or girl you are dating she will always respond to confidence, humor, compassion, politeness, and big dicks.

I think I get slightly Americanized by being on totse. But yes, I'm a big fan of the "We'll feed the ducks, you bring the bread."

Re: Where to go for dinner - First 'Date'
Are you actually in Canberra or just a town near it? If you're in Canberra proper, Pizza can be found at "La Capana" in Kingston. There's also a little Vietnamese place at the Griffith shops that looks el cheapo but has amazing food. I forget what it's called (there's also a chinese place there that's average. Aubergine, also at the Griffith shops, is superb but costs a lot. There's also that place in Woden that does wood fired pizza "Australian Pizza Kitchen" or something. It has homemade alcoholic ginger beer by the pint :D
I'm trying to think of places in the city/north side but it's been a while since I've lived there.
EDIT: Ah, just noticed that you answered my question in your post.
