Default good virus scanners

well my dad installed Norton 360 on this computer, and its really annoying because it lags it and its not possible to turn it off unless i uninstall it. i might do that, but what are the best free virus scanners out there?

i have AVG for viruses and ad-aware for spyware/adware, so is there anything better?

thanks.

I like using trendmicros online scan. It works, it's up to date, and best of all, you only scan for viruses when you want to. I hate how AVG always starts up with windows. For spyware, I use ad-aware by lavasoft. And I use a firewall program too so I have some control over my network connections (it's stopped and alerted me to spyware a few times).

Avoid Norton like the plague. It hogs resources and in my experience it's a general pain in the ass.

I use AVG because it's light on RAM/CPU - and it's free. It's caught and removed every single virus I've had.

I've heard good things from a lot of people about NOD32 though.

Real, I like having AVG running in the background because it scans files in realtime - if I download a virus, it'll tell me without waiting for a scan.

thanks guys. but yeah i told my dad it isn't worth getting Norton because there are anti-virus programs that are better then it, but he told me he was gonna download it because it makes him feel safer about not getting a virus. i would uninstall it but he would flip out so i guess i'm just gonna deal with it. plus the people who work for customer service are stupid.

but yeah i've used the trendmicro scan but it always says theres 2 hours left even when i've been scanning all night. i should try it again.

ok guys i have problem but i don't see the point in making a new thread about it.

my soulseek's been fucked up today. half the time no results will come up in my searches, even for really obvious stuff like radiohead and pink floyd. sometimes it'll give me a runtime error and shut down. i know Norton fucked it up but i don't know how. i've tried redownloading it without uninstalling, tampering with Norton so it's firewall doesn't block soulseek and restating the computer. nothing will work, and if it does work it'll just fuck up again. does anyone know whats the problem and how i can fix it? i would really appreciate if someone could help me.
