| Network (in)Security Interesting hacks and cracks. Info on firewalls, TCP/IP, encryption, networks, and security. The ins and outs of the phone system, caller services, how things work, what's illegal and what's not, cellular phones, beepers, telephony legislation, the PUC, ISDN, taps, who's listening, and switches. Talking about phones, hacking systems, technical advice, and such is completely LEGAL in the United States -- it's covered by the First Amendment. What's illegal is conspiracy to commit a crime. So if you say something like "Meet me at 2am so we can crack a can" or "I changed my cell phone's number myself" you are criminally liable. Stating "You can crack a can by doing thus-and-so" or "If you wanted to change a cell phone's number, you could do it like so" is perfectly OK. Posting passwords, calling card numbers, or credit card numbers is forbidden on this network. Posting such info will get you booted off the net. |

Re: Unsecure Network
Sure. Just don't send any credit card info or important passwords over it.

Because anyone nearby with an 802.11 card (or anyone on the owner's network, for that matter) can listen in and log your info.

Not real likely, but possible.
You could always reduce the risk by only using encrypted/secure (sort-of) sites, ones that use HTTPS. Then they'd have to do a MITM attack or break the encryption (very unlikely to happen in both cases, unless you like accepting certificates that can't be verified...).

Re: Unsecure Network
Turn off file sharing too. You don't want them snooping around on your computer - although if they haven't secured their network chances are they aren't too great with computers.

Not necessarily. My wireless connection is unsecured, partly because I do some filesharing and an unsecured wireless is one defense against RIAA and MPAA lawsuits. (Prove it's me and not someone using my wireless, mofokers.)

Ah...very crafty. I like your way of thinking there.
