| Politics: Left, Right, and Center National, state, regional, and local politics. Who's doing what to whom, and what you can do about it. How-to-get-action messages are encouraged. "How the government fucked up my life" stories are encouraged. Sharing new methods for cheating on taxes is encouraged. Sample "letters to congresscritters" are encouraged. Apathy and "I can't do anything" posts are discouraged. Left, right, centrist, or any other form of political-economic systems are all up for discussion. Be prepared to defend yourself, or at least have a good line of bullshit ready. Extensive quoting of economists and philosophers is frowned upon. We want to hear what YOU have to say, not what some constipated, impotent, dead guy dreamt up while suffering from the DT's over a hundred years ago thought. |

Re: multiculturalism
My problem with multiculturalism is that it tends to degrade into "this guy looks different from this guy, so clearly they're from different cultures!" As was said above, if you interact with me in a positive way, I don't care what color you are or what kind of food you eat.

They Are The First To Speak About Rights, Yet They Seek To Deny You Yours If You Disagree With Them. They Vociferate The Importance Of Free Speech, Yet Do Everything In Their Power To Stifle Yours. They Demonize The Very System Which Allows Them The Freedom To Criticize In The First Place, And They Are The Last People In Line When It Comes To Defending The One Country On Earth That Would Ever Tolerate Their Hypocrisy. Re: multiculturalism
The problem is that most of those cities to the east are very homogeneous. They don't have any reason to be 'multicultural' seeing how there is just one streamlined culture there. The same with Iceland. The point is, multiculturalism is inevitable within a heterogeneous society. I've never head of progressives pushing homogeneous societies to become more heterogeneous. Nobody is pushing for more outsiders into America or even Japan, it's just that if people from other cultures do come here, I'll accept it and not crush it. I'd expect the same if I go to live in Tokyo. I don't expect a church or mcdy's to be built in my neighborhood, since I'll probably be in a .001% minority, but if enough WASPs live there eventually, we might decide to build a church or a subway and no one will stop us, that is multiculturalism. State organized religion, banning certain forms of music and film, that is the opposite of multiculturalism and I'm sure no one wants that. I'm not advocating we blindly/dogmatically accept just any cultural values, we wouldn't accept child abuse or sacrifice obviously, but most other cultural values are harmless or positive.

All of which is irrelevant as I still do not see your point.
Mono-culturalism doesn't prevent cultural crassness.
Instead of a bowling alley next to the Taj Mahal they'll build a neon tandoori stand next to it instead.
Wow what an improvement....
What makes your point even more pointless is that most of those historic sites you mention wouldn't even exist if not for multi-culturalism.
Kyoto?
Ever notice traditional Japanese architecture is similar to Chinese? To say nothing of the writing, food, and religion
Xi'an?
Built on the eastern end of the famed silk road, a trade route between east and west that lasted millenia.
San Juan?
Do I really have to explain how a Spanish settlement in the Carribean is an example of multi-culturalism?
Jeddah?
The ethnically diverse gateway city to Mecca through which millions of Muslims from all over the world flow every year, which is coincidently built in a western architectural style. Nope nothing multi-cultural there.
Agra?
You mean the Taj Mahal?
How could anyone possibly consider a building built by Muslims in Hindu India, designed in a style of architecture that combines Persian, Turkish, Indian and Islamic styles an example of multi-culturalism?
Damn that multi-culturalism and it's deleterious affects on culture!

kyoto: kyoto makes a very poor example for multiculturalism. you'll find that despite adopting significant elements of chinese culture, that japan refined it into a distinct and unique form over hundreds of years, and until the postwar period japan was easily one of the most monocultural countries on the planet.
xi'an: again, the silk road has been out of play for a few years, you know what i mean? how much 'multiculturalism' has taken place there in say, the last 500 years? not very fucking much. it is a bastion of chinese culture. not persian, not roman, not a blend of the above. CHINESE. the world would lose a historical treasure if xi'an was turned into another multicultural shithole like all the rest. in a few hundred years people are going to look bakc on this era as incredibly short sighted. white guilt ruins the cultures of other cultures (and especially their own) far faster than colonialism ever did.
san juan: ever hear of dia de la raza? do you deny that there is such a thing as mexican culture? cuban culture? puerto rican culture? there is, and there has been a distinctive puerto rican culture for hundreds of years. that culture would be lost if the place started swarming with chinamen and new englanders, do you disagree? do you also disagree that it would in fact be a LOSS to diversity? mixing everybody up like a giant bowl of chili actually does very little to HELP multiculturalism on a global scale. youll see some 'benefits' in the short term in individual communities, but in the long run its homogenizing everybody and losing the diversity of cultures that you hypocrits hold so dear.
jeddah: is anything but a western architectural style. fuck, it has some of the most traditional arabian architecture that exists, right up there with aden, muscat, and sanaa. jeddah is a good example of a cultural icon thats not too late to save, but it will become just another 21st century 'diverse' craphole, and all the things that made jeddah jeddah will be gone, thanks to you and your ilk.
agra: are you saying that there was no such thing as mughal culture? just like san juan, it was a very distinct culture, and its remnants live on. colonialisms impact was a drop in the bucket compared to what the 21st century ideals of diversity and multiculturalism will do to the subcontinent culturally.
you may be thinking, if mestizo culture and mughal culture arose fro a synthesis of different cultures, youd be right. but they were one off conditions. today, the SAME shitty 'diverse' 'multicultural' future is being formed in paris, london, new york, los angeles, dubai, barcelona, etc. i suppose its great if you want a one world govt or some such distopian nightmare, but it is tremendously damaging to the vast array of existing cultures. in the end national/regional monoculturalism is a much greater treasure on a global scale. how typical for you types to destroy what you claim to love.

Do you know anything about the culture of Puerto Rico?
"Puerto Rican culture" is a complete mixture of the culture from native inhabitants of Puerto Rico (Tainos), Spanish Colonialists, and the African Slaves brought to Puerto Rico to mine copper and gold. Puerto Rico is already multicultural! It has become even more so since the U.S. acquisition of Puerto Rico.
If you're using Puerto Rico as if it were not already an example of multiculturalism, then you're completely fucking mistaken. It has been multicultural and multiracial for decades. If you want to preserve it, then you want to preserve a huge combination of cultures - African, European and Native.

You are missing the point. The point is not on what Puerto Rican culture is. The point the poster is trying to make is, I think, that if you put all the cultures alongside each other, eventually you will get a mixture, a completely new thing, while the original ones get altered to a point they are not reconizable anymore. In this sense, yes there is a loss of true diversity, which is the individual, distince cultures in the beginning.
Besides, there is no use in swearing. It only adds emphasis to a small amount ( to me, anyway), but it makes the poster sound like he is mad.

Re: multiculturalism
I know what his point is, I'm telling him it makes little sense to say that we should preserve certain cultures from multiculturalism (i.e. Puerto Rican culture) when in fact those cultures are the very product of multiculturalism! Puerto Rico is a multicultural society - it makes absolutely no sense to save it from the very thing that created it: other cultures.
They very act of saying it is worthy of preservation already shows that multiculturalism has done a good thing!
As for swearing, I see the use in it. You don't? Who gives a shit?

Just because Puerto Rican culture is a product of multi-culturalism and is worthy of preservation (though I doubt this was what he intended to say) it does not mean multi-culturalism itseslf is worthy of preserving. For example, a child is the product of rape. Just because the child itself is worthy of preserving it does not mean that rape itself is worthy of preserving.
As for your swearing. Perhaps you see a use in being vulgar? In that case, swear to your heart's content. I am not the one that ends up looking like an angry teenager because of it.
