Default Jeff, a female supermod?

Root, if the software allows a fourth super mod, how about appointing a girl?

*waits while his fellow mods pass out from the shock of jack 'Proud To Be A Chauvinist Piglet' ketch suggesting such a thing.*

No I don't suppose we need a fourth supermod, and I'm in no way implying the present ones don't do a damn good job.

But in the interests of balance and fairness it would be kinda nice to have some split-tail influence at the top of the tree IMO.

Maybe its just the forum I mod but I have noticed a steady rise in real live girls on totse. Back in 03 I could probably have named about 5...

I'd suggest kAtE

*through just ever so slighty gritted teeth*

Supermods/fellow mods what do you think?

Now excuse me please, I need to go lie down in a darkened room..

It hurts me to say it, but I kind of agree that *IF* there was need for another SuperMod, KaTe would deffinately be my reccomendation.
With Stormy a close second.

Maybe they could do it together? And supermod together as well. :D

Well, since you asked for opinions, I don't think that another supermod should be added just for the sake of 'equality'. :p I just don't see what difference it would make having a female supermod. Especially if they were only given the position for that reason.

*Shrug*
It confuses me a little when people talk about needing more female moderators, too. If a female is the best person for the position, sure, but I don't like the idea of people being put in charge for any other reason. Luckily, I think all of the current female mods were given their power for a good reason. As far as I know, anyway. :D

I mean, I get where you're coming from and all, I just don't think it really matters what gender our supermods are. :/

I'm going to assume this thread is an elaborate joke about British political correctness, at least I hope that's the case...

Edit: I hope you at least had the common courtesy to talk to Kate before you made this thread, because considering she's described herself as a feminist, I'm not sure she'd appreciate such a thread. I could be wrong though, but that's just my take on it.

No. I've found the sexist approach of Totseans very offensive.
I demand that Jeff hunter from now on be known as Jess hunter.

Really not necessary, IMO. Supermods should only be appointed if needed (and you said yourself we don't need any more), not for the sake of equality or fairness or anything. It's not like the current supermods are sexist or unfair to the female members and mods (any more than they deserve, anyway ;)).

And women in authority? Isn't that a bit progressive for you, jack? :p

Uhm If any of you seriously believe i'm suggesting this out of some kind of mislead sense of PC'ness then I shall be very very worried about my online persona...which also happens to be my IRL one too :(

My every instinct tells me that kAtE shouldn't have to worry her puuurdy lill head 'bout modding or totse at all...women just don't have the thinking tackle for it.

And believe me I'm about as far as you can get from a believer in 'positive discrimination'.

I would say a woman's place is in the kitchen but any man who lets a woman into the kitchen to do anything more than to get him a beer or make him an apres bonk sammich is asking to find his good knives used to open tins with.

However despite my slightly pre-deluvian views on gender demarcation, I do think totse would benefit from a female super mod.

Upsetting kAtE and femnazis in general is one of the few pleasures left to me.

Nothing would please me more than to know that the thought of a dyed-in-the-wool misogynist recommending her for a position on account of her gender had made her throw something at the monitor. :P

Infact I'm kinda assuming that's the reason she hasn't replied here yet.

In fact, I'd assume that kAtE- hasn't posted in here yet because she's gone to sleep. To that, you can toss in the fact that she's waiting to see what people will say about her and the idea in general. I don't see the need, but I'm sure kAtE- is very flattered and wouldn't say no.

Not to be a dick or anything, but do we really need another super mod? I mean it's hard enough to coordinate things between me acidmelt and mlor as it is, I think that would just add to the confusion. But if we were to add anyone else, I would put kate at the top of the list. Either way, that's my two cents. I'll be back from vacation in 2 or 3 days and I'll post more extensively then.

I do NOT agree with this personally. I dont see why we specifically need to have a female ANYTHING. Moderator positions should be selected by merit, experience, knowledge, etc etc, not one whether you have a vagina.

Though prsonally I think we always need to have more than one admin/supermod around, so they can keep each other in check (two or three is a good numer). RIght now it SEEMS like theres only one because Zok is gone. I think if AFTER Zok gets back it still seems like theres a need for one, THEN we should discuss who it is, but I think its a BAD idea to choose someone based on their reproductive organs. If we selected on merit alone, would you recommend Kate? I dont think so, as there are plenty of people with more experience who would probably be better for the job.

Needing a specific female supermod implies that women on totse are somehow not given a fair shake y the male supermods.. (or at least its got to imply SOMETHING like that), and I know Zok and MLOR would not do this.

Just my 2 cents on this.

And hell just talking about experience, I was considered for an admins position before Kate was even a member. Not saying shes inexperienced or a bad mod at all, on the contrary she's been around longer than some, and has had a pretty good track record as far as I know, and she's very enthusiastic about the state of SG, which is totse 'face' after all (sad as that is!!).

But i just think if we're going to talk about another supermod or admin, that its silly to base it on someones gender.

Totse has always been about IDEAS. In totse it doesn't really matter if you're male or female because we have ANONYMITY. The only thing you can REALLY be judged on is your ideas. So I say if we add another one, let it be the most qualified, with the best ideas, who has the most experience, etc etc etc.

ACIDMELT? Is he even active?

Personally I don't even see how Acidmelt is still even a MOD. He's done some very questionable stuff over the years. Don't you all rememer that shit with Jamiroquai? He's given me shit for VERY BAD reasons as well. He is too emotional and angry I think to do the job.

Zok makes an EXCELLENT admin because he's so level headed.

I see Acidmelt as a very bad choice for an admin, and I KNOW I am not the only person who thinks so.

Or wait, does everyone know this, and I'm just the only one who doesn't, and I'm making a fool out of myself

Really...

I'm not really suprised by some of the replies, although toraton - I'm suprised, your the ONE person that really thought I should have been a super-mod/admin a few months back around the change of vbul - maybe you were just being nice by saying that lol :p

I was actually thinking about talking to zok about having another super-mod (regardless of gender) because the site is getting bigger, and the 3 that we have now are all within similar timezones.

Sam - there are only a handful of mods that are longer standing then me.

Well, yes, I'd be interested in seeing Jeffs opinion - not because hes the powerful one, but because I actually have no idea how decent/crap of a mod I am and if hes of the opinion that I'm 'good enough' to 'step up'. I know most other peoples opinions on me :o

Only a handful? Havent you only been a moderator for aout 12-18 months though? I'm not criticising, but it just seems like not even experience to give someone Admin or Super Moderator access.

And even if there are only a handful, consider that since there are SO MANY moderators that have been added since 2005 (when you were added I think,, late in the year maybe?? something like that I'm pretty sure!), then shouldn't it be logical to look for a more experienced moderator?

I just definitely think that we should be choosing by MERIT and not by sex, although since Kate agrees I don't really have a problem with this thread thats for sure. I think it says something about us that is pretty negative if we feel we HAVE to have a female supermod, or a female anything.

You know that I'm mocking the request more than the actual idea of the position.

As it is now, the position is nearly worthless. You have no power over other mods and no ability to lead as a super mod. Super mods can only ban, as far as I'm aware.

I'm not sure why anyone would want it.

To get things done.

As it is right now, it feels like there are users that neend to be banned that aren't getting banned very fast.

Though another admin is what I think we really need. I've seen some really questionable stuff from the MODERATORS recently. And I think we need to have more checks on each other to make sure we're not abusing our mod access, closing things that dont need to be closed, calling each other douchebags for trolling when we're not even trolling and other people obviously ARE but getting away with it without anything being said to them, Infracting people that don't need to be Infracted.

I see a fair amount of overmodartion still, and I think its one of the biggest mistakes moderators can make.

I really don't get the seniority factor. There are probably at least a dozen mods that have been around longer, so that argument doesn't really make sense.

Wouldn't the most logical choice be lifejunkie since, he's, you know, a former admin? This of course is neglecting the fact that there really isn't a need for another supermod/admin.

OF COURSE LJ would be an ideal choice if we needed a new super-duper! No question.

Or cense for that matter

or any other of a select band of long year mods.

That wasn't my point.

Is it so wrong to want to see some cute girly airheadedness at the top?!

(j/k kAtE, 'airheaded' is so not applicable in your case)

To keep the celestial bodies in alignment and the Universe balanced.

Also as a nod towards the growing female population of totse and to inject some more floral-Laura Ashley-pinkyness into the whole thang.

And most of all cos I die a bit everyday that wintermute doesn't post .

In that case, shouldn't there be another twenty or so male supermods to reflect the gender distribution on totse?

It just seems stupid and entirely unnecessary.

Then again, I tend to think this thread has more to do with than just suggesting Kate as supermod...

Kate was the wrong woman to choose then. I doubt she wants to be associated with being the 'pink girly super mod!'
Of course, Kate, correct me if I'm wrong :)

There are two types of women on &totse:

1. Intelligent, funny, witty, smart-ass, 1337 women... (Me, Kate, stormy, etc)

2. HAI I HAVE BEWBS LOL! Do I look hot in this shirt? The OFFICAL what does your lip color say about YOU thread!

....Yea.

The later is the type of woman who would complain about there being no female leadership. They think feminism is about wearing "GIRLZ ROCK!" t-shirts and giving every woman the right to buy whatever product she wants without being oppressed by men. And god damn it, if a yucky boy can be a super mod, A PRETTY GIRL WHO LIKES PINK GLITTERY THINGS CAN TOO!

The former doesn't care whether there is a female super mod or not because they don't NEED a woman in power to know they are just as good, and sometimes better, than the men that post. Asking for a female super mod just to even things out is like voting for Hillary because 'she's a woman.'

I don't know if Kate is qualified or not; that isn't the point. If we needed another super mod, it should go to the person who is the most qualified. Period.

I would hope that I would be choosen for my capablities rather then the fact I'm female, but then I also do agree that totse could do with a female a bit higher up.

Or is it such a terrible idea to everyone that it was ME suggested :p

I would have made the same post not matter what female was nominated.

Girly is ok as long as material girliness doesn't define your life.

Basically, but I can't give up my core belief of 'women being treated as equal' - in fact Jack is probably the only one that'll think thats funny and understand what I mean. Just the way I am and think.

How have I ever been mean to you? I never talk to you! I never have the chance to be mean to you.

Anyhow, what makes you think that none of the current supermods are female? Despite what people tell you and the sometimes gender-specific handles people adopt, I'm never 100% positive of anyone's gender until I meet them f2f, and sometimes not even then. There's a keyboard player in my friend's band who I've known for years and I'm still not sure if she's XY or YY. She represents herself as female, so I use feminine adjectives to describe her, but I really don't know (or care) what genes she was born with.

I'm pretty much 100% sure that the 3 supermods you currently have are all male, I've seen pictures of all 3 and talked to one over voice chat before. I can't speak for JC's gender.

Unless someone is out to fool us!

The only reason I say that I would like to see a female higher up, like I told NC, is my rather dominating feminist views and equal rights for females - which I can't/can ignore, but do accept that totse doesn't work like that!

And as I said, I would much rather my capablities shined much brighter then my gender.

totse does work like that (http://www.totse.com/en/hack/introduction_to_hacking/manifsto.html). I think you're confusing equal rights with quotas.

Quotas have historically been used to right a past wrong, to force an organization that has been biased in the past towards one gender or ethnic group to open up and be more gender/racially balanced and/or representative.

But if there's no past wrong to right, I'm not sure what your justification is for quotas.

Oooooooo, I don't like the word quotas - I've been pushed into 'discussions' over that word before.

I'm not saying there are any wrongs that need to be fixed - just that it would be 'nice' and that a female supermod would work as a representative, of sorts, for the females in the community. It's hard to encourage females to post here; we're generally treated very differently as soon as regulars find out (or work out) that the poster is female. A LOT of good females posters are driven away due to this type of 'harassment'.

And I'm know I'm contradicting myself with my 2 points (capabilities vs. 'quotas').

edit: and please remember, I didn't ask for this thread to be made, I'm reacting to a suggestion put foreward by another mod

I was actually added about a week prior to that post since Wintermute was not online to say whether or not she wanted the job. Once she came back she accepted the position. So we were added at the same time, I believe. Once we were both added, JC made the post.

Adding avocado to a grill cheese sandwich can add a certain something to the mix. They're quite tasty, but still not as good as peanut butter and mozzarella cheese. Especially if you toast the bread and the mozzarella cheese melts a little.

It's just delicious.

You don't think we need another supermod, fine, I agree. But methinks some here do protest over much.

I never said that we didn't need another supermod. I was pointing out that totse doesn't have a history of discrimination when it comes to appointing admins and mods, and somehow you're equating that with misogyny. Perhaps the sulphuric whiff you smell is due to a mis-functioning proboscis? Or HUOA?

If there's someone who would make a good supermod -- someone who can mod any forum without stepping on the toes of the mods that are there and has the time, interest, and inclination to do so -- name them and give your reasons for nominating them.

I've heard people say affirmative action and all.
I disagree with that.

Lets go with actual experience and the fact kate fits a completely different time slot than the current supermods! Also has a more than adequate grasp of how totse works.

Her presence is definately noticed throughout the boards and I think that makes a big difference.

It's as if you mod a forum and don't respond or post at all, people don't seem to think you exist. I think a certain amount of presence can help a forum from going completely nutters!

Hopefully I have expressed my thoughts well enough.

If a new supermod were to be added, I would suggest kate because of her location on the globe (why do we have 3 super mods within driving distance of each other?) and the fact that I know she's a good moderator. I've seen her have very few problems with other mods, so I don't think toe stepping will be a problem.

When totse was running UBB and acidmelt and I were admins, we thought a long time about adding a third admin (after suzie left). Frankly, we couldn't decide on a single person. Out of all of the moderators we couldn't decide on a single person between the two of us. We finally decided that maybe it wasn't a good idea to add someone just because we could but rather we should wait until it was absolutely necessary to do so.

I still don't think it's entirely necessary, but a lot of other people seem to think it is. I haven't ever seen acidmelt post here, so maybe he won't contest my vote for kate.

I agree with Zok. I don't have any problems with Kate as a mod, but I still can't get over jack's rationale for starting this thread. If another supermod is needed(which I don't think is the case because both Zok and MLOR are very active, and Jeff seems to be around a lot recently), and Kate is chosen on merit, then I'd have no issue with it. I think the problem was suggesting she should become a supermod simply because she has a vagina. It would be a Pirate Hippe situation all over again, except on a bigger scale IMO.

I don't think people would have a problem with Mr. Happy, but I just don't think an additional SuperMod is needed.

Especially now that registration closed for a while. zok is back from vacation and MLoR is around. I just don't think that totse requires extra administration and moderation. The problem forums already have international coverage through moderation.

I'll use the example of Printed Matter when lokil was inactive. It had no moderator, but that didn't matter because there was only a spam thread once a month or so. People made the odd thread suggesting that I be made a moderator there, but I told them that it wasn't needed. Moderation is a service, if the service isn't needed then it's just a status thing. Who needs extra status?

Not sure why you felt my comment was aimed at you, it wasn't. Unless I've missed a reply then as far as I was aware you hadn't said 'yay' or 'nay' so far.

But as you asked, I hereby formally nominate kAtE.

I believe she has the experience necessary to mod any forum, even those where she has no real knowledge.

Could she do it without stepping on the toes of the mods?...now that's a toughie. She's a bit of a Uber Fem-Nazi and sometimes her hormones run away with her. However I think she'd probably remember that her peers chose her and that they can also 'unchoose' (is that a word in English?) her.

She isn't a member of the OH-'mafia'( j/k guys I love you all).
And not being american she tends to be around when america is a bed.

I feel an antipodean female as a supermod would certainly be in accord with the changing demographic of &t (At least as far as I can see).

And most all....

If she gets the job on the back of my recommendation then I can morally blackmail her into sending me t3h n3kkiD pIX!! So pleeease Root make an sad sick ol'perv happy.

(and YES that was a joke, people).

It has always been my understanding that mods were choosen because of their goods posts and because they were knowledgable in their forums, I would like to think that the same applies to Super-Mods.

I don't think its a question of technical knowledge of a forums subject. Supermods only tend to 'mod' on a forum when there's a need.

Take Zok for example,

Zok has always made a point of NOT modding on forums not his own. He only deletes/edits/closes when there is a serious situation. Infact the only time i can recall him 'modding' on my forums is when things like kiddy porn was posted and he wanted it down asap and not wait for the forum mods to come along.

Does he have my indepth knowledge and personal experience of disgusting and sick perversions? I doubt it. Is he capable of modding S&A? Of course he bloody well is.

Same will apply to any super-mod.

Since jack brought up the "OH-mafia", I think I should be considered. I think North East Ohio is hugely under represented among the supermods. I think Akronites and Clevelanders are scared of posting out of fear that Zok and his central Ohio cronies would come down on them hard. I think me being a supermod would make my fellow NE Ohioans more comfortable with posting. Central Ohio has had the power long enough. Time to distribute it!

No, no, no. First we do different parts of Ohio, then we do different states, then we do different timezones, then we do different genders/age groups/personality types/etc... until everyone on totse is a supermod. It's only fair that way.

SuperMod from another timezone of the more beautiful persuasion?

wires.

She has technical computer knowledge.

Lives in the UK.

She is around quite a bit and is familiar with almost all of the various forums on totse.

She has experience as an admin, currently and in the past, in large subject-based forums.

She enjoys totse for entertainment, information, and communication.

There are no grudges against her and she hasn't had problems with the userbase of totse.

I don't think that a SuperMod is needed, but I think that she would be an effective one if people see a need.

Ya think? If she has ovaries and openly admits it then 'Wintermute Syndrome' (ie whiny american teenage boys feeling emasculated by a WOMAN being in charge of THEIR totse)will kick in.

While everything you say about her is true, she hasn't been a mod here very long, has she? (correct me on that if I'm wrong). Experience on other boards is all well and good but totse is unique.

Also , and I mean no disrespect, she's still a bit of a non-entity. I know her from her posts on S&A but that's it really. Infact, to be honest, I was a little surprised you chose her to co-mod Headcases. Not saying your choice was in any way wrong, it just surprised me.

ALthough that said, she'd probably be easier to work with than kAtE....who has views.

There is a very distinctive personality to Princess, or Wintermute if you prefer. If you think that attitudes towards her are due completely to her being a woman, then I'm not sure you were paying attention.

The length of a person's tenure has little to do with qualification. I'm still quite a 'noob'; I've only been posting on totse for a couple years. Experience can travel, as I'm sure you're aware.

A person does not have to be a deeply-established poster to provide a quality service. wires is quite qualified to moderate a psychology forum and has contributed to it well.

A person doesn't need bias, or "views", to moderate. In fact, it helps if one avoids bias.

It is her philosophy towards moderation that I believe takes the cake on the matter. Posting as if you were a regular, unless moderation is needed. Some people always speak from a point of authority, whereas she conciously does not. I believe that this is one of the important factors in being a SuperMod.

I don't think that a SuperMod is needed, but I think that she would be an effective one if people see a need.

uhm you did suggest we might be *shudders *friends *shudders*.

I'm truly surprised anyone might think that she and i could be friends. No joking I'm really not a fan of hers and if I were her boyfriend she'd have landed in ER long time back. Which was one of the reasons I had no problem about suggesting her as a supermod. Anyone who has followed her and my debates over the years knows that while we are polite and amicable towards each other , we are poles apart on almost any issue one might care to name. Being female she does have every right to be wrong.

I try and base my suggestions for mods etc on my evaluation of the person and not whether or not they are one of my E-buddys. Certainly I could name 3 people who were modded or offered modships on my suggestion who either actively dislike me (lauren for example)or are at best 'neutral' towards me.

And i've said openly that I didn't want to see kAtE modded for S&A (and I stand by that). That may seem strange when as a super mod she would be able to mod S&A but its a different situation....go figure...never said I made sense.

Ouch, out of every post that has been hurtful in this thread (including most of eudas) that one had to hurt the most because I've NEVER backstabbed you in my life, sure we've had our disagreements but I remember you saying to me a little over a month ago that I should be a supermod - so really, what gives?

Just because I'm opinionated on certain issues doesn't mean that they get in the way of my modding. Maybe you should look at SG now and then - there are often tons of threads berating women, new zealanders, artists, etc etc - and do I close them out of spite? No.. I'm one of the most chilled out mods in there and the regulars are actually starting to notice that a lot more now.

I can't comment on wires, I mean I haven't had much to do with her - but she is a newer mod which is why I don't get why you're suggesting her? Sure she may be an admin on another site - any stop to ask me what I did before I found totse? Totse sure as hell aint my first forum guys lol.

There is no competition to it, in my mind. They are different people and in no competition.

I'm not saying one is better than another; I am saying that I think wires would be a good SuperMod, if one was needed. There is still nothing that makes me believe there is a need.

It would only be fair and proper since that appears to be the goal of this thread...

Cincinatti has chili on top of spaghetti.....

I suggest eating more garlic, to combat the obvious threat of vampires.

Euda I will just say AMEN to what you said earlier in this thread.

You finally put words to what I've been trying to figure out for MONTHS. You said MODERATING is a SERVICE not a 'status thing' or ANYTHING else.

Well I'm going to come out and say it, I think we have quite a FEW moderators who think it IS A status thing, and care very much about that aspect of moderating.

I was trying to say it in another thread but I couldn't quite put my finger on it, and plenty of people jumped on me and bitched about it. Very strange.

I also think with the whole 'female supermod' issue, that some of the MALE moderators on this forum, do things and make decisions as moderators specifically to be 'nice' or 'impress' or just to put themselves in a position to be more friendly with the female moderators in particular.

This is typical male behavior, and though I guess I can't blame you for doing it at a party or in a bar, I don't think its really an appropriate way to be moderating.
